The 2009 Tour of Britain Attracts 4 Million
Spectators!
Large spectator numbers and increased TV viewing figures show interest in the
sport has grown
SweetSpot,
organisers of The Tour of Britain have today announced that the 2009 event was a
resounding success, with increased numbers of spectators on the race route and
across television and media coverage watching the best field of professional
cyclists ever assembled for a British professional race.
The 2009 event attracted well over one million spectators over the course of
the eight race stages as The Tour of Britain made its way from the Grand Depart
in Scunthorpe on Saturday 12 September across the length and breadth of the
nation, leading to the historic final stage in London on Saturday 19 September.
The streets of central London were closed for a sporting event on a Saturday
for the first time ever to welcome The Tour’s Grand Finale, and the capital’s
public responded in force with over 150,000 people lining the iconic race
circuit which took in the sights of Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, and Victoria
Embankment, to welcome the race into the nation’s capital.
In addition to record live spectator numbers, through daily hour long TV
coverage on ITV4, The Tour of Britain reached an audience of over three million
television viewers across the eight days of the 2009 event. These spectators and
TV viewers were witness to Edvald Boasson Hagen from Team Columbia- HTC taking
overall honours as the winner of the 2009 Tour of Britain while laying claim to
the coveted Bikeability Yellow Jersey, as well as The Prostate Cancer Charity
Points Jersey.
Working with its event stakeholders and regional partners, The Tour of
Britain engaged with many thousands of school children in 2009, giving schools
and teachers across the country a platform to promote cycling as a healthy sport
and sustainable pastime. These efforts were noticeable across the country, but
perhaps most so in the Southwest on stage 6 – Frome to Bideford – and stage 7 –
Hatherleigh to Yeovil – where a total of 62 schools attended en mass to
experience the atmosphere and cheer the riders along.
“The 2009 race was a great success. The crowd numbers, and the number of
school children that attended the race were a big step forward for us, and this
shows that cycling as a sport is growing exponentially in its national
popularity. We at The Tour of Britain are extremely pleased to be a key part of
this process”, said Hugh Roberts, CEO for The Tour of
Britain.
2009 also saw SweetSpot establish the hugely successful Tour Series televised
city centre race series as well as The Prostate Cancer Charity Tour Ride
sportive event, which took place in Stoke-on-Trent on Sunday 6 September. Both
these events add to the SweetSpot portfolio and increase the reach and potential
for commercial partners who wish to benefit from the increased interest and
media coverage of cycling in the UK.
The Prostate Cancer Charity Tour Ride, a first of its kind event in Great
Britain, provided members of the public with a unique opportunity to get on
their bikes and ride the official Stoke-on-Trent stage of The Tour of Britain
race, all in support of a fantastic cause. “The Prostate Cancer Charity Tour
Ride proved to be a huge success with over 1300 cyclists taking part in the
inaugural event,” commented Roberts. “The feedback from riders who took part has
been overwhelmingly positive and we are planning, together with The Prostate
Cancer Charity, to put on more mass participation rides linked to The Tour of
Britain in 2010. Our aim is to bring people together on their bicycles in aid of
a good cause, while also getting healthier in the process and having a fantastic
day out.”
The Tour of Britain organisational team is hard at work planning the 2010
Tour Series, Tour Rides and Tour of Britain race and is in discussions with
partners and sponsors for next year’s event roster.
The Tour of Britain is an elite international cycle race granted 2.1 status
by cycling’s world governing body, the UCI, and each year attracts a field of
the world’s best teams to compete on British roads, including former World and
Olympic champions and Tour de France stage winners and yellow jersey wearers.

The Tour of Britain is proud to be partnered with
The Prostate Cancer Charity.
The Prostate Cancer Charity - The Prostate Cancer Charity is a proud partner of
The Tour of Britain and this forms part of a new initiative ‘Unite ByCycling’,
which has been set up to raise awareness of prostate cancer and support for men
and their families affected by the disease. This will feature a range of cycling
events, involving both professional cyclists and the general public. The
activity is focussed around the UK’s premier professional cycling events, The
Tour of Britain, and The Tour Series and will extend to events that amateurs and
cyclists of all abilities can enter, all with one goal in mind: to unite people
through cycling and raise awareness of prostate cancer. For more information,

The London-Paris 2010
Thursday, June 24th to Sunday, June 27th
HotChillee, the global marketing and events company which stages the pro-am
style cycle ride, has announced the 2010 dates as early as possible because of
unprecedented interest in next year’s event.
Director, Sven Thiele said: “The 2010 L2P comes just a week before the Tour
de France starts in Rotterdam and cyclists across the world like the idea of
participating in a Tour-style experience just before the start of cycling’s
biggest event. Interest in our 2010 ride started almost as soon as we’d crossed
the finish line in Paris in June and traffic on our website has been enormous.
“Cycling is big news and with the Team Sky and RadioShack squads competing in
the Tour de France next year, interest in the sport is at an all-time high.”
London-Paris is recognised as THE professional event for amateur riders. The
ride covers around 550km in three days, with a rest day in Paris. Cyclists enjoy
full logistical support, with rolling road closures and motorbike outriders. It
is the closest the amateur rider can get to the Tour de France experience and
The L2P is now the blue riband event of cyclosportives.
The event also attracts ex-cycling pros and leading sports stars. The 2009
line up included Tour de France winner, Stephen Roche, double Olympic champion,
James Cracknell, Team Sky sports manager, Scott Sunderland and footballers,
Geoff Thomas and John Salako.
Thiele said: “Cyclists on The L2P enjoy the combination of professionalism
and camaraderie. We’ve already had enquiries from some big names in sport and
show business and we’re expecting to announce a star-studded line-up for 2010.”
Tour de France and Giro d'Italia winner and former world champion, Stephen
Roche said: "The London-Paris is one of the best experiences a cyclist can have.
The ride has all the professionalism of a pro-event like the Tour de France and
is a real test of physical and mental endurance. But it's also an event with
legendary camaraderie and that's why I love it. The L2P is all about serious
cyclists having fun out on the road. If you love cycling, The L2P is the event
to do."

