2010 Tempo Team Ronde van Belgie - Stage 3
Saur-Sojasun's big day in Belgium. Jimmy
Casper takes the sprint and gives himself a nice birthday present. Phillipe
Gilbert stays in overall lead. Massive crash in final three kilometers shook
up the race.
Saur-Sojasun's Jimmy Casper has won the third stage in the Ronde van Belgie
from Knokke-Heist to Mechelen over 192,2 km. In the sprint Casper was the fastest
over Danilo Napolitano and Gert Steegmans. Phillipe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto)
retains the overall lead with Martias and Vaitkus still second and third.
Just a few kilometers into the stage Sven Renders (Verandas Willems), Pieter
Vanspeybroeck (Topsport Vlaanderen), Jan Kuyckx (Qin Cycling Team) and Stijn
Vandenbergh (Katusha) broke clear from the bunch. The maximum gap of the four
was five minutes.
From that moment Omega Pharma-Lotto and An Post-Sean Kelly started the chase
in the bunch and with 50 km to go the break was chased down. From that moment
lots of riders attacked including Sven Nys, Matt Brammeier and even race leader
Phillipe Gilbert attacked with Rabobank rider Joost Posthuma. But they all had
no luck. The next attack from Frederic Amorison (Landbouwkrediet), Anthony Delaplace
(Saur-Sojasun), Christophe Premont (Lotto-Bodysol) and Matt Brammeier (An Post)
had more luck but also there luck was over 10 kilometers ahead.
In the remaining of the stage the bunch had control over the race and another
bunchsprint was unavoidable. Gert Steegmans started the sprint too early but
couldn't maintain his effort. Jimmy Casper was the fastest and gave himself
a nice present on his birthday. With 3 km to go there was a massive crash in
the bunch with Wilfried Cretskens and Bert DeWaele as most important victims.
Cretskens broke his collarbone while DeWaele broke his left knee.
