2009 Tour of Missouri - Stage 7
Stage 7 finish a in Kansas City a Canadian Affair - Martin Gilbert and Andrew Pinfold best Norwegian Thunder Thor Hushovd. Dave 'Z-man' Zabriskie defends yellow jersey to win 2009 Tour

Steve Bauer's Planet Energy sprinter Martin Gilbert raised his arms in victory as the Quebecois bested his compatriot from the Northwest Andrew Pinfold who took second with points leader Thor Hushvod of Cervélo TestTeam third. on the line.

USA time trial champion David Zabriskie and the Argyle team fought a brilliant battle to control the stage for a sprint finish to defend his race lead that he took in the time trial on stage 5.

Saxo Bank's Gustav Larsson finished second overall, 30 seconds back, and Team Columbia/HTC's Marco Pinotti, who began the day in fourth overall, moved up to third at 41 seconds back after taking a time bonus to push Tom Zirbel into 4th.

The stage in Kansas City Missouri was contested on a 10.2 hilly circuit, which the riders had 7 laps for a total of 72 miles. The day got off to a fast start with attacks flying off the front and Garmin/Slipstream chasing each to the ground like a pack of Argyle clad hounds. The race started under sunny skies and hot conditions but it would only get hotter for the Garmin guys as the attacks seemed non stop.

Through the first intermediate sprint Marco Pinotti struck and gained the time bonus needed to move up and over Tom Zirbel to take the third step on the podium. George Hincapie and Ben Jacques-Maynes pf Bissell followed.

Saxo Bank's Lars Bak was able to get a gap 24 miles in to the race and was joined by Jelly Belly's Will Routley. shortly after Darren Lill (OUCH/Maxxis) Sstana's Swiss man Steve Morabito and BMC's Frank Matthias joined the adventure.  The quintet was out to cherry pick the KOM points and  Bak took  the max points on the first climb; but Moises Aldape bridged on the second to take the max points and put a lock on the jersey. The six riders were swept up shortly after.

With 32 miles to go and escape of three riders opened a gap,  entering three laps to go Saxo Banks Nicki Sörensen, Gregory Rast of Astana) and Type 1'd Chris Jones were joined by Saxo Bank duo Christian Sorensen and Jason McCartney. The sextet had a tenuous hold on ten seconds as Dave Zabriskie pulled the peloton around like he was leading a team time trial.

Columbia/HTC's Canadian Michael Barry was the next to jump the Argyles and bridge to the six. Flying through the 4th KOM  Barry led with three Saxo's on his wheel: McCartney, Sorensen and Sorensen... Chris and Nicki, that is. Briefly they rant their gap to 25seconds but it was a short

With the final lap closing in the break of seven began to falter as Garmin/Slipstream brought the pot to boil. Upfront McCartney and Barry attacked the break - Sorensen and Sorensen filed suit responding to the attack. Behind Routley and Hincapie exploded out of the pack... However,  Teams Cervélo and Columbia/HTC decided it was time to bring it all back and line it up a sprint final and threw their considerable muscle on the front to help Garmin.  One last flyer tith 3 miles to go was taken by Mick Rogers of Columbia playing the advance man , flying the teams flag at ten seconds in front of the peloton before falling back to rejoin before the sprint.

The peloton arrived en masse for the sprint when the Canadian Fast men lit up the fight for the line with Gilbert taking the days trophy, flowers and kisses as for the first Canadian and rider across the line.

OUCH Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis
Andrew Pinfold of the OUCH Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis took a very close 2nd in the final sprint of the final stage of the Tour of Missouri To Martin Gilbert (Planet Energy).

Pinfold was put into perfect position by teammate Karl Menzies inside the final kilometer, and they both benefited from an attack by Tim Johnson with 3 km to go which kept the pace high.

Once Johnson was caught, Mick Rogers (Columbia-HTC) also had a go. “It was hard racing,” Pinfold noted.

Coming into the final kilometer, Cervelo Test Team took over the front to bring back Rogers and set up 2009 Tour de France Green Jersey winner Thor Hushovd for the sprint.

But with 500 meters to go, “Menzies came over the top of the Cervelo train and dropped me off on Thor’s wheel,” Pinfold said. “I was able to come around Thor. Then it was a drag race with Gilbert to the line. He started his sprint a bit earlier than I did. It came down to a bike throw.

“We were close a few times this week,” Pinfold said. “Today was a bit bittersweet. It would’ve been great to get the win for the team, but it was still good to get the result at the end.”

Pinfold’s trip to the podium wrapped up a solid week of racing by OUCH Presented by Maxxis. The team put U.S. Criterium Champion John Murphy in the top 10 of a couple stages, and Brad White got to the podium on Stage 4 by virtue of earning Most Aggressive Rider for the stage. And Rory Sutherland parlayed a strong 10th place in the Stage 5 individual time trial to finish the Tour in 10th overall.

“The guys raced well all week,” said team director Sportif Mike Tamayo. “Sometimes those efforts don’t always show up on the results sheet. But we were active in every stage, Murphy was sprinting well and Karl and Pinner did a great job of finishing things off today on a high note.”

Team Type 1 - Moises Aldape KOM
Moises Aldape helped Team Type 1 stamp its authority on the Tour of Missouri Sunday by winning the Michelob Ultra King of the Mountains title.

The Mexican’s victory in the special classification capped a week that also saw Team Type 1 figure in every major breakaway and earn the Drury Hotels Most Aggressive Rider jersey on the second stage of the seven-day, 600-mile (965 km) race.

Team Type 1 Founder Phil Southerland said it was inspiring to watch the team whose stated mission is to inspire people around the world affected by diabetes accomplish so much against world-class competition.

“Seeing the entire team and Fabio (Calabria) rally around a common goal to get the jersey was phenomenal for Team Type 1,” Southerland said. “Having Moises on the podium every day and being in all the breakaways brought a whole new level of exposure to Team Type 1 through pro cycling.”

Calabria, a 22-year-old Australian who has had Type 1 diabetes the past nine years, became the first rider with Type 1 diabetes to finish the Tour of Missouri in its three-year history. He placed 81st, 7:18 behind overall winner David Zabriskie (Team Garmin-Slipstream). All eight riders from Team Type 1 finished Sunday’s 71-mile (114 km) stage that was won by Martin Gilbert (Planet Energy).

Aldape received some valuable assistance from his teammates to secure the King of the Mountain (KOM) crown. Darren Lill integrated himself into an early three-man breakaway to take third place on the first sprint while Aldape was fourth, and teammate Matt Wilson fifth.

On the second sprint of the race, Lill was right behind Aldape to take points away from Chris Anker Sorensen (Team Saxo Bank), who wound up second in the final KOM standings. Team Type 1’s Chris Jones then sealed the jersey for Aldape by winning the third sprint ahead of Sorensen.

Aldape smiled when he was asked whether the large contingent of Hispanic fans congregating on the city’s West End district inspired him. A large Mexican flag was also on display at one of the two KOM sprint lines.

“It was very good,” he said. “The first day of this race we attacked to get the jersey and from then on, we did everything we could to hang onto it.”

Aldape’s King of the Mountain crown is the ninth in Team Type 1 history and the fifth this season. The others this year were won by: Matt Wilson (Tour of Ireland), Darren Lill (Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah), Shawn Milne (San Dimas Stage Race) and Jesse Anthony (Tour de Taiwan).
