ITALY - Tour of Tuscany (U23-Elite Riders) Stage 1: Another victory for a Mapei-related squad in the Italian U23 scene. Ivan Fanelli of the Grassi-Mapei team took the first stage of the 12th "Giro della Toscana" (Tour of Tuscany), disputed over 153 kms. between Florence and Seano (province of Prato), also featured by a 5-lap final circuit around Seano.

Fanelli won a 18-man sprint from fellow Italians Angelo Ciccone and Mario Russo to take both the stage win and overall leadership. The decisive b. reak formed in the early part of the stage, and gained up to a maximum of 3' on the main peloton. Thanks to the perfect collaboration among the escapees, the chasing group's efforts proved useless, as they could only half the gap, as the main bunch got to the finishing line 1'30" behind the leading pack.

170 riders belonging to 9 different countries took the start in Florence's Michelangelo Square, with Tuscany's regional President as unusual starter.

Stage 1 Results (TOP 5 Places):

ITALY - Tour of Tuscany (U23-Elite 2 riders) Stage 2: Vellutex takes it all !!!A great day for the Vellutex Palazzago team, and one of his main stars: Ruslan Gryschenko. The Ukrainian, bronze medallist at the World Road Championships (behind Popovych and Caruso, then teammates of his, now pro riders) in Portugal last year, won stage 2 of "Giro della Toscana", a 147-km-long ride from Ponte Spada to Casenuove in the Florence area. A favorite for the final win, Gryschenko outsprinted the Promociclo duo made up of Di Monaco and Candela. The trio got clear with some10 km. to go, on the Gambassi ascent, and managed to keep a few seconds on the chasers. Mirco Lorenzetto won the main peloton's sprint ahead of Daniele Pietropolli.

Gryschenko's teamate at Vellutex, Giairo Ermeti, captured the Overall Leader's Fucsia Jersey, with the same time as 7 more riders, but better placings. Friday's third leg moves to Michele Bartoli's area, with a 156-km. ride both starting and finishing in San Romano (near Pisa), and encompassing some 2nd Category ascents at Peccioli (km 25), Castagno (km 57) and Marti (km 117). SPAIN - 1st Volta a Galicia (U23-Elite 2 riders) - Stage 1: Madrid's Elite-2 rider Carlos Castaño captured the opening leg of the Tour ("Volta" in Galician Language, so similar to Portuguese) of Galicia, disputed over 132 kilometres from A Coruña to Santa Uxía de Riveira. The rider of Galicia-based "GD Supermercados Froiz" soloed to victory with a 17" margin over a 5-strong chasing group, led home by his teammate Juan Marzoa.

136 riders (many of which belonging to teams from outside Galicia) took the start of the opening leg, whose decisive moment came on the Cat. 3 Alto de Moldes climb, in the very final part of the stage, when mr. Castaño managed to break away from a leading group of 27 and started a successful solo escape, that took him all the way to the (nearby) finishing line.

The Supermercados Froiz rider took both the stage win and the Overall Lead of course, while Aitor Pérez (Caja Rural de Navarra) is the KOM leader after climbing Alto de Salgueiras and Alto de Moldes. Víctor Gómez (CC Ciudad de Oviedo), is the first Intermediate Sprints leader. The Pontevedra-based Grupo Deportivo Supermercados Froiz is the Teams Ranking's leader.
