KBS’ Jake Keough Takes USA Crits Series Lead
Keough Picks up Points, Moves to First Place; Leads in U23 Category Too

Kelly Benefit Strategies’ Jake Keough took the lead in the ongoing USA Crits Series this past weekend. After finishing sixth in the Chris Thater Memorial Criterium in Binghampton, NY, Sunday, he gained enough points to move into first place in the series, and also continues to lead in the U23 category.

“We planned that Jake would focus on criteriums for the 2009 season,” says Jonas Carney, Performance Director, Kelly Benefit Strategies. “That’s been going very well, with Jake climbing podiums at some of the biggest criteriums in the country. He’s a very consistent rider and we can always count on him to contest in the field sprints.”

KBS goes into the last two events of the series with the leader’s jersey and heads next to the TX Tough Grand Prix in Victory Park, Dallas, TX, September 17, a week ahead of the USA Crits Finals at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Las Vegas, NV, September 24.

“Winning the USA Crits series was not something we were focused on at the start of the season” adds Carney. “But with only two races to go, we definitely hope to keep the jersey. We pride ourselves on being a team that can win any kind of race, from flat technical criteriums to road and stages races with huge climbs.”

TX TOUGH is a three-stage, pledge-based fundraiser event created exclusively to raise money for Children’s Medical Center Dallas and takes place in Victory Park, Dallas, TX. The USA Crits Finals event in Las Vegas is twilight Criterium during Interbike week, the country’s largest concentration of cycling related business in the United States.

The Kelly Benefit Strategies program goes on from Greenville, South Carolina to compete in the Tour of Missouri and the Univest Grand Prix in September.

KBS Creates Green Streak at USPRO TT and Road Race
Kelly Benefit Strategies Take Three of Top Ten Places in Biggest One-Day Race in U.S.

The strongest squad ever fielded for the USPRO Time Trial and Road Race Championships by the Kelly Benefit Strategies pro cycling team brought a blur of green over the line at Greenville, South Carolina this past weekend.

In the time trial Saturday, Scott Zwizanski and Reid Mumford took 3rd and fourth place respectively while their teammates Andrew Bajadali (2nd), Matt Busche (5th), Dan Bowman (9th) and Neil Shirley (11th) took four of the top twenty slots in what has become the biggest one day race in the United States.

“Everyone on our squad believed our team could win this race and sacrificed 100 percent for the team,” says Jonas Carney, Performance Director, Kelly Benefit Strategies. “Of course it’s a little disappointing to miss the win but this performance says a lot about our program and our riders – all of it good. You can't fake it in a race of this caliber with this kind of competition.”

In the Road Race, everything went according to plan, with Zwizanski, Mumford and Hoag keeping the pressure of the squad’s climbers and Alex Candelario for the first part of the race. KBS kept the breaks in check to prevent the squad’s key riders from expending too much energy too soon and then placed two riders in the break and two in the chase group.

“When it came down to it, Hincapie had an incredible day and we just could not beat him,” adds Carney. “That’s bike racing.”

The USPRO Time Trial and Road Race Championships took place in Greenville, South Carolina, August 29-30. Top professionals from around the country attended with individuals competing in the 20.7 Professional Individual Time Trial Championship Saturday morning, plus more than 100 registered entrants for the 110-mile USA Professional Road Race Championships on Sunday morning. 2009 marked the 25th anniversary of the one-day championship event.

The Kelly Benefit Strategies program goes on from Greenville, South Carolina to compete in the Tour of Missouri and the Univest Grand Prix in September.

OUCH Pro Cycling Team At USPRO
McCarty 6th in U.S. Pro road race

Pat McCarty of the OUCH Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis jumped in the decisive break in the closing circuits in of the U.S. Pro Road Race in Greenville and finished 6th in the race behind George Hincapie (Columbia-HTC), who took the third national championship of his career.

McCarty was part of a lead group of seven riders that formed mid-way through the second of three 4.2-mile laps in Greenville, that included Hincapie as well as Jeff Louder (BMC).

