Teams Announced for Coming "Replacement"Races
Johan Bruyneel on non-invite to Vuelta a Espana...
“All of these one-day races are part of the replacement program we had to put in
place after we were told we’re not welcome in this year’s Tour of Spain,”
continued Bruyneel. “I hope that our victory in the Teams Classification in the
Tour de France may be an answer to the organizers of the Vuelta. It feels
bitter: the best Team in the World’s hardest race not being invited to
participate at the Vuelta. ‘Other teams offered us better options on a sporting
level,’ they said to us. We disagree.”

Cervélo TestTeam
Xavier Florencio Returns for San Sebastian
When Xavier Florencio (ESP) was withdrawn from the 2010 Tour de France line-up,
we indicated a full review of the situation. These are the outcomes:
1. The rider did indeed have the ailments as stated. The product he used to
self-medicate is the most commonly sold over-the-counter medication to treat
this ailment in Spain.
2. The rider understands and accepts the steps taken by team management to
protect him and the team. In fact, this case has demonstrated why a policy to
clear any medication in advance with the medical staff is so important – regular
doctors and pharmacists are often not aware of the limitations placed by WADA on
professional athletes.
3. The team’s medical staff has changed the medication to conform with
Cervélo TestTeam policy. As such, the rider will be allowed to return to racing
as soon as he is declared fit by the Chief Medical Officer of the Cervélo
TestTeam. We expect this to be on July 31, at the traditional Spanish race
Clásica Ciclista de San Sebastián.
Skil/Shimano
Steve Houanard Extends Contract
The 24-year-old from Chambéry is currently in his second season at Skil-Shimano.
The new deal runs until the end of 2012.
Steve Houanard has made excellent progress over the past 18 months, with
especially good performances in the Flemish spring classics and undulating stage
races. His speedy finish has also played its part in securing the Frenchman four
top-ten classifications in this season’s Bayern Rundfahrt and Tour de Luxembourg
Vacansoleil Pro Cycling Team
Mitchell Docker and Koen de Kort extend their contracts
The management of the Skil-Shimano professional cycling team has added twelve
months to the contracts of both Mitchell Docker and Koen de Kort.
23-year-old Australian Mitchell Docker is
currently in his second season at Skil-Shimano, after excelling frequently in
international U23 races. He confirmed his considerable talent in the Delta Tour
and the Route du Sud, among others, by winning a stage in each. Docker has made
good progress in this year’s classics and is well suited to stage races over
undulating terrain. His speedy end sprint means he also has a chance of winning
races.
Koen de Kort (27) has continued to mature
as a rider this season. This year’s standout performances include such highly
respected Flemish classics as Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Dwars door Vlaanderen and
Ghent-Wevelgem. The Dutchman is an all-rounder who can handle many different
types of terrain, and is accordingly an important rider for Skil-Shimano.

