both team classifications...
2010 Giro top team: Liquigas Doimo is honored on the podium
Team Liquigas began to show their strength on the stage 4 team time trial in
winning by 31 seconds over Teams SKY and HTC and putting three of their riders
on the top of the general classification: Vincenzo Nibali, Ivan Basso and
Valeriro Agnoli..
But when it came to the final week in the mountains is where the team proved
to be remarkably strong with Sylvester Szmyd and Valerio Agnoli buffering
Nibali, Basso in their final dismissal of their rivals.
Liquigas flies through the rain soaked team time trial to win the stage.
By the end of the race Stefano Zanatta's team led in both team competitions
measured by time and accumulated points. It wasn't by luck or circumstance; but
a team united behind a strong and capable leader working seamlessly in pursuit
of the teams goals to put Ivan Basso on the final podium. Basso extended the
same to his team pacing to Nibali on the final climb on stage 20 so he
could secure his podium position. In the end it is a demonstration of how much
cycling is a team sport.
Rabobank with a young squad did remarkably well finishing second on time, and
third on the points classification; while David Arroyo's Caisse d'Epargne outfit
was the final team to reach the podium for time.
Marco Pinotti's HTC/Columbia wrecking crew and stage hunters, the
winningest team in the past 2 years led in the points competition for most of
the race but in the final 4 stages, were soundly trounced by the Liqui-guys by
131 points.
