Columbia-HTC's André Greipel has won the 2009 edition of Paris-Bourges. The German sprinter took his 20th win of the season, the 85th for the team, in the bunch sprint over Juan José Haedo and Alexandre Usov. Roger Hammond and Sebastien Chavanel round off the top five.

The race over almost 194 km was animated by a big break of 19 which broke clear after 40 km. The break including Morris Possoni, Vicente Reynes (Team Columbia), Anthony Geslin (Française des Jeux), Maryan Hary, Hervé Duclos-Lassalle (Cofidis), William Bonnet (Bbox Bouygues Telecom), Renaud Dion, Cédric Pineau (AG2R-La Mondiale), Pablo Lastras (Caisse d'Epargne), Nicolas Jalabert (Agritubel), Dominique Rollin (Cervélo), Gerben Löwik, Björn Leukemans, Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil), Johan Mombaerts (Auber 93), Jean-Marc Marino (Besson-Sojasun), Gaël Malacarne, Lilian Jégou (Bretagne-Schuller) and Janek Tombak (CC Bourgas) stayed in front for almost 120 km and had a maximum lead of 2.30 at km 75. The break didn't stayed together as the situation changed all the time. Especially Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil), Cédric Pineau (AG2R-La Mondiale), Jean-Marc Marino (Besson-Sojasun) and Anthony Geslin (Française des Jeux) were very active but with 11 km to go the bunch was brought back together.

Another attack with 8 km to go from Frédéric Guesdon (Francaise des Jeux), Lars Ytting Bak (Saxo Bank), Julien Simon (Besson-Sojasun) and Stéphane Bonsergent (Bretagne-Schuller) didn't had any success either as they were caught with 3 km to go. In the remaining of the race the sprinter's team controlled the race and Columbia-HTC perfectly lead-out Greipel for the win. It's the second win of Columbia-HTC in this race. Last year the win went to Austrian Bernhard Eisel.

Team report
Columbia-HTC scores 85th win of season in France

André Greipel sprinted to victory in the Paris-Bourges Classic on Thursday, netting Team Columbia-HTC's 85th win of the 2009 season. Greipel was the fastest in the bunch sprint which decided the 193.3- kilometre event, and resulted in the sprinter's 20th victory of 2009.

Following Bernhard Eisel's victory in Paris-Bourges in 2008, Greipel's triumph is Columbia-HTC's second straight victory in the French Classic. "I never expected to get so many wins this season, particularly after a tough beginning to the year," commented Greipel. "But today I won again, even though we had to work really hard to get it and there were attacks all the way through. My team-mates got me in the right position, and I did a very long sprint, from about 300 metres to go. Haedo almost got past me, but when he tried to overtake me he had to move out, and the wind made it harder for him. So I eventually beat him by about half a bike length."

With an early move of around 20 riders getting away, Greipel said he hadn't really expected a bunch sprint to materialise. "Fortunately we had two guys in there, [Morris] Possoni and [Vicente] Reynes, the break's lead stayed at around two and a half minutes, and so we didn't have to work so much. Then the best moment for me came when Bernie [Eisel] said to me, 'Hey, relax, we'll get the break back and we'll get you to that sprint, too'."

Greipel's victory means the Columbia-HTC men's team has now matched their 2008 total of 85 wins in one season.

Team Saxo Bank: Juan José Haedo second in Paris-Bourges

Today, Team Saxo Bank took part in the 193 kilometer long French one-day-race, Paris-Bourges with five riders: Kurt-Asle Arvesen, Juan Jose Haedo, Michael Mørkøv, Marcus Ljungqvist and Lars Bak. However, there were no great expectations beforehand when in reality it was not quite the line-up as planned as the team already had lost Matti Breschel and Karsten Kroon due to illness, before the race even started.

The race has previously been won by Team Saxo Bank-profiles Lars Bak (2005) and Jens Voigt (2003), and sports directors Kim Andersen and Lars Michaelsen have celebrated triumphs here in 1987 and 1994.

Even though the expectations were not high before the starting signal sounded, the team still managed to deliver an outstanding performance:

"You should always outweigh expectations with facts and Haedo's second place today was very satisfying. The riders performed excellent teamwork. Since we did not have a rider in the initial break, Mørkøv went to the front of the field to set the pace with the other teams. By the end of the race our entire team was represented in the front to optimize Haedo's chances for a top result and they succeeded. A great team effort and a satisfying outcome”, said sports director Dan Frost.

André Greipel (Columbia) won the race.

Cervelo: Hammond 4th in Paris-Bourges
Continuing his strong late season showing, Roger Hammond finished fourth today in Paris-Bourges. André Greipel (Team Columbia), won the race with Juan José Haedo (Saxo Bank) taking second and Alexandre Usov (Cofidis) placing third.

Cervélo TestTeam was active throughout today's race. After 40 km Dominique Rollin was in a breakaway that stayed ahead for almost 120 km. The group had a maximum gap of 2 minutes but the peloton chased the group down with 11 km to go. In the final the team prepared to set up the sprint for Martin Reimer. Roger Hammond tried to bring him into the right position but Martin lost Roger's wheel and so Roger ended up in the sprint on his own, finishing fourth. Martin Reimer ended in 8th position.

"We were a little bit unhappy that Martin lost the wheel, but I think we can be happy that we came in fourth," commented Jens Zemke, Sports Director.
