Juan Antonio Flecha Breaks Down the Door to Claim First Flemish Classic!
Juan Antonio Flecha (Team Sky) won the 65th edition of the Omloop Het
Nieuwsblad the first of the Flanders Spring classics crossing the line solo
pointed to the sky, and then gave his signature victory celebration launching of
an arrow as he crossed the line. For the 33 year old rider in his tenth pro
season it is his first win in the Belgian classics and the first Spaniard to add
his name to the Omloop Het Nieusblad. - former Omloop Het Volk.

Flecha attacked the leading break with Philippe Gilbert and Jurgen Roelandts
on the cobbled climb of Lange Munte with 20 km to go. Roelandts was dropped a
Gilbert responded but he too didn't have the legs to respond to the Spaniards
attack. Fleccha ran his gap up to 41 seconds and managed to hold onto 35 seconds
at the finish.
Behind and attack at 6 km to go by Cervélo TestTeam's Heinrich Haussler
opened a gap on the field that absorbed Gilbert, Roelandts and Roy Curvers
netted the Australian ten seconds which he held on to to take second.
Tyler Farrar (Garmin/Transitions won the sprint for third coming around Luca
Paolini (Acqua & Sapone) at the line with HTC/Columbia's Marcel Sieberg rounding
out the top 5.
A happy and emotional Juan Antonio Flecha commented in the after race
interview, "It is very emotional win for me, I've been knocking on the door many
times and today I finally won." Flecha dedicated his win his Sky team mates
giving particular credit to Matthew Hayman, " who gave his wheel to me." Flecha
also honored the memory of his former Fassa Bortolo team mate Frank Vandenbroucke,
saying, " he undoubtedly is here today."

The first attack came 10km into the race, with Frederik Veuchelen (Vacansoliel).
He was soon joined by Roy Curvers (Skil-Shimano), Roger Kluge (Milram) and
Frederic Guesdon (Francaise des Jeux). The quartet had the approval of the
peloton and quickly opened up a gap of 5:30. Serial attacker Johnny Hoogerland,
David Boucher and Gregory Habeaux followed on an attempt to bridge to the two
leaders but they looked to have missed the trai9n as the gap to the lead quartet
grew to over 9 minutes.
Behind the peloton appeared uninterested for the first 60 km, but as the gap
grew to over 11 minutes for the leaders and the Hoogerland group at six minutes
the alarm went off in the pack and a chase was soon mounted with 110 km to go
the gap had shrunk to just over six minutes as Garmin/Transitions took the front
of the chase.
By the 60 km to go the Hoogerland Express was caught and the gap to the lead
quartet fell below four minutes; Kluge seemed to have gone one berg to far and
was dropped as the wind split the peloton behind with 40 riders trying to regain
the lead chase group.
It was only a matter of time, but it wasn't long and Tom Boonen attacked on a
hill and seem to power away from the group effortlessly... another hill followed
and he opened the gap to over ten seconds; the effort closed the gap to the four
leaders to 1:30 - look out folks the big dogs were on the hunt and the Alpha
classics dog was leading the pack which now strung out in a long line trying to
catch up. The poor buggers in the second group never saw it coming as the
riders fought trying to bridge but there was no wheel to follow but the one
immediately in front of you.
Sky and Garmin replied but Boonen was putting the hurt on with about 20
riders trying to catch his wheel an 50 or more chasing with trying to bridge.
Boonen made the selection on the next climb as a half dozen riders caught up
with 43 km to go Phillipe Gilbert, Joost Posthuma, Heinrich Haussler lead the
the chasing peloton by ten seconds and close in to under a minute on the four
outriders. Rabo's Posthuma flats and exchanges bikes with a mate but he's
closed out on the chase as the three Boonen, Haussler and Gilbert booking
time into the sunset.
With 30 km Boonen's chances come to an end with a flat; only Curvers and nd
Guesdon.defy the chase, but barely with only 20 seconds. Nuyens attacks and is
passes the duo. Out of the mayhem Gilbert, Juan Antonio Flecha and Roelandts
join Curver and Guesdon form a lead group... Curses Nick Nuyens flats and is
later picked up by the first chase group led by Haussler.
The final attack for the victory comes with 20 km to go when Juan Antonio
Flecha blows off Gilbert and goes it alone on the road to Ghent. Gilbert tried
to hold the Spaniards wheel, he just couldn't pull him back. Guesdon, Gilbert
and Roelandts join up; but even with three riders Flecha ran his gap up to 41
seconds to finish for the win solo with 35 seconds in the bank.
Haussler's attack with 6 km to go nets him second place and Tyler Farrar led
the first group of survivors to the finish to take third.

Flecha kisses his trophy... Photographers are always screaming out to the riders
on the podium, "Kiss your trophy." or "Bite your medal." - I'm waiting for a
rider to reply with, "Here you kiss this... or bite... that yourself." I
mean, who knows where that Trophy or medal has been?
