Stage 7: Bairnsdale Criterium (33km)
Jack Bobridge gets timely win after his work for Howard in the early morning criterium. After numerous second places, Fly V Australia get their first win through Scott Davis.
Jack Bobridge (Jayco AIS) sealed an important victory in the criterium overpowering fellow break companion David Pell (Savings & Loans) with Cody Stevenson (Budget Forklifts) leading home the chase pack.
With Brett Tivers (OEX – Team Enterprises) and Malcolm Rudolph (Budget Forklifts) engaged in a tight battle for the sprint jersey with five points separating them, all eyes were on the talented duo early on in the criterium. Fly V Australia’s David Kemp took maximum points after lap six with Leigh Howard taking second. At the conclusion of lap eight, there was still no sign of the duo as Drapac Porsche’s Daniel Braunsteins crossed the line first with Kemp and Howard in the minor placings.
Finally, at the conclusion of lap ten, the leaders in the sprint competition came to the fore. Rudolph got the better of his rival taking the three points with team mate Michael England in second and Tivers third. From there, the duo wouldn’t feature again as a break was off the front featuring Jack Bobridge and David Pell.
Bobridge showed his sprinting prowess taking the sprint at the conclusion of lap 12 from Pell and Jason Rigg (Praties Cycling). Lap 14 showed no troubles for Bobridge as he again took the three points from Chris Pryor (Fly V Australia) and England. Lap 16, Pell made up for missing Lap 12 heading to the line first over Bobridge and Pryor. Lap 18 and 20 was a similar result with Pell winning both from Bobridge and England. Lap 22, 24 and 26 Pell won ahead of Bobridge with Kemp, Davis and Brooks taking third place respectively.
The duo at one stage had a lead of over a minute but on the final lap, Bobridge showed his class powering away from his break companion taking the win. Leigh Howard kept his overall lead whilst Rudolph got a 7 point advantage over his nearest competitor which gives him a huge chance of winning the sprint classification.

Stage 8: Bairnsdale - Lakes Entrance 76.8km
Scott Davis (Fly V Australia) secured a tough and gutsy win on the road to Lakes Entrance attacking his breakaway companions on the last climb to ride to an emphatic victory giving Fly V Australia an awesome result at the start of the Australian season.
The stage was always going to be tough for the peloton. With six Category four climbs, the stage was set for a battle for the King of the Mountain jersey which was on the back of Cameron Jennings (Budget Forklifts). With a twelve point advantage over Fly V Australia’s Hayden Brooks and Savings & Loans Timothy Roe, the jersey was not yet sealed, but after the first two climbs, Jennings showed excellent climbing ability to seal the competition winning the first two climbs with Brooks taking second on both occasions with England and Michael Stallard (Savings & Loans) taking the minor placings respectively.
The third climb, Cameron Hughes (Budget Forklifts) crossed over first with Harry Rassie (Dixon Homes Cycling) and Brendan Brooks (Shortis Cyclcle & Tri-Avanti) taking second and third. On the fourth climb, Elliot Crowther (OEX – Team Enterprise) took the win with Stallard and Davis filling out the minor places.
It was the same story on the fifth climb with Crowther sealing the victory again ahead of Andrew Roe (Team Skins) and Scott Davis (Fly V Australia). From there, the winning break was formed with six riders and when the last climb came around, Roe took the victory from Davis and Brooks.
In regards to the sprint classification, Brett Tivers, who was in second place, seven points behind Rudolph didn’t start the stage meaning David Pell was Rudolph’s main challenger who also was seven points behind. With only two intermediate sprints on the stage, it was left for the other riders to claim some fame. Samuel Witmitz (Titans-Race) took the first over Rhys Gillett (Cycle City) and Damien Turner (Total Rush). The second sprint, Adam Semple (Jayco AIS) won ahead of Steven Robb (Savings & Loans) and Ben Mather (Praties Cycling). This ensured that with a seven point lead heading into the final stage, a criterium in Paynesville, Pell would find it hard overpowering Rudolph.
The stage however belonged to Scott Davis. With Davis winning the stage and David Kemp in second position behind Leigh Howard and leading the teams classification, Fly V Australia has made an important start to their Australian campaign. Leigh Howard (Jayco AIS) remains 24 seconds clear over Kemp with Hayden Brooks and Timothy Roe battling for third place, 55 seconds behind.
Davis said, “I got away with 6 others at about 15 k to go. A few kilometers later I hit them at the bottom of that hill and at the top with about 4 k to go there were three of us left. I was lucky enough to soften the other two up and ride to the finish solo.”
