USA Cycling hires Management Cycling Prof to manage Womens Program
USA Cycling announced today the hiring of Management Cycling Prof, S.L.to manage the organization’s Women’s Endurance Program.

Led by Director Sportif Manel Lacambra, the Spanish-based company will direct the national governing body’s women’s development efforts from the USA Cycling European Residence Center in Lucca, Italy. Lacambra will play an integral role in developing the next crop of world-class American female cyclists.

A professional women’s team manager for the past four years, Lacambra has managed the Univega Pro Cycling Team, and most recently, the German-based Cervelo Test Team (previously known as Cervelo Lifeforce Pro Cycling Team). Throughout his tenure with Cervelo, the Spanish team manager has worked very closely with American standout, Olympic gold medalist, and two-time world champ in the time trial, Kristin Armstrong (Boise, Idaho/Cervelo Test Team).

“After two great years of working with Kristin, I get the opportunity to work with the U.S. National Team and am very happy for that,” the 34-year-old Lacambra said. “Over the last few years, I have noticed that U.S. riders are talented but that they have a different style of racing than in Europe. I like the American people and their professionalism and will do my best to raise the U.S. Women’s National Team to the highest possible level.”

Lacambra is a former road racer and race mechanic. Under his team management, Cervelo Test Team grabbed 87 podium places in 2009 UCI events, including five World Cup victories.

“We need to continue to drive the development and education of American female cyclists, and Manel is one of the best directors in the world when it comes to professional women’s cycling,” explained USA Cycling’s Director of Athletics, Jim Miller, who ran the women’s development program for eight years before moving into his current role in 2009. “We’ve had one goal with our women’s development efforts and that has been to win world titles and Olympic medals. Under the direction of Manel and Management Cycling Prof, that goal is the same. We want to be nothing less than the best national team in the world.”

She will be a real asset to our team, as well as fighting for our own victories," said Egon van Kessel, Sports Director. Rebecca Romero Ready for The London-Paris 2010
Olympic and former world cycling champion, Rebecca Romero, has confirmed that she’s targeting the World Time Trial Championships and says the Commonwealth Games are also in her sights.

Romero will ride in this summer’s London-Paris 2010 as part of her switch from track to road cycling after her individual pursuit event was dropped from the Olympics for 2012. She was speaking as The L2P announced that American cycle giants, Specialized, will be the event’s official bicycle partner for the second year running.

Romero said: “The L2P is part of my preparation for the World Time Trial Championships in Melbourne in September. It’s something to train for and a good marker at the end of June. The Commonwealth Games in Delhi are another opportunity. I could be there. The only individual event left for me is the Time Trial. The idea is to have a go and see if it’s feasible.”

Romero, who won gold in the 3km individual pursuit at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and the 3km individual pursuit world title in the same year, will line up with riders for the start of The London-Paris 2010 on June 24th.

Romero is the only British woman and one of only two women in the world to win summer Olympic medals in two different sports. Romero was a rowing silver medallist at the Athens Olympics in the quad sculls.

She said: “I’d like to be successful in the Olympic Time Trial in London in 2012. That’s the ideal target and dream but I’m still in the initial stages of seeing if it’s possible. I’ve got to have a go at some rides. The idea is to build up my fitness in events like The L2P but 100 miles a day is going to be a huge effort.”

L2P director, Sven Thiele said: “The L2P 2010 looks like being the most exciting ride in our seven year history. Interest and participation in cycling is expanding rapidly and we are proud to be joining forces for a second year with Specialized, one of cycling’s global giants. Our partnership is aimed at giving cyclists the best technical experience possible.”

Richard Hemington, Specialized’s MD, said: “Specialized are delighted to be the official bicycle partner of the London-Paris ride for the second year running. The London-Paris ride generates a huge amount of excitement amongst cyclists but also within Specialized. Being part of it all and sharing with the riders those special moments during the ride is a real privilege.”

Specialized has a global reputation for innovation and the company is known for its focus on riders’ needs through technically advanced products. The 11 L2P Ride Captains will be kitted out with Specialized Tarmac or Roubaix Expert bicycles, Specialized helmets and shoes.

