UCI World Cup Cyclocross -Hoogerheide: Elite Men
World Cyclocross Champion Niels Albert put in an impressive performance to
win the final world cup of the season in Hoogerheide, the Netherlands. Albert
was trapped in the back as Belgians Erwin Vervecken and Sven Nys took the hole
shot and set a blistering pace with Dutch rider Thijs Van Amerongen. Behind
a large chasing group that included Kevin Pauwels, Klaas Vantornout, Gerben
De Knegt, American Jonathan Page and series leader Zdenek Štybar.

Albert fought back from around 30th place to reach the front of the race by
the third lap to join rival Zdenek Štybar. Albert wasted no time attacking on
the next lap, only Nys and Stybar could respond... but Nys fell into trouble
in the next lap and fell off the pace.

Joined at the front by Pauwels the trio hammered the course attacking each
other... Stybar fell on a turn losing contact and with three laps to go Pauwels
erred and fell. Taking the advantage Albert pressed on. Pauwels was up
and chasing but now had a ten second deficit to the race leader. Behind Klaas
Vantornout attacked leaving Nys, De Knegt, Verveken and Page.

With one lap to go Štybar and Albert led with Pauwels close on the chase,
but a minor bobble by the Czech rider was all it took to give Albert enough
distance to take the win solo. Štybar recovered and finished ahead of Pauwels,
taking a second place finish and locking up the World Cup points standings.
Jonathan Page had his best World Cup of the season. Page was part of the front
group for the first part of the race and finished as 8th 1.06 down on Albert.
