The Giro d'Italia has a number of competitions that reward aggressiveness in
hopes of making each of the stages more exciting. and entertain the tifosi who
wait on road to view the race. They also reward riders with recognition (and
some cash) who would often be overlooked in spite of putting in a large effort
animating the race.
The Traguardo Volante, or literally "hot sprints" replaced the Intergiro mid
race sprints and purple maglia Ciclamino of years past; to score points a rider
has to, in most cases be in an escape. Tom Stamsnijder (Rabobank) and Jerome
Pineau (Quick Step were the most active in the breaks with the Rabo rider taking
the Volante prize while Pineau was rewarded with a stage win and the Trofeo Fuga
for most time in breaks.
It should be noted here that 25 year old Stamsnijder also placed 5th in the
Fuga and Combativity trophy classifications showing his devotion to the open
road, love of the wind in his face and unfailing optimism in shooting for a
win... With credentials like these the tall rider from Wierden, Netherlands and
son of Hennie Stamsnijder (the first Dutch rider to win the World Cyclocross
championships) we can expect to see young Tom on the top step of the podium some
day soon
Omega Pharma/Lotto Olivier Kaisen also bears mention coming in third in all
three "animators" trophies. The 6 foot 5 inch tall rider from Belgium like
Stamsnijder and Pineau was an almost constant presence in the breaks.
Matt Lloyd, on the hunt for the climbers jersey was active in the breaks to
open his early lead on points, his efforts in the breaks and attacks for the
summit crossings paid off, not only with the maglia verde, but another trip to
the podium to pick p the Combativity trophy by the finish in Verona.
