Vuelta a Murcia - Stage 1
Robbie Hunter Opens his 2010 Account in Yellow...
South African Robbie Hunter of Garmin/Transitions took the first stage in the
anticipated hotly contested sprint finish besting Rabobank Australian sprinter
Graeme Brown and HTC/Columbia's Vincente Reynes.
Milram's Roger Kluge and another South African and former Barloworld team
mate of Hunter, Dary Impey of RadioShack filled out the top five fastmen at the
finish out of a group of 55 riders containing all the favorites for the race
including Wiggins, Armstrong, and Denis Menchov.
The peloton split on the final climb while on the chase for four escapees and
pressure of RadioShack. The wind on the final kilometers produced more
splits with four groups chasing the leaders. Theo Bos winner of the recent
25th Clásica
de Almería didn't count in the sprint after being caught in the second group
after the final clim; Bos was
unable to re-join the front of the race.
For Hunter it is the 32 year old's first win of the 2010 season;
and he can enjoy it in the leaders Amarillo jersey; he is also points leader. Hunter will be 33 on
April 22nd.

The stage was animated by a four man breakaway initiated by Garmin's Danny
pate after only 11 kilometers after the start. Pate was joined by Alexandre
Blain of Endura Racing. Shortly after Dutch rider Lieuwe Westra (Vacansoleil)
and Spaniard Caja Rural's Rubén Reig bridged to the duo. The quartet worked well together opening a gap of over 5 minutes, with Westra
collecting most of the climbers points on the three category 3 climbs to take
the first climbers jersey.

After the final climb of Alto de Portman on with 25 km to go Westra
seeing the futility with of the effort after the gap fell to 35
seconds sat up and returned to the peloton. Pate, Reig and blain bravely held on
dangling off the front of the peloton led by the sprinters teams were swept up
by 18 km to go.
Stage 1: San Pedro del Pinatar - San Pedro del
Pinatar 166.5 km
Today's first stage opened to sunny skies with 19 degree weather (69 F); perfect
weather for the first stage. It didn't take too long after the neutral start for
the attacks to start with Garmin Transitions Danny Pate the first to open a gap
after 11 km, and quickly joined by Alexandre Blain of Endura Racing. The
French/American duo were joined in the next kilometer by Dutch serial attacker
Lieuwe Westra (Vacansoleil) and Spaniard Caja Rural's Rubén Reig.
The four opened a gap of 2:16 by the 18th km which ballooned to over 5
minutes by the 26 km marker. The quartet worked well together as they approached
the first of the 4 category 3 climbs on the day's race card:
71.4 km : Alto de la Cuesta
94.5 km: Alto de Cedacero
129.6 km: Alto de Portman
An attack by David Calatayud, David (Spanish National Team) and Cervélo
TestTeam's Portugese rider Joao Correia, Joao at 30 km only put the peloton on
the hunt accelerating the pace. The two were soon caught but the effort took two
minutes out of the four leaders.
Starting up the first climb the gap was 2:35, by the summit Westra led Blain
and Reig opening the gap to 3:02 with 90 km and 2 climbs to go. Over the summit
of the Alto de Cedacero Lieuwe Westra once again led taking the max climbing
points followed by Danny Pate and Alexandre Blain, the gap fell to 2:15 with 64
km to go.
Frenchman Blain led Westra and Reig the Meta Volante sprint in
Cartagena; After 113 km the lads lead had slipped to 1:25; but the peloton had
no intention of pulling the four back this early before the final climb...
with only 46 km to go time was on the side of the chasers and the chances
slimmer by the mile for our courageous adventurers.
Over the summit of the Alto de Portman,Westra once again led; successfully
taking all the mountain points on offer in the stage and the climbers jersey -
Reig, Blain and Pate followed finish in that order starting the descent to the
with 55 seconds and 35 kilometers to evade capture.
With 25 km to go Vacansoleil's Westra sat up and waited for the peloton...
with 18 km to go the trio of Danny Pate, Alexadre Blain and Rubén Reig were
swept up by the
Cervélo and Rabobank led peloton.
With ten km
to go the peloton was split by a crash as Milram, Garmin, HTC and Rabobank duel
for control of the peloton followed with 5 km to go in the end it is Garmin's
Robbie Hunter taking the win by a wheel over Graeme Brown of Rabobank.

Stage 2: Calasparra - Caravaca de la Cru 169.8 km
With any luck the riders will start under sunny skies on Thursday
when the climbing specialists will take center stage on Stage 2, over almost 170 kilometers from Calasparra
to Caravaca de la Cruz. the day could be a long one with 2 category 1
climbs. The Alto de San Juan at 1,227 meter climb will be climbed twice at 57 km
and 130 km with the final summit 39.8 km from the finish. Chances of a sprint
finish? Yes but from a select group of the elite mountain men more likely it
will be the first day for Armstrong, Wiggins and 2009 defending champion Denis
Menchov to test the legs of their rivals and play their cards for victory in
Murcia.
