38th Edition du Tour de Vendée Cycliste
The Penultimate Coupe de France Battle in Vendee had a surprise winner as
Katusha strikes twice for victories this weekend.
While team mate Filippo Pozatto was took the win in Italy Saturday, Russian
team mate Pavel Brutt doubled the weekend wins for the Katusha outfit when he
made good on a late attack to take an impressive solo victory in the 38th
edition of the Tour de Vendee.
Mathieu Ladagnous of Francaise des Jeux led the first group of 12 chasers to
the finish ten seconds later with Thomas Voeckler (Bbox Bouygues Telecom) third.
On their wheels, Florian Vachon of team Roubaix Lille Metropole and Lilian Jegou
of Besson Chaussures/Sojasun filled out the top five.
The penultimate race of the Coupe de France presented a fierce battle over
the 206 kilometers; Leaving Luzon he riders drove to a fast pace through the
first part of the circuit through Fontenay-le-Comte, Vouvant, Reaumur, Pouzauges,
then Saint-Michel Mont Mercure.
After two hours of racing where none of the attacks gained enough ground to
meet success the peloton split into two groups on the climb of the Puy du Fou at
near the half way point of the race, 95 kilometers. More than a dozen
riders including French Champion Dimitri Champion (Brittany Schuller)
Irish Champion and Nicolas Roche (Ag2r la Mondiale), Agritubel trio:
Nicolas Vogondy, Brice Feillu, and Nicolas Jalabert of, Thomas Voeckler
and Jerome Cousin (Bbox Bouygues Telecom), and Julien Fouchard (Cofidis) opened
a gap of 1:45; running into a storm cell wind gusts buffeted the riders and they
rain fell complicating the race with 100 km to go.
With 55 km to go Serguei Ivanov bridged to the leaders; this only drove the
peloton to a higher pace to narrow the gap to the dozen riders. After 4 hours of
racing there was only one minute separating the two groups and 31 kilometers for
the break to resist. And resist they did gaining ground as they passed the
20 km to marker at the entry into from Roche-sur-Yon.
Brutt sprung his attack with 8 km to go opening a 100 meter gap taking it to
15 seconds with 3 km to go. From there the Katusha rider poured everything he
had into the race for the finish line as the chase continued to close in
on him. With one km to go the gap closed to 50 meters as the 15 riders tried to
close the gap to the Russian... but they couldn't do it as Pavel Brutt had
enough time to sit up, zip his jersey up and celebrate before he crossed the
line to take the victory.
The break held on to thatke the first 15 places over the next 17 seconds with
the first chase group coming in only 4 seconds later; with the peloton following
in small groups in the next two minutes. It was one of those "in the nick of
time" victories over the chase.
Jimmy Casper of team Besson Chaussures/Sojasun hold an insurmountable lead in
the Coupe de France with 193 points over Young Gun Romain Romain of Agritubel
with 100 points and Anthony Geslin of Française Des Jeux in third with 96.