“Pat tried several attacks in the closing kilometers,” said team directeur sportif Mike Tamayo. “He knew that both Hincapie and Louder were pretty strong finishers and he was trying to keep the race from coming down to a sprint.”

Each time he attacked, the group succeeded in shutting him down. Louder countered one of his last attacks and stayed away solo until the last few hundred meters when he was overtaken by Hincapie, who was racing in his home town.

White carries good form out of Utah
OUCH Presented by Maxxis was active throughout the race, with Roman Kilun getting in one of the early breaks that stayed away for quite some time before the half-way point of the 177km race.

Brad White, carrying great form coming out of the Tour of Utah, was also in the mix the final time up Paris Mountain and coming into the closing circuits. He was in the second group on the road coming into Greenville off of Paris Mountain. His group merged with the front group of nine riders and at one point, on the first of the three short laps in Greenville, he was off the front with Hincapie and Phil Zajicek (Fly V).

On the second lap, the front of the field re-shuffled and McCarty found himself up in the front group battling for the stars and stripes jersey, in a bid to give OUCH Presented by Maxxis its second national champion this year, with John Murphy already having won the criterium championship two weeks ago.

Chodroff posts top-10 in Time trial
ChodroffRacing in his first U.S. Pro Time Trial Championship, Jonathan Chodroff of OUCH Presented by Maxxis posted a solid 8th place, finishing 3:07 behind David Zabriskie (Garmin), who won his fourth consecutive time trial national championship.

The 2008 elite time trial champion was the seventh rider to start the TT and for a short while held the fastest time. His teammates Roman Kilun and Chris Baldwin also put in good rides, finishing 13th and 14th respectively.

World-Famous Artist Leroy Neiman Donates Art to
Kimberlee's Bikes for Kids Bike Art Spectacular

Leroy Neiman has painted Superbowls, the Kentucky Derby, the Masters golf tournament, untold celebrities and even bicycle racing. And he is becoming part of Kimberlee's Bikes for Kids Bike Art Spectacular with his donation of "Indoor Cycling", a piece he painted in 1979 that shows two racers executing an exchange during a Madison race on a velodrome.

"My earliest memory of bicycle racing was Reggie McNamara, a six-day bike racing champion when I was a kid, in the '30s," says Mr. Neiman. "He was a hero. Reggie McNamara was right up there with Babe Ruth and Jack Demsey and those kind of people in that great period of early sports."

Mr. Neiman has also painted numerous cycling luminaries including Jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault and Greg LeMond. "I've got drawings from bicycle racing at the Olympics, the Tour de France. It's a great sport and it's very visual."

His Indoor Cycling print is a signed and numbered serigraph (#106 of a print run of 300), which carries a retail value of $2,400. It will be one of dozens of paintings that have been donated to the Bike Art Spectacular taking place November 7 in San Diego at the Quilt Art Vision Gallery in Liberty Station. The event will benefit Kimberlee's Bikes for Kids, a 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation that buys new bikes, helmets and locks for underprivileged children.

"It can't get much better than receiving art from Leroy Neiman," says Dan Gindling, president of Kimberlee's Bikes for Kids. "Mr. Neiman's art is collected by some of the most famous people in the world, so to have one of his prints to sell at the Bike Art Spectacular is a real honor."

The Bike Art Spectacular will feature bicycle-themed art from all over the world. The art will be displayed and sold at the reception on November 7th. In addition, the reception will include a silent auction, door prizes, drinks and appetizers. Remaining art not sold at the reception will be featured in a special eBay auction from November 9-16.

The donated art boasts original paintings, limited-edition prints, hand-embellished giclee's, sculptures, photographs, recycled art, T-shirts, jewelry and cards which carry retail values from $5 to $5,000.

For those artists wishing to donate to the Kimberlee's Bikes for Kids Bike Art Spectacular, please e-mail dan@kimsbikes.org or call (619) 692-1313 for details.

