Garmin's Tyler Farrar was the fastest of the fast legs at the finish of the 216 kilometer German Classic this afternoon besting Sax Bank's Dane Matti Breschel and Milram's Gerald Ciolek when it came down to a bunch sprint after a long and fast day on the circuits around Hamburg.  In a battle of the Younger sprinters a happy 25 year old Farrar leading by a bike length, raised his hands to celebrate the win over his rivals Breschel (25) and Milram's 23 year old sprinter Gerald Ciolek.

Australian Alan Davis of Quick Step and Euskaltel Euskadi's Koldo Fernandez filled out the top five.

The mountains classification was taken by Saxo Bank's Matti Breschel. top rider on the results tied with Philipe Gilbert (Quick Step) and Yuriy Krivtsov (Ag2r la Mondiale) each taking the max points over the 3rd category climb of the Waseberg.

Two riders animated the race Spaniard Sergio de Lis of Euskaltel/Euskadi and Ukrainian Yuriy Krivtsov of Ag2r la Mondiale  were the first successful of the attacks of the day. The duo built up a lead of up to nine minutes, with Team Milram and Columbia-HTC setting the pace at the front of the peloton.

With 80 km to go the two teams started turning the screws on the duo up front, taking all but 2:20 controlled as they crossed the finishline in downtown Hamburg and started the final finishing circuits.  At the first crossing of the finish line in downtown Hamburg about 60km before the finale, the escapee's gap had shrunk to about two minutes.

The Spanish-Ukranian alliance  bravely resisted the chase; but after Saxo Bank and then Liquigas threw riders to the front the gap was cut ot 30 seconds. After over 170 kilometers with their heads in the wind the pair were caught and the favorites and classics men started their assault trying to escape the peloton in the final 33 kilometers for victory.

Philippe Gilbert (Silence/Lotto) was the first to take a flyer  that opened the battle on the final circuits. He was joined by Rabobank's Nik Nuyens the two were soon out of sight of the bunch opening up a 29 second gap with Gilbert driving the break in the main. Liquigas, Ag2r la Mondiale and Saxo Bank moved to the front and the race took a jump in pace with Fabian Cancellara taking a long pull on the front that stretched the group out to the breaking point; O'Grady followed with more of the same.

Gilbert an Nuyens resisted as their gap fell. Astana moved to the front attentive, but too late as Cancellara launched up the right side of the group taking 20 meters in short order followed by Lampre's Manuele Mori, Daniele Bennati of Liquigas and two other riders, Yoann Offredo (Francaise des Jeux)  and Nicolas Roche of Ag2r. The quintet were carried ahead on Cancellara's wheel and soon had a 25 second gap. Quick Step responded with four riders on the front with Milram rejoining the front to help chase.

Quick steps Chavanel came to the front and led a scorching pace as the peloton split behind him on the climb of the a lead group of about 25 on the hunt for the 5 leaders. The five are caught with 17km to go. Sneak attack by Sébastien  Turgot, (Bbox Bouygues Telecom) comes next up the right side of the road as the first small climb starts... Chavanel jumps and joined him 100 meters up the road.

Behind, the peloton's chase goes into a confusion without a leader when Chava went up the road. The duo uses the lack of unity to expand their gap. Behind a crash of 5 riders happened as riders are forced into and over the left curb on a narrow road. All are up and racing back to the group. The lead group of thirty chase as the second group closes in on gruppo. Liquigas and Milram move to the front and orgnise the chase. Garmin and Columbia move upwith Silence/Lotto and Quickstep getting into position.

With 5 km to go the riders are all back together - Liquigas and Milram lead the peloton, escapes arre tried but none prosper. The riders enter the last 2 kilometers and 7 riders go down in the middle of the pack. Garmin's Maskant is one of them.

Saxo Bank takes the lead with Cancellara leading into the final kilometer with Columbia, Liquigas and Garmin trying to gain control. Cancellara drives the leading edge with O'Grady on his wheel and Breschel in two. Cancellara pulled off and O'Grady delivered Breschel to 150 meters but matching him on the outside is Tyler Farrar with Gerald Ciolek on the left.

Farrar drove up the center to take the win by a bike length over Breschel with Ciolek close at the line.

Matti Breschel Comments... “Actually, my legs felt a little heavy early in the race where two riders took off and created a gap and when Columbia went to the front of the peloton to control the pace my legs gradually felt better. Towards the end of the course I launched an attack but since no one wanted to follow I let myself drop back so I would be ready for the sprint.

Frank Høj, Fabian and Stuart did an awful lot of hard work put me in a good position, but Farrar was really strong in the sprint and he has really deserved the victory after several podium places lately.  The outcome was to me better than expected, so I am quite satisfied. I am now looking forward to Tour of Ireland which route in many ways looks promising to me and even later on I'm thrilled to be riding the Vuelta again”, said a delighted Matti Breschel after the race.

Gerald Ciolek after race comments...  "That is a very good success for our Milram team. On one hand, of course, there were two riders faster than me. But on the other hand, it not really a loss. That was my only my second race since the Tour de France. At times it was very difficult for me to go with the high tempo in the finale.“ It was the second podium place for him in the German ProTour race, after finishing third in 2007.

Team Milram Manager Gerry van Gerwen was satisfied, "Of course we would liked to have won here in the home area of our main sponsor. Our young team put in a super performance in this top classic and with the third place brought in an outstanding result. Our sport director Christian Henn worked the guys out tactically perfectly. The manner in which this success came to be gives us hope for the immediate future."
