the 2010 tour du limousin reckons to be one of the best editions as the stars are drawn to central France to prepare for the Vuelta a Espana and some personal glory

The 43rd edition of the Tour du Limousin 2010 promises to be an exciting one; with a demanding course tracing the roads of the Limousin and Cher, and an impressive list of competitors with all the  ingredients that could prove to make this edition one of the most epic in its 43 year history.

Frank Schleck (Saxo Bank), Luis Leon Sanchez (Caisse d'Epargne), Oscar Pereiro (Astana), Nicolas Roche and Christophe Riblon (AG2R La Mondiale), Sylvain Chavanel (Quick Step), Pierrick Fedrigo and Anthony Charteau (Bouygues Telecom Bbox ) or Sandy Casar (FDJ) are some of the favorites and stars who will help us forget the absence of Fabian Cancellara (who had to cancel for personal reasons) and Bradley Wiggins (who will appear at the Eneco Tour). A race more open than ever ... with a bonus, the last minute addition of the Belgian pro-continental Landbouwkrediet team.

The chances of a French victory
Sylvain Chavanel and Jerome Pineau, who left their mark on the 97th edition of the Tour de France last July, return again. Chavanel, a double stage winner and super aggressive, and Pineau, who wore the polka dot jersey  in le tour for 9 stages should delight the fans. 

But they are not alone: Anthony Charteau, best climber in the Tour de France 2010, Pierrick Fedrigo, stage winner in Pau in July and twice winner of the Tour du Limousin, and Nicolas Vogondy, French time trial champion should also be popular with the tifosi.

Winner of the 4th stage  last year at Tour of Limousin, Romain Feillu (Vacansoleil), and the winner a few days ago of the 4th stage of the Tour of Burgos, feels good to try his luck on Beaublanc Boulevard. Like Samuel Dumoulin (Cofidis) who will celebrate his birthday again on the race.

Christophe Moreau and Mathieu Perget have every incentive to stand out and win. For Moreau, will want to end his successful career with a victory, in what will be his last stage race. For Perget, he will try to defend his title of 2009, and repeat his performance before joining the ranks of AG2R La Mondiale next season.

Française des Jeux will be led by Sandy Casar. With him, Casar will have Arthur Vichot winner of the second stage of Paris-Corrèze last August 5 and Benoît Limoges Vaugrenard winner of the 4th leg of the Tour du Limousin in 2008, each will want to have their say at the finishes.

Team Sojasun-Saur, lines up with the tours youngest team (average age about 25 years). Among the riders chosen by Stephane Heulot, we have: Lawrence Mangel, Cedric Coutouly and the  the promising young talent Paul Poux , winner of the Grand Prix du Muguet on May 1.

The chances of a foreign victor
Saxo Bank's Frank Schleck, who raced his first comeback race today ( a crit in Luxembourg) returns to prepare for the Vuelta after breaking his collarbone in the third stage of the Tour.  Frank  will be hungry for a win to make up for what he might have done at the tour.

. Stuart O'Grady , former yellow jersey of the Tour de France will accompany the Luxembourg and Gustav Larsson, Sweden's champion against the clock.

Winner of the Clasica San Sebastian, a few days ago, Luis Leon Sanchez should be the leader of the team Caisse d'Epargne on the 43rd Tour of Limousin, A race that will allow him to shine, especially on the 45 kilometer stage 2 time trial in Saint Amand Montrond  during which he will wear his Spanish champions jersey.

For Vacansoleil, Matto Carrara,  winner of the Tour of Luxembourg 2010, should be at the start. Johnny Hoogerland  who is off a great performance in the Tour of Poland... the team will also have two talented sprinters with Romain Feillu.

Nicolas Roche (AG2R La Mondiale), who took one of his finest victories of his career in the Tour du Limousin 2008 may back off, especially on the first stage Limoges - Boussac. But Roche  can count on support from two experienced riders, Christophe Riblon and Sebastian Hinault to fight for the overall.

