Live coverage of the Women's time trial in Mendrisio Updated with Photos

Welcome to the 2009 World Road Championships in Mendrisio (Switzerland). This morning Australian Jack Bobridge won the U23 Time Trial. Portuguese Nelson Oliveira second and German Patrick Gretsch third. Americans Tejay van Garderen and Peter Stetina were respectively: 13rd and 20th. We are now live with the women's individual time trial.

41 women start today, with defending Champion Amber Neben as last. She will take the start 16:15 local time

We are off with Monrudee Chapookham of Thailand. Chapookham was 13rd at the Asian Cycling Championships ITT.

The next one off the ramp is Ukrainian Eivgenia Vysotskaya. She finished recently as sixth in the Tour de L'Ardeche and is the reigning Ukrainian champion on the road and the ITT.

Now Dutch Ellen van Dijk of Team Columbia-HTC starts. Van Dijk is the reigning European Champion against the clock and she recently won the time trial in the Holland Ladies Tour.

 The Ladies are riding 2 laps of 13.4 km. A total distance of 26.8 km on the hilly course that goes through Mendrisio. The finish point is the same as that used in this weekends road races.

The women will starts in four blocks. The first three of 10 riders, the final block of 11 riders.

Mexican Veronica Leal is off the ramp too. Veronica Leal is a rider of the American Team Type 1 formation. She was third at the Pan-American Cycling Games (RR) and 4th in the time trial of that event.

In the meantime Slovenian Blaza Klemencic is off the ramp. Klemencic was second at the Slovenian Nationals in the road race after Sigrid Corneo.

The Spanish woman with the most beautiful name in the peloton: Eneritz Iturriagaechevarria Mazaga is off the ramp.

1414 CEST - She finished 3rd in the Route de France this year. The Route de France won by American Kimberly Anderson. She was also 4th at the Spanish ITT Nationals and 5th in the road race.

Now Monica Ceccon from the Caribbean has start. She was second at the national championships (RR) of Saint Kitts and Nevis (Charlestown)  Three riders left beforeall  the first block has started, Vysotskaya comes thru at the first intermediate point after 6 km. She is 21 seconds faster than the women from Thailand.

Another Ukranian Iryna Shpylova is off the ramp.

Viljia Sereikaite from Lithuania is off the ramp She was second at the lithuanian ITT Nationals

1417 CEST - The last one off the ramp from the first block before having an almost half hour break before the second block starts is Jessica Phillips (USA) Phillips is the reigning American champion against the clock; She was also 6th in the Memorial Davide Fardelli (ITT),  and she won the ITT in the Cascade Cycling Classic. In the same Cascade Classic she finished 8th overall.

Iturriagaechevarria is at the intermediate point. Ellen van Dijk still in the lead there.

The first intermediate point is on top of the only climb on the course. The climb has sections of 10%. Monica Ceccon is at the intermediate point 1:40 behind van Dijk and we are only 6 km so far. Monica Ceccon is trained by Gordon Fraser, of the famous Chris Carmichaelgroup, the trainer of Lance Armstrong.

1420 CEST - Ellen van Dijk has bridged up to Vysotskaya who started 1:30 earlier: Van Dijk is really good underway so far.  Van Dijk crosses the finish at 18:33 and turns into the final lap. After 13.4 km she is the fastest of three riders who crossed the line.

Jessica Phillips is 13 seconds slower on top of the climb after about 6km. Everyone of the first block has crossed the top of the climb for the first time. The top 2 at the summit so far:

2. Jessica Phillips at 13 seconds

Eneritz Itturiageechevarria crosses the line as second for the moment 46 seconds down on Van Dijk. Veronica Leal is third. We are waiting for Jessica Phillips to see what the time of Van Dijk is worth.

In about 10 minutes we start with the second block. The second block consist of:

From these riders Bridie O'Donnell (Champion of Oceania) and Wendy Houvenaghel (recent winner of the Trofeo Champenois and Track Specialist) are the best riders against the clock

1432 CEST -  Ellen van Dijk is on top of the climb after 19.36 km and by far the fastest time thus far. At the finish passage Phillips is 8 seconds slower than Van Dijk. A second place with one lap to go.

 Its for the final block but good old grandmother of cycling Jeannie Longo (50 years of age) will take the start too. I think she is the winningest cyclist of all time.

On top of the second and final time the climb Veronica Leal is 1:26 slower than Van Dijk. Klemencic 1:30 slower. Big time differences already

Eneritz Iturriaga on top of the climb at 47 seconds of Van Dijk. A currently second position. Phillips is riding steady and still 8 seconds behind Van Dijk. A strong and constant time trial thats for sure.

1440 CEST - Shpylova on top of the climb at 1:25 of Van Dijk. A third place for the moment.

And we are off with the second block. Martina Ruzickova from the Czech Republic. She was 10th in the Memorial Davide Fardelli. 3rd in the Krasna Lipa stage race, She is the current Champion of the Czech Republic in the RR and second in the ITT.

 Here comes Van Dijk at the finish. The best time thus far is 38:10.08.

The next one off the ramp is Bridie O'Donnell. She is the current Champion of Oceania against the clock. she won the Tour of Chongming Island I.T.T, was second overall in the Tour du PEI, 7th in the Memorial Davide Fardelli and 5th in the Chrono Champenois. As you can see a really good Time Trialist.

