World Champion Marianne Vos powered away from rivals Daphny van den Brand and
Sanne van Paassen half way through the rain soaked race and proceeded to win in
style, finishing solo with a thirty second margin. Vos showed she is on
track to do well at the worlds in Tabor next weekend.
Due to overnight rain and an intermittent drizzle the course coated in
slippery mud. Katie Compton, was sidelined for the second week in a row by the
leg cramps that have interrupted her racing occasionally over the past several
years, meant that no one would have to chase the dominant American rider through
the mud.
From the start the action was non-stop; first down was Czech National
Champion Katerina Nash who crashed, catapulting over her bars and then had to
play dodge-em to recover her bike and return to racing.
While Nash tried to fight her way back into contention Vos, van Paassen and
van den Brand opened a gap of ten seconds on a c hase group composed of Amy
Bombroski and Elizabeth Brandau. On the front the duel of the three Dutch
women continued with attack after attack as each sought an advantage.
Finally Marianne Vos opened a gap coming out of an off camber turn in the
middle of the third lap, given a few meters. Vos doubled her effort and started
to pull away gaining 30 seconds by the end of the fourth lap. Behind her van den
Brand and van Paassen worked well together sharing the chase effort, but as hard
as they rode they couldn't make a dent in the gap of Vos.
Shortly after Nash had reached the front of the chase; She immediately
attacked hoping to close to the leaders, only German champion Hanka
Kupfernagel was able to respond to the Czech riders effort making it a
two-woman race for fourth place.
Vos rolled to the her third World Cup victory of 2010 with time to celebrate
and enjoy the cheers. Behind van den Brand finished with team mate van Paassen
allowing her to take second, while van den Brand's third place secured her
overall top ranking for the seasons World Cup.
vSanne van Paassen's second place gave her the points to jump over Katie
Comption on the World Cup podium putting the American champion in 4th.
Ten seconds later, Katerina Nash nipped Hanka Kupfernagel with the two riders
finishing 4th and 5th in that order. American Amy Dombroski managed her best
World Cup performance finishing in 9th. Other American results: Meredith
Miller in 20th, Maureen Bruno-Roy 23rd, and Christine Vardaros 40th.
