93rd Giro d'Italia - Points Jersey & Azzurri d'Italia Competition
The race for the Maglia Rossa points jersey of the 2010 tour of Italy  - Cadel Evans impresses in a consistent show taking the Maglia Rossa jersey and Azzurri d'Italia trophy

2010 Giro d'Italia -
Jersey Winners

Maglia Rosa Ivan Basso Liquigas/Doimo
Maglia Rossa Points: Cadel Evans BMC Racing Racing
KOM Maglia Verde:  Matthew Lloyd Omega Pharma/Lotto
U26 Maglia Bianca:  Richie Porte Saxo Bank
Team:  Liquigas/Doimo

The Giro jersey's aside from the pink of the leaders jersey were this year all cast from the white, green and red of the Italian tricolore flag; green for the King of the mountains, the white - best young rider and the red the points jersey.

The winner of the points jersey this year was Cadel Evans. Although it may not have been the jersey Cadel preferred to finish the race in, it is nonetheless an impressive win for the World Road Champion who led Australians to possession of three of the top jersey competitions in the 2010 Giro in Verona.

Combined with his own personal best performance in the Giro in 5th place. Evans could stand proud on the podium to accept the red jersey. In a race dominated by Ivan Basso and his green & blue clad teammates, Evans fought well on a clearly weaker team to take a stage win, the red jersey and the Azzuri d'Italia competition.

The race for the Giro's point jersey as it turned out wasn't one just for the sprinters; but more a gauge of overall consistency of stage wins and top 15 places over the 21 stages with points given to the top 15 riders of each stage. (25 - 1 point).

And if points could be given, the race judges could take points away, which they did when the 40 riders finished over the time limit and were allowed to continue the next day after a penalty of 25 points. Afte that stage, Tyler Farrar barely held on to the red jersey; but in the end the jersey would only go to a finisher and by Verona few sprinters were either in contention and the few who were left abandoned on stage 20 over the snow covered slopes of the Gavia.

The Azzurri d'Italia Trophy - Podiums
Cadel also took the Azzuri d'Italia competition for appearances on podiums during the tour. Points were awarded for being  on the podium, 4, 2 & 1 for each step.

Evans led Ivan Basso by two points and Michele Scarponi by 5 in the final accounting. with Filippo Pozzato and Vincenzo Nibali filling out the top five riders. Once again the competition points out the consistent performance of the world champion throughout the tour.

Statistically the sprinters are all but missing from 31 riders listed on the final results for the trophy as most abandoned by the arrival in Verona for the time trial. Kiwi Greg Henderson leads the ranks of the sprinters who managed to make the complete trek from Amsterdam.