The London-Paris 2010 is the blue-riband of cyclosportives and is recognised as the closest the amateur rider can get to the Tour de France experience. The ride covers 550km in three days with a rest day in Paris. The Daily Telegraph recently ranked the event as one of the world’s top 25 participation events, alongside the London and New York marathons. The event has also been named in the top ten of adventure events for women.

Ex-professional rider, Magnus Backstedt and former footballers, Geoff Thomas and John Salako, have also signed up to ride in The L2P 2010. Other star riders will be announced shortly.

Magnus Backstedt said: “I’ve heard a lot of people taking about this event, so when I retired I decided I wanted to ride it. I’m still fiercely competitive but I also just enjoy riding and having fun. I will get a bit itchy after a few hours and no doubt I’ll be pushing it at some point.”

Geoff Thomas, who will lead a team of 25 Geoff Thomas Foundation riders raising money for leukaemia patients, said: “It’s great to be back with the Specialized team. They have been tremendous supporters of the GTF. The company’s backed us all the way with bikes and equipment. Specialized help us to raise money to campaign for better treatment for people with blood cancer and their support is making a significant difference.”

John Salako said: “Ahead of last year’s L2P I was training on an old mountain bike and the difference when I got on my Specialized bike was incredible. Everything suddenly changed when I got on a top of the range machine. Until then I never knew just how much enjoyment you could have on a bike. Having a bike like that just makes it so exciting to get out there a ride a hundred miles. I love my bike.”

Tour of America's Dairyland Adds Women's 3/4 Category to 10 Days of Racing in 2010
The Tour of America's Dairyland presented by Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, an omnium bicycle race across 11 Southeastern Wisconsin cities, will include a Women's 3/4 category, in addition to the Pro Women 1/2 category, in this year's daily race schedule, promoter Midwest Cycling Series has announced.

Cat 3/4 Women will have the opportunity to race in 10 consecutive days on this year's 11-day Tour, which runs June 17-27 and will features nine criteriums (lap races) and two road races for professional and amateur cyclists.

"We listened to the passionate feedback we received after the '09 Tour of America's Dairyland from women cyclists who said they wanted more opportunities to race" said Bill Koch of Midwest Cycling Series. "Basically, they said, 'if you build it, we will come!' so we're looking forward to some exciting women's racing of varying levels out there this year."

The addition of the Women's Cat 3/4 category will enable less experienced female riders the opportunity to compete against racers of a shared experience level for cash prizes and primes (incentives) before ten of thousands of spectators on the same courses as the Pros. In the Wisconsin area, the Tour promoter will work with advocates of women's cycling along with local bike shops to schedule women-only clinics this Spring to engage women in racing.

Added Koch, "Presenting sponsor Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board has been a proponent of women's cycling for years, and together with them, we remain committed to supporting women in the sport of cycling and giving as many women possible a chance to compete in an environment that is welcoming, rewarding and non-intimidating."

Opening day of the 2010 Tour of America's Dairyland will be celebrated minutes from Downtown Milwaukee in the village of Shorewood, Wis, near the shores of Lakes Michigan. The Shorewood Criterium schedule will feature Men's and Women's Pro races only, along with a kids event. Other Wisconsin communities hosting criteriums in the second year of the Tour include Thiensville, Grafton, Appleton, Sheboygan, Waterloo, Fond du Lac, Downer Avenue on Milwaukee's Eastside, and Waukesha. Greenbush and Elkhart Lake will be home to road races, the latter of which will be held on the historic Road America racetrack. Across the 11 days, Tour of America's Dairyland will award over $105,000 in cash prizes and primes to racers of multiple categories.

The high energy of the bicycle racing will be complemented in most communities by family-friendly activities, entertainment, a Sports Expo benefiting Racers Against Childhood Cancer (RACC), plenty of food and drink from local vendors, and much more.

Endorsed and supported by the Wisconsin Cycling Association and United States Cycling Federation, Tour of America’s Dairyland will have updates posted on www.TourofAmericasDairyland.com

TREADS.COM/DFT builds on 2009 successes, elite roster returns and new riders round out squad.