About Kimberlee's Bikes for Kids - Established to honor Kimberlee Caledonia, a talented and avid cyclist from San Diego who died of brain cancer in 2008, Kimberlee's Bikes for Kids distributes free bicycles, helmets and locks to underprivileged 1st - 3rd graders. In 2010 the foundation will distribute bikes, helmets and locks to children in San Diego, Lousiville, Indianapolis and Boston. Bill Woodul Race Mechanic Clinic
Registration open for 2009

Registration is now open for the 2009 USA Cycling Bill Woodul Race Mechanic Clinic. Slated for December 10-13, 2009 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, the clinic is open to U.S. residents and USA Cycling license holders who have at least two years of bicycle mechanic experience and wish to become USA Cycling-licensed mechanics.

Participants will have the opportunity to receive hands-on experience, network with other mechanics, and learn from bicycling industry experts including frame builders, tool builders, and veterans of past Olympic Games and World Championships. Graduates of the clinic will be eligible to purchase a USA Cycling mechanic’s license and will be added to a national database of mechanics.

Bill Woodul held the first USA Cycling mechanic’s clinic in 1988 as a way to recruit mechanics for his program, and past graduates of the clinic have gone on to work for teams all over the world. Earning a USA Cycling mechanic’s license can open new doors for mechanics, qualifying them to work at Olympic Trials, National Championships, and USA Cycling Training Camps. Many corporate neutral support systems also require the license. Additionally, the license provides mechanics with insurance coverage during their participation at sanctioned events.

Space in the USA Cycling Bill Woodul Race Mechanic Clinic is limited to 50 participants to ensure one-on-one interaction between instructors and students. The registration fee is $300 and covers housing at the Olympic Training Center, meals, and learning materials.

All registration materials are due by November 16, 2009. For more information, email USA Cycling Operations Manager James Stanfill or call him at (719) 434-4228. More info.

Team Garmin-Slipstream Signs POM
Garmin athletes to be fueled by POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice in 2010

POM Wonderful, the largest U.S. grower of Wonderful variety pomegranates and maker of 100% pomegranate juice, today announced its sponsorship of Team Garmin-Slipstream, the American professional cycling team dedicated to ethical sporting and developing the next generation of cycling champions. The announcement comes on the heels of the team’s outstanding Tour de France performance, where it was second overall with riders Bradley Wiggins and Christian Vande Velde finishing in the top ten, and at the start of the Vuelta, its third Grand Tour of the season.

As part of the sponsorship, POM Wonderful will provide the riders for Team Garmin-Slipstream with the antioxidant power of POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice and POMx, the antioxidant super-extract. In addition, POM Wonderful and Team Garmin-Slipstream will partner to pursue ground-breaking sports physiology research on the health benefits of POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice as it pertains to recovery, combating oxidative stress and inflammation in an intense athletic context.

“We are excited to be partnering with one of cycling’s premier teams, especially one that is so preeminent in achieving its extraordinary accomplishments through nutritious and natural products,” said Matt Tupper, President of POM Wonderful. “We understand how important recovery is to these elite athletes and we look forward to exploring the benefits of POM Wonderful in partnership with Team Garmin-Slipstream.”

POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice has been shown to be a superior source of polyphenol antioxidants. According to a study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, POM demonstrated the most complete free radical scavenging activity, greater protection of LDL-cholesterol from oxidation, and the highest polyphenol content compared to other healthy beverages including red wine and Concord grape, acai and blueberry juices. In 1998, POM Wonderful initiated research to understand the health benefits of the Wonderful variety of pomegranate. Primary areas of research include the prostate and cardiovascular system.

“We are thrilled to partner with POM. Our team is dedicated to providing our athletes with the best possible tools available, and POM is among them,” said Jonathan Vaughters, CEO of Slipstream Sports, LLC, the sports management company that runs the team. “POM’s commitment to nutrition excellence mirrors our own, so the partnership is a natural fit.”
