The race of the Young Guns in the Grand Tours are races inside the greater
race with their own general classification. However it is rare that a young
rider gets the support of his team for an assault on the jersey as he is often
one of the domestiques for the team leader. The competition gives us a
rare look at the riders of the future with a who's who of cycling often first
coming into view when they win the white jersey at one of the grand tours.

Richie Porte won the Maglia Bianca this year, his first season as a pro rider
signing late in 2009 with Bjarne Riis' crew Saxo Bank. He soon distinguished
himself with a time trial win in the tour of Romandie (his first pro win) and
followed up in the Giro wearing the leaders jersey for 3 days. He settled in on
the G.C. on stage 14 in third place in the white jersey and wore it to the
finish today in Verona finishing 11th in the time trial and 7th on the overall
ranks. Quite an impressive show for a neo-pro in his first Grand Tour.
Andy Schleck's was no less so a few years ago, and look and one only has to
look at Andy's progress to see what we might expect from Richie in the future.
With that said, the Best Young Rider G.C. is loaded with talent to watch in
the future with Croation Rober Kiserlovski in second putting in some hard
work for Ivan Basso to win the overall and be apart of the top team in this
years race.
Bauke Mollema of Rabobank acquitted himself well in his comeback ride after a
year battling illness in 2009. His Rabo teammate Steve Kruijswijk also rode well
and was active in breaks. Omega Pharma's Frncis De Gref filled out the top 5 in
the classification.
But, one might look over the names of the 37 riders in the classification and
see how many sound familiar from their action in the breaks or active supporting
their race leader during this Giro... you can be sure you'll be hearing those
names again in the future.

Porte also spent a few days in the maglia rosa of race leader.
