25th Vuelta a Castilla y León - Stage 3

Friday's third and queen stage of the Tour of Castille and Leon went from León town to the summit of the first category alto de Morredero (inside the Ponferrada city limits) over 158.8 kilometers, with another equally tough ascent, the mighty Alto de Foncebadón, coming straight after the halfway point.

The action got underway a little later than scheduled, with 107 riders in attendance. Vitor Rodrigues of Caja Rural and Delio Fernández of Xacobeo Galicia were the only non-starters today. It took some fifty kilometers and many failed attempts from lesser teams such as Caja Rural, Burgos 2016 and Orbea for the first breakaway group to come into being.

Its "ingredients" were Steven Kruijswijk (Hol - Rabobank) and José Vicente Toribio (Spa - Andalucía-CajaSur), on the move in earlier stages too, as well as Javier Aramendia (Spa - Euskaltel-Euskadi), Serafín Martínez (Spa - Xacobeo Galicia), Rubén Reig (Spa - Caja Rural) and Ricardo García (Spa - Orbea). But with Contador well-determined to show who's the boss today, and the rain not helping the brave, their efforts predictably proved to be useless: the boys weren't allowed to gain more than a minute or so, and got reeled in by the Astana-driven bunch by km. 71.

Another man already in the limelight in this race, Ukraine's Oleg Chuzdha (Caja Rural), gave it a shot later, with Cesar Fonte (Por - Barbot-Siper) and Manuel Antón (Spa - Burgos 2016) as fellow attackers. They enjoyed some time on the front and some media exposure, but once more Astana made their intentions clear, and with Footon also joining the chase, there was no way for the escapees to hold off their pursuers on the Foncebadón steeps.

Angel Vicioso (Spa - Andalucía-CajaSur) did crest the climb in first place ahead of KOM leader Iban Mayoz and Stefan Denifl (Aut - Cervélo TestTeam), then Jorge Azanza (Spa - Euskaltel-Euskadi) attacked in the descent that followed. The orange warrior took a minute out of field and won the third category KOM Prime at Onamio (Mayoz claimed second place and the relative points, and increased his advantage in the Mountains classification) but Azanza was later forced to abide by the "Astana rules".

After his move was nullified ... another one came, started by Andoni Blázquez (Orbea), with Poland's Michael Kwiatkowski (Caja Rural) joining the Spaniard in a two-man front group. Their advantage quickly reached two minutes, but the Astana's "seven wonders" driving the peloton charge had everything under control. Blázquez and Kwiatkowski were still in the lead as they hit the final ascent but their hopes evaporated as the going got hillier. The Spaniard gave up first, and his colleague from abroad was chased down later (but he was too ...).

The Orbea attacking machines kept stealing the show anyway, courtesy of their young prospect Mikel Landa: the very young gun (turned 20 the past December) sped off on his own as the hill became a little "gentler", but his time in the sun ran out in about ten minutes. Still, his brave move was laudable.

The fast pace set by Daniel Navarro and AC's other lieutenants, combined with the Alto de Morredero toughness, thinned the peloton down, before Stefan Denifl (first) and Ezequiel Mosquera (later) tried to make the gap. In vain, in the Austrian's case. With much more success in the Galician's case. Then, finally, Alberto Contador came into action: the dual Tour de France winner, plus Igor Antón and Tiago Machado, set off in pursuit of the Xacobeo rider. The Spaniards succeeded while the RadioShack talent just couldn't hold the pace, so that we got an all-Spanish trio on the front with a few kilometers remaining.

Colombian mountain goat Juan Mauricio Soler (Caisse d'Epargne) tried hard to catch them, with a small group of seven featuring, among others, Machado and teammates Janez Brajkovic plus Denis Menchov (Rus - Rabobank) and David Bernabeu (Spa - Barbot-Siper), further back. Efforts from the South-American were rewarded as he joined the lead group about 4 km. from the finish, and immediately picked up the pace again. Skirmishes in the front quartet followed, with basically everyone but AC trying to break away solo; the Astanaman was in fact keeping himself busy in the process of countering all alternate moves from his fellow frontrunners.

Until a last mile attempt from Euskaltel's Igor Antón proved to be the good one. Riding alongside partially snow-covered rocks, the tough guy from the Basque Country swiftly took a dozen seconds out of the others. Contador started the chase a bit too late and couldn't keep his orange-clad rival from holding on to his advantage and making his winning march to the line complete.

Igor Antón snatched a great solo victory - that sent him on cloud nine, as the Basque confessed in his first after-race comments - and at the same time moved to the top of the overall; Contador had to settle for third place only (Soler was the runner-up today), albeit tomorrow's ITT clearly plays into his own hands. Machado and Menchov lost over a minute to the stage winner.

Alberto Contador's words in front of the TV cameras were like that: "I'm happy at the result I got and at the way my build-up is going. I knew that it was going to be a difficult stage today, and it turned out to be like that, also because of the weather; at some point I even thought about going clear solo but eventually opted for saving my legs for tomorrow's stage, that on paper suits my skills more than Anton's, but you never know ...".