1445 CEST - Also off the ramp Trackie Wendy Houvenaghel. Wendy gave it a try on the road and immediately won the Chrono Champenois. She was also second at the British ITT Nationals behind Emma Pooley.

Veronica Leal comes in at the finish in 40:06:58 and is currently second. Almost 2 minutes down on Van Dijk.

 Now Mexican Giuseppina Grassi is off the ramp... Grassi was fifth in the RR at the Pan Am Games and was the best in the time trial at the games.

Klemencic comes in with 39:53 and is currently second  at 1:43.

Here comes Eneritz Iturriagaechevarria. Her time at the finish 39:10.62. Second currently at 1.00 of Van Dijk.

Debora Galvez of Spain is off the ramp already as Irish Olivia Dillon starts now. She was second at the Irish Nationals (RR) and was the best in the ITT at the nationals.

Debora Galvez is the sister of Isaac Galvez who died a while ago after an accident in the Gent Six Day.

 1450 CEST - Swiss home rider Pascale Schnider is off the ramp. Schnider is riding for the Cervelo TestTeam. Schnider was 7th in the Chrono Champenois, first with Cervelo in the TTT of the Blauwe Stad in The Netherlands and 3rd at the Swiss ITT Nationals.

 Here comes O'Donnell on top of the climb after about 6 km. 24 seconds down on Van Dijk.

Jessica Phillips at the finish line now. Her time is 37:37.52 - The new best time. 32 seconds faster than Van Dijk. As you can see you can make up a lot of time in the second lap.

1455 CEST - After block 1 the current top 3 at the finish is:
1. Phillips
2. Van Dijk
3. Iturriagaechevarria

Polona Batagelj of Slovenia is off the ramp. The final rider of the second block. That means Julie Beveridge and Kathryne Bertine are on the course too. Giuseppina Grassi is 32 seconds down on Van Dijk after 6 km.

Block 3 starts at 15:20 Local time. that's in 25 minutes. Olivia Dillon on top of the climb after 6 km. over 30 seconds down on Van Dijk who still has the best time there. Phillips second but made up a lot of time in the second part of the last lap

Pascale Schnider on top of the climb at km 6. In a time of 8:49. 24 seconds down on Van Dijk.

 Here comes O'Donnell at the finish passage with one lap to go. Her time 19:08 a current 3rd time at 34 seconds of Van Dijk. But still playable as you saw that Phillips made up over 40 seconds on Van Dijk in the final lap.

Next one at the finish line with one lap to go is Houvenaghel. The winner of the Chrono Champenois clocks a time of 19:03. 3rd best time. It looks like Phillips is going to be still the number one after 20 riders

1508 CEST -  Julie Beveridge is going well 2 seconds behind Phillips according to the GPS system of the Swiss. Dillon at the finish passage in 19:52 a currently 12th position.  Schnider 7th for the moment at the finish passage.

The next one to come is Julie Beveridge. The fourth of the Cascade Classic. Here she comes. Her time 18:52.55. 18 seconds down on Van Dijk and 10 seconds down on Phillips. 3rd for the moment. With a good final lap. Beveridge can beat Phillips her best time. We will see.

1514 CEST - Wendy Houvenaghel on top of the climb in the final lap. 28:20 and 40 seconds down on Van Dijk. Here comes Grassi on the climb. 7th best time thus far at 1:26 of Van Dijk.

At the finish still no change with Phillips, Van Dijk and Iturriaga in the hot seats. The hot seats is the area near the stage where the current top 3 have to sit and wait.

1522 CEST - Here comes Pascale Schnider on top of the climb in the final lap. 1:15 down on Van Dijk. 7th for the moment. Beveridge on the climb too. They didn't show her time but it was really fast. Here comes O'Donnell at the finish. Her final time is 38:30.42/ 52 seconds down on Phillips. 3rd time.

The third block just started with Chanpeng Nontasin from Thailand. She was resp. 4th (RR) and 2nd (ITT) at the Asian Cycling Games. Italian Tatiana Guderzo off the ramp now. Guderzo is the vice Olympic Champion in the road race and she won the queens stage in the Giro della Toscana on top of the Volterra last week.

1525 CEST - Great Britain's Wendy Houvenaghel comes in at 38:49.04. 1:11 down on Phillips. 4th best time.

The winner of the recent Giro della Toscana Diana Ziliute is off the ramp. She is the current National ITT Champion of Lithuania. Ziliute is 33 years old; besides winning the Giro della Toscana she was also the best in the Trophee D'or stage race in which she won a stage too. She also won a stage in the Route de France and was second in the national road race after Rasa Leleivyte

Australian Vicki Whitelaw is off the ramp. Now the lovely Swe Emilia Fahlin (Columbia-HTC) is off the ramp. Fahlin is the current Swedish ITT Champion and the second of the European Championships. There she was beaten by Van Dijk.

Irish ITT Champion Olivia Dillon comes in at the finish. Her time 40:09.79. 11th for the moment. Waiting for Julie Beveridge
Beveridge catches Schnider. In the final km now.

1530 CEST - Canadian Julie Beveridge comes in.........her time: 38:00.99. The second best time at 23 seconds of Phillips