Footon -
Servetto - Fuji
San Sebastian & Memorial Ricardo Otxoa
In the aftermath of a Tour de France quite successful for all the team, riders
from FOOTON-SERVETTO-FUJI are not stopping as the calendar takes on this weekend
with two differentiated blocks. A first unit commanded by Joxean Fernández
Matxin will be heading into Euskadi to take part in the two one-day races making
the second 'Big Week' in Basque cycling, with a hillier 30th Clásica San
Sebastián (UCI ProTour, Saturday 31st) and a softer, more traditional 65th
Circuito de Getxo - Memorial Ricardo Otxoa (UCI 1.1, Sunday Aug 1st).
Most from the strongest riders into the Gold Generation's Grande Boucle
roster will be making their next outing on Guipuzcoan soil, as Alberto Benítez,
Eros Capecchi, Arkaitz Durán, Aitor Pérez Arrieta and Fabio Felline join fresher
Pedro Merino, David Gutiérrez Gutiérrez and Johnnie Walker. On the other hand,
the squad at Getxo, a race more suited for sprinters, will give a break for
Benítez and Capecchi in favour of two top sprinters -Vidal Celis and Enrique
Mata-, replacers alongside David Gutiérrez Palacios and Argentinean Daniel Díaz,
opening here his trainee stage in Gold suit.
Menzies and UnitedHealthcare Presented by Maxxis
Return to Elk Grove to defend 2009 title.
Oakland, CA – The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis rolls
into Elk Grove, IL with a formidable lineup, led by last year’s Tour of Elk
Grove overall winner Karl Menzies, as well as sprinters Hilton Clarke and Jake
Keough.
Joining them will be recent Cascade Classic overall winner Rory Sutherland. With
the three-day race opening with a 7.2 km time trial, Sutherland will be one of
the favorites to take the race lead on day one.
But the 155 km road race on Saturday and Sunday’s 110 km criterium are known as
sprinter’s courses. And UnitedHealthcare Presented by Maxxis sprinters have been
nearly unstoppable when the full squad is together since Clarke joined the Team
for the Air Force Cycling Classic in June.
“We’ve been able to watch the progression of our sprinting crew since the
spring,” said Team Director Mike Tamayo. “With every race, Karl, Jake and Andrew
(Pinfold) were coming together as a unit. And after battling Hilton for several
months, when we added him to the mix he fit in perfectly and the guys just kept
winning.”
Hilton Clarke and Karl Menzies Those wins included a sweep at the Air Force
Classic, and victories in both criteriums of the Nature Valley Grand Prix.
“Now we come to Elk Grove with those four guys going well, plus Rory coming off
Cascade, and three huge diesels in Brad White, Jonny Clarke and Adrian Hegyvary,
so we feel pretty good about this weekend’s races,” Tamayo said.
But UnitedHealthcare Presented by Maxxis will face some stiff competition as
well, renewing the Team’s battle with V Australia, whose Ben Day was a close 2nd
to Sutherland at Cascade. Jamis-Sutter Home brings a sprint-heavy squad led by
Ivan Dominguez and the Borrajo brothers. Plus Bissell and Mountain Khakis are
both fielding full squads for Elk Grove.
“We know everyone’s going to show up ready to race their bikes this weekend,”
Tamayo said. “It’s going to be some good, hard racing, and it should be really
exciting for all the fans who come out to watch.”

Team Type 1
Hanson Second On Rio Stage 2
Três Rios, Brazil – Ken Hanson delivered Team Type 1 its second straight
runner-up finish Thursday at the Tour do Rio in Brazil. Hanson finished
second to race leader Tomas Alberio (Trevigiani Dynamon Bottoli), who won his
second consecutive stage. Hanson is fifth overall, while Team Type 1 teammate
Chris Jones – who was second on Wednesday's opening stage – remains 14 seconds
off the overall lead with three stages to go.
"We are a little short-staffed with only five riders here against many
eight-man teams," Jones said. "But the guys are doing a solid job so far."
Hanson, winner of three criteriums this year, said he might have earned his
first victory in a road race had the course markings been more accurate. "The
200 meters-to-go sign was actually at 75 meters," Hanson said. "So I didn't even
get to open up my sprint. It was a bit confusing and frustrating."
The 100-mile (161 km) race was expected to shake up the overall standings.
But Hanson said the climbs were not as daunting as the race bible professed,
leading to a field sprint. He lies fifth overall, 1:10 off the lead, and will
wear the green points jersey Friday.
"I feel good and I'm climbing pretty well," he said. "Chris is riding really
well. He was impressive at the Cascade Cycling Classic last week. So if I have
good legs, I'll help him as much as I can."
Friday's third stage is a 94-mile (152 km) race that goes uphill almost
immediately, snaking its way from Três Rios to Nova Friburgo. "It's going to be
really, really tough," Hanson said.