Garmin Extends Title Sponsorship of Team
Garmin-Slipstream Through 2013
GPS Leader Paves the Way for Continued Development of World’s Elite Cycling
Squad
Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, announced
today that it has extended for an additional three years its title sponsorship
of Team Garmin-Slipstream, the ProTour cycling team dedicated to ethical
sporting and developing the next generation of cycling champions. The extension
for the U.S.-based team comprised of elite talent from around the world is an
addition to the company’s current sponsorship through 2010, marking one of the
most significant multi-national sponsorship deals in the history of professional
cycling.
“The success of the team spans the globe and surpassed our expectations for
the first year and a half of our title sponsorship, bringing Garmin’s reputation
for quality, commitment, performance and productivity into countless households
in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia,” said Jon
Cassat, Garmin’s vice president of communications. “Our objectives
were – and continue to be – to integrate our products on sports’ biggest stages
and to build global brand awareness. Whether capturing victories around the
world, winning national championships or working to develop future generations
of talent, Team Garmin has helped us achieve those objectives and has made an
impression on billions of potential customers.”
The partnership, which will run through the end of 2013, will provide the
team with the opportunity to continue its founding mission: building the next
generation of cycling champions. It will also allow Garmin, Slipstream and their
partners to develop new technology that will give the team advantages on the
road. Most important, the long-term sponsorship provides the team with a
platform and foundation for retaining and recruiting the best riders in the
sport.
“Since signing with Slipstream prior to the 2008 Tour de France, Garmin has
seen an outpouring of support from cyclists and sports fans across the globe,
along the roads of major tours and in the stores of our retail partners,” said
Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “While providing
feedback on product development, the team has shown fans everywhere that the
best-in-class Edge® 705 cycling GPS can stand up to the sport’s steepest
challenges while suiting the needs of cyclists of any caliber.”
Garmin, which has spent 20 years developing technologies and innovation to
enhance users’ lives, has already used the team’s unique perspective and
invaluable feedback in developing the new GPS-enabled Edge 500 (expected
availability 4th Quarter 2009), which tracks speed, distance, time, GPS
position, elevation, calories burned, climb and descent. After the ride, data
downloaded to Garmin Connect allows cyclists and staff to study the statistics,
looking for any room for improvement for the next day. This data also provides
fans and the media access to the riders’ data. The team also benefits from
Garmin’s GPS technology in the support vehicles as the iconic Garmin nüvi® helps
the team bus and support vehicles travel with speed and ease across two
continents. The route-planning capabilities and preloaded maps and points of
interest help the team caravan, especially in grand tours when every day brings
different destinations and challenges.
“When Garmin first decided to partner with us, we said we believed that a new
era of cycling was upon us. Today, with this significant extension, we can now
say – the era is here,” said Jonathan Vaughters, CEO of Slipstream Sports, LLC,
the sports management company that runs the team. “Garmin’s commitment to
innovation and integrity mirrors our own, and knowing that we have their
partnership for the next four years means that we can continue to develop the
next generation of cycling champions. We can continue to make technological
innovations that will give our riders a competitive advantage on the road. And
off the road, we can continue to help better the sport.”
Garmin and Slipstream Sports share similar success stories rooted in hard
work and innovation. Just as Garmin is a global leader with facilities in North
America, Europe, Australia and Asia, the Garmin-Slipstream team assembles elite
athletes from around the world. Team Garmin features Giro d’Italia, Tour de
France and Vuelta stage winners and national champions from several countries.
Garmin’s employees and customers, like the cyclists, staff and fans of Team
Garmin, are in the air, behind the wheel and on the move. And they are always
thinking of ways to adapt and improve.
“Garmin’s business goals are to extend the reach and success they have
achieved in the US and Europe and to create a global marketing platform for
their brand,” said Matt Johnson, President of
Slipstream. “The extension of this sponsorship is a testament to the
team meeting those business goals.”
Owned and managed by Slipstream Sports, Team Garmin-Slipstream is dedicated
to promoting ethical sporting and developing the next generation of cycling
champions. In 2007, Slipstream created the most progressive anti-doping system
in the professional sports world and now works with Anti-Doping Research, Inc. (ADR)
and ADSI (the Anti-Doping Sciences Institute) to continue its anti-doping
mission. For more information on Team Garmin, visit