With Katusha, the Tour du Limousin will renew with the arrival of a team , managed by renowned Russian, and former Tour of Limousin, Andrei Tchmil . The team will be led by 2000 world champion Evgeni Petrov, Laszlo Bodrogi, Egor Silin and Marco Bandiera initially.

Astana first came in 2008, and returns to the land of the Limousin with Oscar Pereiro, Tour de France winner in 2006 and 2nd in the Tour du Limousin 2007 He will be accompanied by Bazayev Assan, Asian champion against the clock in 2004 and the champion of Kazakhstan Maxim Gurov.

A British accent might be heard from the final podium, as Team SKY brings Simon Gerrans who has won a stage at each of the Grand Tours and the Grand Prix Ouest-France in 2009; one of the outsiders, along wih Russell Downing, recent winner of the Tour of Wallonia.

Cervélo TestTeam's Theo Bos  continues to make progress from a world champion sprinter to a road field sprint taking his count to four victories this year at: Clasica Almeria, Murcia and two stages in the Tour of Castilla y Leon. Bos will be a man to watch when the stages end in a mass sprint... Third in the Limousin race last year Xavier Florencio is scheduled to ride but unlikely to show for the race due to his broken collar bone in the Polish tour after a crash. We will up date the start list before the race.

In Cofidis, we can count on the winner of the Tour de l'Ain in 2009, the Estonian Rein Taaramae. The winner of the Tour du Limousin 2006, Leonardo Duque who led for two stages last year will find a route favorable to his talents.

Un plateau exceptionnel !
L’édition du Tour du Limousin 2010 promet d’être un très grand millésime. Un parcours exigeant, tracé sur les routes du Limousin et du Cher, et un plateau de très belle facture : voici les ingrédients pour une course qui devrait être animée de bout en bout.

Fränk Schleck (Saxo Bank), Luis Leon Sanchez (Caisse d’Epargne), Oscar Pereiro (Astana), Nicolas Roche et Christophe Riblon (AG2R la Mondiale), Sylvain Chavanel (Quick Step), Pierrick Fédrigo et Anthony Charteau (Bbox Bouygues Telecom), ou encore Sandy Casar (FDJ) : voici autant de têtes d’affiche qui sauront faire oublier l’absence de Fabian Cancellara (pour raison personnelle) et Bradley Wiggins (Finalement engagé sur l’Eneco Tour). Une course plus ouverte que jamais… avec en prime une 18ème équipe invitée de dernière minute : Landbouwkrediet (Continentale Pro - Belgique)

Les chances de victoire côté français
Sylvain CHAVANEL et Jérôme PINEAU, qui ont marqué de leur empreinte la 97ème édition du Tour de France en juillet dernier, vont courir de nouveau ensemble à l’occasion du Tour du Limousin 2010. Chavanel, double vainqueur d’étape et super combatif, et Pineau, porteur du maillot blanc à pois rouge durant 9 étapes sur la « Grande Boucle », auront vraisemblablement les faveurs du public.

Mais ils ne seront pas les seuls : Anthony CHARTEAU, meilleur grimpeur du Tour de France 2010, Pierrick FEDRIGO, vainqueur d’étape à Pau en juillet et double vainqueur du Tour du Limousin, et Nicolas Vogondy, champion de France du contre-la-montre, devraient aussi bénéficier d’une bonne côte de popularité auprès des spectateurs.

Lauréat l’an passé de la 4e étape du Tour du Limousin, le « briviste » Romain FEILLU (Vacansoleil), vainqueur il y a quelques jours de la 4ème étape du Tour de Burgos, se sent bien de retenter sa chance Boulevard de Beaublanc. Tout comme Samuel DUMOULIN (Cofidis) qui fêtera une nouvelle fois son anniversaire sur la course.

