Cyclocross: Gazet van Antwerpen #3 - Hasselt

Czech Zdenek Stybar (Telenet-Fidea) has won the third race of the Gazet van Antwerpen Trofee in Hasselt. After lots of second and third places Stybar finally won his "big" race. In a sprint with four "Styby" was the fastest over teammate Kevin Pauwels, World Champion Niels Albert and Sunweb's Klaas Vantornout. Belgian Champion Sven Nys crashed and finished as sixth. In the overall ranking Albert is leading with 70 points. Nys and Stybar follow at respectively three and four points.

Kevin Pauwels and Klaas Vantornout had the best start in Hasselt. Both Niels Albert and Sven Nys went down, in respectively the second and third lap, but with Nys it took almost 45 seconds before he was back on his bike. He lost so much time his chances for the win were over. Albert had more luck and by the end of the third lap he was back in front.

In the meantime an elite break was formed with Niels Albert, Klaas Vantornout, Bart Aernouts, Kevin Pauwels and Zdenek Stybar. With less than four laps to go Bart Aernouts profit from the rivalry of the others and created a gap of over 10 seconds. The Rabo Belgian stayed up front for two laps before the four others came back due to the work of Albert.

In the final lap Zdenek Stybar attacked and created a gap of 10 meters. Pauwels didn't do anything in the chase with team mate Stybar in front. Due to that World Champion Niels Albert had to do all the work and when entering the asphalt section towards the finish the four leaders were back together. In the meantime Bart Aernouts paid for his efforts and dropped off the break.

It came down to a sprint with four. Stybar started the sprint early and hold off his team mate Kevin Pauwels by half a wheel. Albert and Vantornout finished as third and fourth at a few bike lengths.

Men U23
Tom Meeusen (Telenet-Fidea) has won the U23 race in Hasselt. The Belgian was the fastest in a sprint of four over European Champion and teammate Robert Gavenda, Jim Aernouts and Kenneth Van Compernolle.

The early laps were animated by Belgian Champion Vincent Baestaens. After being caught a lead group of ten was formed with Meeusen, Gavenda, Aernouts, Van Compernolle, Baestaens, Jouffroy, Huenders, Denuwelaere, Bosmans and Boden. The ten didn't stay together for a long time as Aernouts, Meeusen, Gavenda, Van Compernolle and Baestaens broke clear. The latter one dropped and a sprint between the four others had to decide the winner. Just as in Asper-Gavere Tom Meeusen was the best adding another victory to his impressive palmares.

The youth races were just as in Asper-Gavere won by the sons of Adrie van der Poel. Mathieu van der Poel won the beginners race while David van der Poel took his fifth season win in the Juniors race.

The next race for the GVA trofee is on 12 december in Essen.