Fritzinger Starts as NICA Executive Director
Schools cycling program draws solid industry support
Matt Fritzinger, the founder of the Northern California High School Cycling
League, commences his new position as executive director of the National
Interscholastic Cycling Association, August 1.
The NorCal League has been used as the model for other high school cycling
leagues in the USA, and Fritzinger’s transition from NorCal to National ensures
a continuation of the same principles that he and members of the NorCal board of
directors created and implemented over a10-year span.
Matt Fritzinger commented, "I feel a lot
of personal satisfaction looking back at what we created at the NorCal League,
and I stress ‘we’. The caliber of people on the NorCal board and in the
organization has been outstanding from the outset, and it’s been a privilege to
work with every one of them. Their wide range of progressive thinking and solid
experience has driven all of this. The NorCal model has proven to be replicable,
and now I’m dedicated to doing that across the USA."
The main features of the NorCal League, some of which distinguish it from
traditional high school sports, include:
* Camaraderie and friendship: there is a lot of inter-team
socializing, including the sharing of training tips. Training sessions are
co-ed. Parents and coaches often cheer for riders on other high school teams.
There’s a feeling of all being in this together.
* It’s about racing and about having fun: national team
aspirants can find the necessary competition and coaching quality within the
league. But those who just want to ride bikes with their pals are welcome too.
* Parents ride too, and play other roles, but they can be
on-bike course monitors: A big part of the NorCal League’s success is the degree
to which parents are part of and enjoy attending and volunteering at the events.
* The sport takes students into the natural environment: they
develop an appreciation of nature and responsible land use practices.
* Adaptation: at each stage of its growth, the League has
adapted and evolved. Controls for rider safety, a coaching development and
training program, professional race venue setup, thorough rules, growing
logistical support both within and for teams. These are all areas in which the
NorCal League has made considerable developmental steps.
Austin McInerny, president of the NorCal
League, who has been with the League since 2002, acknowledges Fritzinger’s role:
"I have been honored to work closely with Matt for the past eight years. From
the first season, he has remained true to the League’s mission and has worked
tirelessly to develop opportunities to expand high school mountain biking while
always balancing increased competition with equally important social aspects and
providing opportunities for volunteer involvement. While the NorCal League will
miss Matt’s leadership, we are thrilled to see him take charge of the National
Interscholastic Cycling Association. We all owe Matt a very sincere ‘thank you,’
because without his vision and extremely hard work, I seriously doubt we would
be seeing the current resurgence in mountain biking that is making its way
across the country."

series of charity bike rides taking place throughout Breast Cancer Awareness
Month, benefitting Young Survival Coalition (YSC).
The 2010 rides will include a four-day, 220-mile bike ride from Hershey, Pa.,
to New York City from October 1 – 4, 2010.
This year, an additional three-day, 200-mile bike ride has been added that will

"We are extremely excited to have Mari and Kim riding with us again this year
at the YSC Tour de Pink presented by Hershey’s Bliss,” said Lisa J. Frank,
Co-Founder of Tour de Pink and Board Member of Young Survival Coalition. “With
funds raised through participation in the YSC Tour de Pink presented by
Hershey’s Bliss bike rides, we’re able to offer outreach programs that bring
awareness about YSC to many communities. The Hershey Company’s support of Young
Survival Coalition helps provide funds for the critical programs and services we
offer to young women battling breast cancer and their families.”
The Tour de Pink began in 2004 to raise funds and awareness for YSC, the
premier global organization dedicated to the critical issues unique to young
women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. Growing from six riders in 2004, YSC
anticipates 300 cyclists will participate in this year’s Tour de Pink rides. YSC
works with survivors, caregivers and the medical, research, advocacy and
legislative communities to provide resources, support and education to women
diagnosed with breast cancer under the age of 40. The Hershey Company has
donated nearly $1.75 million to the YSC over the past six years to help the
organization in its efforts to change the face of breast cancer by advocating
for more research on young women and breast cancer.
“Hershey’s Bliss Chocolate is proud to continue The Hershey Company’s support
of Young Survival Coalition as a presenting sponsor of this year’s charity bike
ride and by donating $300,000 to the organization,” said Michele Buck, Senior
Vice President, Global Chief Marketing Officer, The Hershey Company. “Breast
cancer is a disease that touches the lives of many Americans. We invite everyone
to join us in supporting the cause through participation in the YSC Tour de Pink
presented by Hershey’s Bliss.”