Christophe MOREAU et Mathieu PERGET auront toutes les motivations pour sortir du lot et l’emporter. Pour MOREAU, il s’agira de clore sa carrière sur un succès, pour ce qui sera sa dernière course par étapes. Pour PERGET, il tentera de rééditer sa performance de l’an passé, avant de rejoindre les rangs d’AG2R La Mondiale la saison prochaine.
Quant à la formation FDJ, elle sera emmenée par Sandy CASAR. Avec lui, Arthur VICHOT vainqueur de la 2ème étape du Paris-Corrèze le 5 août dernier et Benoît VAUGRENARD vainqueur à Limoges de la 4ème étape du Tour du Limousin 2008, auront leur mot à dire.

La formation Saur-Sojasun, absente du dernier Tour de France, alignera quant à elle une équipe jeune (moyenne d’âge d’environ 25 ans). Parmi les coureurs alignés par Stéphane Heulot, on retrouve Laurent MANGEL, Cédric COUTOULY, ou encore le prometteur Paul POUX, vainqueur du Grand Prix du Muguet le 1er mai dernier.

Les chances de victoire côté étranger
Fränk SCHLECK, qui se marie le 21 août, pourrait décrocher la victoire finale en guise de cadeau pour sa future. Stuart O’GRADY, ancien maillot jaune du Tour de France, accompagnera le champion du Luxembourg, ainsi que Gustav LARSSON, champion de Suède du contre-la-montre.

Vainqueur de la Clasica San Sebastian, il y a quelques jours, Luis Leon SANCHEZ devrait être le leader de l'équipe Caisse d'Epargne sur ce 43ème Tour du Limousin, Une course qui doit lui permettre de briller, notamment sur le chrono de Saint Amand, au cours duquel il portera le maillot de champion d’Espagne de la discipline.
Du côté de l’équipe Vacansoleil, le vainqueur du Tour du Luxembourg 2010, Matteo CARRARA, devrait être au départ. Johnny HOOGERLAND sera également au rendez-vous pour faire parler sa pointe de vitesse lors des sprints, au côté de Romain FEILLU.

Nicolas ROCHE (AG2R La Mondiale), qui avait signé la plus belle victoire de sa carrière à Guéret sur le Tour du Limousin 2008, pourrait tirer son épingle du jeu, notamment sur la première étape Limoges - Boussac. Il pourra compter sur Christophe RIBLON et Sébastien HINAULT, 2 coureurs d’expérience, pour l’épauler.

Avec Katusha, le Tour du Limousin renouera avec la venue d’une équipe russe de renom, managée par un ancien vainqueur du Tour du Limousin : Andreï Tchmil. L’équipe sera emmenée par Evgeni PETROV champion du monde espoir en 2000. Laszlo BODROGI, Egor SILIN et Marco BANDIERA seront au départ.

Après une première venue en 2008, Astana revient en terre limousine. Oscar PEREIRO, vainqueur du Tour de France 2006 et 2ème du Tour du Limousin 2007, sera à la relance. Il sera accompagné par Assan BAZAYEV, champion d’Asie du contre-la-montre en 2004 et par le champion du Kazakhstan en titre, Maxim GOUROV.

L’équipe Sky, apportera un accent britannique à la course. Simon GERRANS vainqueur d’étape sur les 3 grands Tours et lauréat du Grand Prix de Plouay 2009, sera l’un des outsiders, tout comme Russel DOWNING, récent vainqueur du Tour de Wallonie et dont il faudra se méfier.

Theo BOS (Cervelo Test Team), bien que spécialiste de la piste, a déjà 4 victoires à son compteur sur route cette année (Clasica Almeria, Tour de Murcie et 2 étapes du Tour de Castille y Leon). Un homme à surveiller de près, ainsi que Xavier FLORENCIO CABRE, 3ème du dernier Tour du Limousin 2009.

Chez les Cofidis, on pourra compter sur le vainqueur du Tour de l’Ain 2009, l’Estonien Rein TAARAMAE. Le vainqueur du Tour du Limousin 2006, Leonardo DUQUE, retrouvera des routes qu’il apprécie.
