Tour of Sardinia Stage 5  & Photos
Local fans are over the moon as Loddo out sprints Petacchi. Kreuziger fans are over the moon as the Czech wins the overall after Horner fails to take the bonus seconds the Californian needed.

Cycling fans in Sardinia were extremely satisfied as Alessandro Petacchi and the other three other riders involved in the terrible pile-up that marred yesterday's sprint could get back in the saddle today. But they were arguably even happier as AleJet got pipped on the line today, because the man who outsprinted him at the end of Saturday's fifth and final (and flat) leg, from Sant'Antioco to the island's main city Cagliari over 140.6 km, was nobody else but Sardinia's best-known current bike racer - and in fact one of the two local riders taking part in the race: Alberto Loddo (Diquigiovani-Androni) took the spoils ahead of Petacchi and Oscar Gatto (as well as the rest of the field).

The stage came down a bunch sprint, to the delight of Loddo and Sardinian tifosi of course, but also of Roman Kreuziger (Cze - Liquigas-Doimo), who could keep half of his four-second lead on Christopher Horner (as much as a all of his good six-second advantage over Titi Voeckler) to turn himself into the overall winner of the 28th edition of the event. Despite finishing second to the young talent from the Czech Republic, Horner was the first ever podium finisher from outside Europe, and from English-speaking countries in general. Needless to say, Kreuziger is the first GC winner from Prague and surroundings.

Unbelievable but true: Giario Ermeti was not the most aggressive rider today. After a string of unsuccessful attempts in all past legs, the Italian attacking machine gave room to someone else: it was Croatia's Bruno Radotic (Meridiana Kamen Team) who stole the show most of the time on the way to the Cagliari seafront, as he went on a solo breakaway after 32 kilometers (after Kreuziger's crew dictated the pace in the earlier miles in order to discourage any would-be attacker from even trying...) and stayed clear for close to a hundred kilometers. The relatively unknown 26-year-old built up a maximum advantage of 03'50" on the field at the km. 66 check, but got chased down with about five miles left. Still, the man in Meridiana's red colors managed to win some always welcomed media exposure for his "minor" squad.

After such move came to an end, it was the turn of the (small but crucial) battle over the day's only bonus seconds, at stake at the Traguardo Volante in Cagliari about 6 km. from the finish. Horner gave it a go at winning the bonus, but some poor coordination with his domestique Ivan Rovny, and the presence of a Lampre rider in the "sprint", cost him all of his chances to win the GC.

Rovny ended up winning the sprint (by mistake, we suppose) and the Californian took third, thus gaining only a mere two seconds. Not enough for him to move to the top of the leader board. Then Petacchi's domestiques kept the race together until the finishing straight, even though AleJet failed to finish off the job, for one. And, for one, fans at the line weren't sounding too upset at that...

In fact the crowd went wild as Loddo notched up his third victory of the season (after opening his 2010 account with two wins at Tour de San Luis in Argentina), and his 27th career victory, but curiously the first ever on Italian soil. Unsurprisingly it was also the first ever triumph of a Sardinian pro rider inside Italy's borders.

Alberto Loddo had his arms raised as he crossed the line, and a smile as large as the whole Mediterranean sea at the end of a day in the saddle he'll never forget; the new King of Sardinia said that "both myself and the team were very hungry for victory today, and I gave even more than I could. I knew well the roads and the whole parcours, and I was looking forward to a race finish in Cagliari since the 2006 or 2007 Giro d'Italia; plus, the stage went through my hometown (Capoterra) today, and there were plenty of fans of mine there. A big thank you to all of them too!".

But there were some comments from the GC winner too: "I didn't expect I could finish atop the overall here, but to win a race is never an easy task, you know, so I take it as a sign that my legs are okay, and this makes me confident for the upcoming challnges too" Kreuziger said in front of the Italian TV cameras.
