Liquigas' sprinter Daniel Oss wins in the pouring rain in Castelfranco after a
crash mars the finish
Liquigas' Daniel Oss led his Slovakian team mate, Peter Sagan to the finish to
raise his arms in victory in the pouring rain after a crash in the final at 700
meters marred the finish. Oss and Sagan managing to avoid the mayhem and claim
the victory in Castelfranco, Venice after 198 kilometers over 12 rolling
Italian's Colnago's Sacha Modolo followed at three seconds to claim third. Luca
Paolini (Acqua & Sapone) and Nicholas Schnyder (Price/Custom Bikes) filled out
the top 5 in that order.
The day was a fast one with Lampre/Farnese Vini and ISD/Neri setting the pace
and launching their riders into the breaks on on the opening 85 kilometer leg
and later on the challenging Montebelluna circuit. Lampre got Ponzi into the
first break, then Cunego in another one and finally Gavazzi in the main one,
with 13 athletes. But, the race came down to a mass sprint when the final escape
of 13 was brought back in the final 12 kilometers.
As the pack neared the finish in Castelfranco the sky opened raining hell on the
peloton making for a hectic finish. In the final kilometer with the sprint teams in full flight Francesco
Ginanni Francesco of Androni Giocattoli PVC crashed on the rain slicked streets
bringing down others with most of the peloton blocked from competing in the
final sprint with Oss and Sagan.
The main body of the peloton finished 23 seconds later.
Daniel Oss on his win
"I was in the right place at the right time, after the fall at 800 meters,
Sagan and I realized we were alone, I was encouraged and took the opportunity .
It 'a victory that I dedicate to all those fans who follow me. "
National team selector, Paolo Bettini was pleased with the performance of the
Italian National team, "Today's race was a test ahead of the Worlds in
Melbourne, the boys went well, they met, confronted, but above all they spoke
with their legs. The national team in their final race was was organized to
deliver Marco Marcato for the sprint; but unfortunately due to the fall in the
rain he only managed 7th place."
Bettini mentioned why he chose to bring the team to the Giro del Veneto in
preparation for the worlds... Franco wanted it and he told me it would be nice
to gather the team for you (Società Ciclisti Padovani). He went on to comment
how the parcours is similar to the Geelong test.
"The World Championship will climb more demanding hills than those of today, but
the race was very good though. The kids today have all ridden well; it was still
a good test ahead of the World. Because the worlds will be managed by teams like
today and like today, first 85 kilometers and then a circuit to be repeated 11
times to the finish."
The president of the Società Ciclisti Padovani, Davide Faggion, was enthusiastic
after the race, "Thanks to the FCI (Federazione Ciclistica Italiana) and Paolo
Bettini for bringing the national team to the national historic race like the
Giro del Veneto. Our invitation is obviously open for next year .. "
The race drew large crowds to Padua, with full house at the Old Market to
applaud in spite of the deluge in Giorgione Square, and the race expo, with more
than 70 accredited media and young companies of Padua and Treviso as a frame:
this was the '82 Giro del Veneto, not even the rain could stop. The club that
organizes the race, Società Ciclisti Padovani celebrates its Centenary this
Lampre-Farnese Vini tried to enliven Giro del Vento 2010, but it didn't achieve
the result that it would have liked and deserved for the will shown by
blue-fucsia athletes. The cyclists directed by Fabrizio Bontempi wanted to make
the race as tough as possible and so they led the bunch with ISD-Neri raising
the pace and joining the attacks that characterized the 12 laps on Montebelluna
When the pack was about to reach the finish in Castelfranco Veneto, when a
pouring rain started to fall on the riders, making the roads wet: that's why
Ginanni crashed at 700 mt to go, forcing the bunch to stop, while Oss and Sagan,
who were preceding Ginanni, raced towards the finish, with victory for Oss.
For Lampre-Farnese Vini, Cunego was the best at 19th, while Lorenzetto, the
main man for the sprint, crashes without consequences. Ulissi, racing in the
Italian National Team, obtained the 36th place.
"We tried to make the race tough, since we had riders in good form, such
Cunego and Gavazzi, but we didn't succeed in creating the necessary selection -
Fabrizio Bontempi, sport director by Lampre-Farnese
Vini, said - The team performed a good race, leading the bunch and
being present in the attacks. It's a pity that the rain influenced the last part
of the race and that Lorenzetto crashed in the last kilometre".
