Superprestige Cyclocross #4: Hamme-Zogge

The fourth race of the Superprestige series in Hamme-Zogge was just as in Hasselt a complete dominance of the Telenet-Fidea team with the doubles of Zdenek Stybar and Tom Meeusen. Zdenek Stybar was the best in a sprint with three over Sven Nys and Klaas Vantornout. World Champion Niels Albert didn't had his best day of the season and ended as fourth at 40 seconds. Sven Vanthourenhout, who returned into competition in Hasselt after illness, did very well and completed the top five. Jonathan Page finished as 19th at 1:54 of the champion of the Czech Republic. In the overall ranking of the Superprestige Sven Nys and Niels Albert are leading with 56 points followed by Zdenek Stybar with 55 points. Klaas Vantornout 46 points and Kevin Pauwels 37 points are rounding off the top five. The next race of the Superprestige is on Sunday 29 november in Gieten (The Netherlands).

Klaas Vantornout took the hole shot as he wanted to show himself in the race organized by his own Sunweb Projob teammanager Jurgen Mettepenningen. Vantornout was followed by Niels Albert, Sven Nys, Kevin Pauwels, Zdenek Stybar and Gerben De Knegt. Halfway through the first lap Albert took the lead as he wanted to make the race very tough from the beginning. At the end of the second lap the pace went down and the lead group became bigger as Sven Vanthourenhout, Bart Aernouts, Radomir Simunek and Jan Verstraeten were able to rejoin.

In the eight lap, of eleven laps in total, Albert attacked and only Nys, Vantornout ad Stybar were able to follow. The rest dropped. The four stayed together until the last lap. Stybar took the lead as he wanted to keep the break together for the sprint. Due to the efforts of Stybar Albert dropped off the break. It turned down in a sprint with three with Stybar taking his second win of the weekend.

Men-U23
Tom Meeusen, has just as Stybar, a very good weekend, with the double win Hasselt and Hamme-Zogge. The Belgian of Telenet-Fidea won solo over Dutch Micki van Empel and Belgian Champion Vincent Baestaens. From the beginning Tom Meeusen attacked and was joined by Micki van Empel the surprising winner of Ruddervoorde. The two worked well together and in the final lap Meeusen was able to drop his break companion.

Baestaens broke clear from a chase group of eight to take the third podium step. Pawel Szczepaniak and Jim Aernouts completed the top five. In the overall ranking of the Superprestige Tom Meeusen leads with a 10 points advantage over Jim Aernouts and 20 points over European Champion and World Cup leader Robert Gavenda.

Youth races
In the youth races it was once again a complete dominance of the Van der Poel's. Just as the previous races in Hasselt and Asper-Gavere the wins went to Mathieu van der Poel (beginners) and David van der Poel (Juniors). The youngest son of Adrie van der Poel and grandson of France's Raymond Poulidor, Mathieu van der Poel
, dominated the beginners race from start to finish. Belgian Yorben van Tichelt and Dutch Koen Weijers finished at respectively 17 and 29 seconds. The oldest son David van der Poel was the best in a sprint with three over his compatriots Mike Teunissen and Gert-Jan Bosman. The Dutch dominated the race with 6 riders in the top 10. The top three riders broke clear in the first lap. In first instance they were with four but Danny van Poppel dropped off the break in the second lap and finished finally as sixth. Laurens Sweeck, who finished as 10th, remains in the overall lead of the Superprestige. Michiel van der Heijden and Mike Teunissen are second and third. David van der Poel moved up to rank 4.

Next week the scene will continue on 28/11 in Koksijde (World Cup) and on 29/11 in Gieten (Superprestige). Daily Peloton will cover both races with reports, results and photos..
