Mallorca Challenge - Trofeo Cala Millor

A loser to Robbie McEwen - and Koldo Fernandez de Larrea - on Sunday, Oscar Freire needed just 24 hours to have his redemption. The Spaniard came first across the Monday's second leg of the Mallorca Challenge series, the "Trofeo Cala Millor", an effort of 172.4 kilometres from Son Servera to Cala Millor.

As fully predictable, the race came down to an almost massive sprint finish, even though the peloton had to work hard in order to chase the "breakaway of the day" down. It was a quintet containing Luis Mas (Spa- Burgos Monumental), David Deroo (Fra - Skil-Shimano) and Ronan van Zandbeek (Hol - Van Vliet), all of them on the move since km. 8, as well as Manuel Ortega (Spa - Andalucia-Cajasur) and Andoni Blazquez (Spa - Orbea), that broke away from the peloton at km. 14 and joined the lead group a few minutes afterwards.

The guys gained a maximum advantage of six minutes and 34 seconds at the km. 27 check but their adventure off the bunch lasted for a long time after that. Long enough for Ortega to beat Mallorca's own Mas at the summit of the Es Pinagar fourth category climb and for the local idol to take his revenge as the road tilted upwards once more at Sant Josep. Van Zandbeek won the Meta Volante sprints at both Santanyi (youtube clip here) and Porreres while Blázquez took maximum points at the Llucmajor Special Sprint and Deroo enjoyed his slice of glory at the Sant Llorenç sprint (km. 137).

Their lead on the chase group was coming down fast however, and Van Zandbeek was quick in realizing it. That's why he attacked his breakaway companions about 30 km. from the finish. Such move earned the man some extra time (alone) on the front, while the four others were being brought back at km. 151. But also the Van Vliet athlete had to give up his hopes as he was reeled in with about 15 kilometres remaining.

Then the sprinters teams kept the pace high, so high that the group split in two with half a dozen kilometres to the line. This didn't keep many (but not all) of the top fastmen from battling it out on the finishing stretch, with the 33-year-old (34 a week from today) from Torrelavega finally back to the top of the podium after quite some time, and notching up his eighth victory in this race. André Greipel (Team Columbia) finished second and one more time had to postpone his first victory in this year's Challenge, while Manuel Cardoso (Footon-Servetto), Robert Förster (Team Milram) and Koldo Fernández (Euskaltel-Euskadi) made the top five spots complete. Robbie McEwen didn't figure in the day's top 15 places instead.

After-race comments by ... the winner:"I won some stage almost each time I contested the Mallorca Challenge, but I didn't come here over the last couple years. To start the season with a victory is always a morale booster. I know that people expect top quality wins from me, but also victories like this can make one feel more comfortable. Today I won without even being in top shape, so I'm very happy" and again "in every race you have great sprinters, and other riders who can make you lose. Today I made the most out of my experience, and also the job of my teammates. Yesterday I lacked some confidence and my leadoutman started (the sprint) a bit too soon. But we learned from our mistakes and everything went fine today".

After-race comments by Manuel Cardoso: "I went into the front again, I did my way against a very big rider like Freire, and even though my legs weren't giving any more power, I'm happy with myself and the team, which worked a lot during the entire stage and was always up-front, taking relays with the big sprinters' squads. They were there even at the finish, a very technical one, with lots of turns and top speed, helping me to find a great position in the ending sprint. Rabobank launched the finish with five riders, I felt I was losing the winning position and tried it with 300 meters to go to overtake some leadout riders, but Freire finished it very well and gained half a wheel on me at the line. This podium is another boost for my confidence and will allow me continue riding calmly; we'll see if I can put up with the cols in the last stage and contest the sprint, something I'm still not very sure of".

Few or no chances for redemption for Cardoso and Greipel tomorrow anyway. Things get hillier in Tuesday's third and "halfway" leg, the Trofeo Inca, running over a parcours of 157.2 kilometres with the first category Puig Major coming around 30 km. from the finish and after another tough (especially at this stage of the season) climb, the Coll de Sóller (Cat. 2).
