Tour of Thailand, Stage 2
Dave McCann Wins Stage, Jelly Belly's Reijnin Holds On To Yellow

Stage 2: Ubon Ratchathani - Mugdaharn 177.5 km
The onus was on JellyBelly to police the stage after they cranked it
up to score the top five placings in the ITT, so it was hard to see the logic of
an attack after 300 metres by three riders – a Malaysian, Ali Ahmad Fallanie,
Bridgestone Anchor’s Kenji Itami and a Plan B rider whose name unfortunately I
can’t get hold of. Hardest to fathom was the inclusion of Itami – he won the UCI
Tour of Okinawa in 2009 and came here with a decent enough team.
We took it easy in the pack, letting the Jelly Bean guys set the pace, though
the lack of aggression was partly due to the heat – 35 degrees and rising by
10am. Not a great deal happened til the last 50 km, with the breakaway trio
still in front by 3mins 25. Then all hell broke loose.
Attacks went off like firecrackers at Chinese New Year, first by some Kazakh
riders, followed by – well, just about everyone. Especially aggressive from 40km
in were the MedScene boys, in particular Nicholas White – also testing the
waters were the CKT Team with Deon Locke.
The reason for the sudden attacking was two-fold; and both involved Jelly
Bean. Will Dickenson and Michael Friedman put in a lot of work over the first
120 kilometers and fell off the pace, leaving the race leader Kiel Reijnen with
only two lieutenants, Will Routley and Jonathan Chodroff. Chodroff in particular
was impressive throughout, putting in massive turns of up to 5 km at a spell to
protect his leader.
Rutley punctured with 15 km to go and never got back on. The speed at this
point was up to 55, and hit a max of 60 km/h over the final kilometres. I was
hanging on for dear life, amazed by the pace. By the final km I was sure I was
in the third group and couldn’t understand why the others were sprinting; but
incredibly I finished in the same group as the stage winner, Dave McCann of the
Giant team.
Jelly Belly finished the day still in yellow but lost a lot of positions on
the GC as a result of their bad luck. Team manager Danny Van Haute said,
“At the end of the day we’re still in yellow, but with the heat and the
conditions it might be hard to hold on to it. We’re not demoralized [by today’s
events], but -well, we’re happy enough; though we lost the Team GC we are still
in Yellow. We’ll see what happens in the next few days.”
I finished and collapsed in a heap outside a little store, the owner of which
came running out to me with a cold Coke and a bag of ice. I looked up through
sweat-stinging eyes and in my near-delirious state uttered “I love you.” He
didn’t look too impressed...
…The Individual GC results just came in. I moved up to 5th.
I have to say a massive thank you to my teammates for supporting me, they all
fell away in the final kilometres but they were brilliant throughout.
Tomorrow we ride again…
