2010 Tour of Qatar - Stage 4
Italian Francesco Chicchi (Liquigas) secures a tremendous win blowing the field away in a frantic sprint to the line.

Stage four of the Tour of Qatar was tipped to be hard, with the peloton facing brutal winds. However, that wasn’t the case with the wind favourable as the riders traveled north from The Pearl to Al Khor Corniche covering 146.5km for the race.

The sprinters teams made advantage of the conditions and it was Italian Francesco Chicchi claiming an action packed sprint to the line, in which there was another crash following from yesterday and a slight split in the peloton. Heinrich Haussler (Cervelo Test Team) was second and Juan Jose Haedo (Saxo Bank) finished in third place.

There were attacks from the outset with no one able to get away, but when Swiss cyclist Martin Kohler (BMC), New Zealander, Jesse Sergent (Trek Livestrong) and Belgian Sep Vanmarcke (Topsport Vlaanderen) launched a move, the peloton didn’t react. Not long after they got an advantage of 20 seconds and their advantage slowly built to just over two and a half minutes.

Vanmarcke’s move made Topsport Vlaanderen the only team to have a rider in the break in stages two and three, arguably making the team the most aggressive in the race.

Kohler, was the best placed rider in the move sitting 25th overall, 3 minutes and 44 seconds behind Wouter Mol and with the major teams in Garmin-Transitions, Vaconsoleil, Cervelo and Quick-Step applying pressure to the front of the peloton, their chances of staying away was minimal.

When there was 40 kilometers to go the gap was just below two minutes as Vaconsoleil were contributing the majority of the pace setting preserving the leader’s yellow jersey keeping the break in check. For the next 15km, the gap hovered around the 1 minute and 45 second mark with the sprinters teams holding back on making a move until later in the stage.

However, over the next 5km, the gap moved down to just under one and a half minutes and when the peloton hit the 20km to go marker, the break had a 1 minute and 15 second advantage on a hungry peloton.

With 17km to go, Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Transitions) punctured, but lucky for him the pace wasn’t that fast and he had no troubles getting back on.

At that point in time the break was in view and with approximately 14km to go, it was game over for the three riders up the road and the teams started getting prepared for a bunch sprint with the peloton being led by Garmin.

However, Farrar had bad luck again suffering another puncture with 10km to the finish line and it seemed that the luck wasn’t with him today and he probably wasn’t going to figure in the sprint to the line.

When the final 6 kilometers came by, Saxo Bank was doing the pace setting. Stuart O’Grady and Fabian Cancellara were putting in a tremendous pace to take control of the race.

Columbia-HTC and Team Sky moved to the front with 2km to go and it was set to be a fantastic sprint with no one able to take control of the peloton. Quick-Step then assumed brief control with three riders leading the race, however, Liquigas and Omega Pharma-Lotto took over.

In the final kilometer the peloton were strung out in a long line and the pace was that high that a small split occurred. It wasn’t big and the peloton got back together but as soon as they did there was a crash and about half a dozen riders hit the road.

400m to go it was Theo Bos sprinting to the line and then Chicchi made his winning move peeling out and got into the clear. No one could match his blistering pace and he crossed the line three bike lengths ahead of Heinrich Haussler (Cevelo Test Team) and Juan Jose Haedo (Saxo-Bank).

Chicchi was ecstatic after the race and showed he has a powerful kick and perhaps he is just one of the few sprinters that could challenge Mark Cavendish this year.

"The best sprinters in the world are here and they’re in great condition. We tried to pull the front in the last few kilometers but there was too much chaos. At the final roundabout Bennati gave me a hand and I set off with 300 meters to go and it went well from me," Chicchi said.

"We have two sprinters in the team. Bennati has shown how strong he is over the years. Yesterday he had a sprint and tomorrow I’ll give him a hand," he added.

Wouter Mol keeps the yellow jersey with an advantage of 15 seconds over Geert Steurs with Tom Boonen nearly 2 minutes back in third position.

Haussler now takes the sprinters jersey away from Tom Boonen and will look to defend it in the final two stages.

Stage 5 has the peloton covering 142km from Lusail to Madinat Al Shamal. Unless there are strong cross winds, another bunch sprint will be on the cards and it’s highly likely that Mol will keep the leaders jersey heading into the final stage on Friday.

Cervélo TestTeam
Heinrich Haussler - Wind interrupts sprint...
"Like the past two days it was a crazy final. Before the last roundabout I had a perfect position but then we had a sudden gust of strong wind and all the teams came from the side. At that point I was far back in the bunch and I tried to put myself in a good position again. Roger (Hammond) and Theo (Bos) prepared the sprint for me today but they didn't know that I wasn't there. Theo thought that I was on his wheel but I had to come from the back and though I tried to come close to Chicchi, he was already too far. The team worked really well but I was too far back. But tomorrow is another opportunity and we will keep on going."

"Once again there was no wind to speak of today," said Jens Zemke, Sports Director. "The race was marked again by the days' breakaway, a small one of 3 riders; Martin Kohler (BMC), Jesse Sergent (Trek Livestrong) and Sep Vanmarcke (Topsport Vlaanderen), who took all the intermediate sprint points. With 14 kilometres to go, we took the 3 riders back and than the final started. We tried to bring Heinrich to the best position possible and he ended up in second."

Heinrich Haussler moved up to eighth place in the general classification and is also the leader in the sprint classification. Cervélo TestTeam is in second in the team classification, nine seconds behind the leader Topsport Vlaanderen.

BMC Racing Team
Kohler Makes Pre-Race Plan Reality

Unlike most attack-from-the-gun moves, Martin Kohler’s long breakaway with two others actually was how the BMC Racing Team drew it up for Wednesday’s fourth stage of the Tour of Qatar.

Making The Leader’s Team Work
Kohler and fellow escapees Jesse Sergent (Trek LIVESTRONG U23) and Sep Vanmarcke (Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator) jumped the field as the 90-mile (146 km) stage got underway. For the next 80 miles, they worked together – gaining a maximum advantage of two-and-a-half minutes – before being caught with fewer than 10 miles to go. “Our plan was to keep the Vacansoleil guys (the race leader’s team) working and with me being only 3:44 off the lead it was good one,” Kohler said.

Kohler’s Ride ‘A Good Sacrifice’
BMC Racing Team Director Sportif John Lelangue said he admired Kohler’s dedication to executing the plan he drew up in the pre-race briefing. The Swiss rider is no stranger to breakaways this season, having spent more than 60 miles in one on Stage 1 at the Santos Tour Down Under last month.

“When you know there are so many kilometers to go and the probability is really weak to get to the finish with the sprinter’s teams riding after you in the final 20 kilometers, it is a good sacrifice,” Lelangue said. “It’s good to know we have riders like this who sacrifice themselves and make the leader’s team work hard all day.”

American John Murphy was the BMC Racing Team’s best-placed finisher in 13th place. With only two stages remaining and BMC Racing Team’s Marcus Burghardt sitting 2:05 off the lead of Wouter Mol (Vacansoleil Pro Cycling Team), it remains to be seen whether the German can move up in the overall classification. He is only 10 seconds off third-placed Tom Boonen (Quick Step). “The problem is the wind is very low, which is unusual for Qatar,” Kohler said. “With not a lot of wind yesterday and today, things have been staying together until the end. So tomorrow, we’ll try and bring him (Burghardt) in the first echelon again and try and drop a few more guys.”