What began as a small women’s club in 2006 in Kansas City has grown to include a 14-woman pro/1/2 squad, a CAT 3 team and a large developmental CAT 4 team, as well as a multi-state co-ed club.
“When I began this journey 5 years ago, I wanted to give women a place to ask any questions they had, to be able to bounce ideas and issues off more experienced racers, and to help grow the sport of women’s cycling by continually bringing new riders into the sport,” says team director and racer Megan Hottman, who founded the team in 2006. “Now –we’ve got a huge race team, a huge club, fantastic and dedicated sponsors. Almost our entire 2009 squad returns for 2010, plus we’ve added veteran rider Liza Rachetto, masters Time trial champion Sydney Brown, and an experienced crit racer from out east, Kat Carr. Additionally, some of the women that originally joined our SW4 and SW3 teams have now upgraded to CAT 2 and we’re looking forward to exposing them to NRC racing and racing abroad in Europe.”

“The unique thing about our team,” says Hottman, “is that we all have full time jobs, many of us are married, several have kids . . . The team’s focus really is on balance, and on making racing a positive addition to our busy lives. For many of us, race weekends and stage racing are our ‘vacations,’ so they have to be fun for us.” Operating under this premise, the team saw some great results in 2009, including top-15 GC placings at Gila and Cascade, multiple Colorado state championships, a masters track national championship, and even a world championship win by Tricia Downing in the duathlon.

The team will target more NRC racing and will use local racing to work out kinks, practice team tactics, and generally get everyone ready to be competitive at the national level. The team’s first NRC race will be Redlands in March, followed by the Gila in April.

The team’s title sponsors are Treads Bicycle Outfitters (treads.com) and Moriarty Leyendecker PC (moriarty.com).

People often ask “what is DFT?” DFT stands for Defined Fitness Training, LLC, which is the organization responsible for running and managing the team. Hottman started DFT, LLC back in 1999, as a personal training business while she was in college and law school. It has since grown into the team management company and also provides spin class instruction for gyms and bike shops.

Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 highlights USA Cycling 2009 Center of Excellence winners

USA Cycling recently recognized five programs with $20,000 worth of cash grants through the USA Cycling Development Foundation Centers of Excellence program. With winners chosen based on organizational criteria and performance results in developing junior and U23 cycling athletes, the new women’s professional squad, Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12, received top honors.

“The Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 team (formerly known as the Proman Hit Squad) has proven their long-term vision and dedication to the athletes by scheduling above their own domestic agendas,” explained USA Cycling’s Director of Athletics Jim Miller. “It’s achieved significant accomplishments in terms of national and international results while balancing its focus on development and the mentoring of young riders.”

The women’s-only professional squad, Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12 plans to continue a balanced approach to development aiming for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. While the professional team is a primary focus, the program will continue to develop young American riders by providing emerging talent with opportunities to race with the elite squad, a formula which has proven successful. Riders will compete in North American and international races with a focus on World Cup events, World Championships and the 2012 Olympics under the direction of 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist, Kristin Armstrong.

Rad Racing (Olympia, Wash.), Team Swift (Fulton, Calif.), Boulder Devo (Boulder, Colo.) and the Young Medalists of the Lehigh Valley Cycling Club (Pa.) will also receive cash grants as honorable mention award winners.

Each recipient’s recognition is directly linked to their efforts toward the development of young cyclists.

Since the program’s inception seven years ago, USA Cycling has distributed over $140,000 to grass roots development programs thanks to donations to the USA Cycling Development Foundation.

Honorable mention designee Rad Racing boasts a roster of over 35 junior and U23 athletes who compete in road, track, mountain bike and cyclo-cross events across the country. Team Swift is another long-running junior development program with members in multiple states and great success at placing riders into National Team programs. Boulder Devo has proven to be one of the top mountain bike development squads in the country over the last few years, also with a focus on developing riders for international competition. The Young Medalists Cycling Team, operating under the Lehigh Valley Cycling Club (LVCC) will also receive a cash grant for the third year in a row. The program’s development team structure was formed in 2006 under the LVCC and features dozens of junior riders who specialize in road and track events.

USA Cycling recognizes the outstanding work of all of these Centers of Excellence as they continue to grow the model of athlete development in cycling and contribute to the elevated levels of competition and growth of the sport in the United States.
