Stage 1: Hirtshals - Rebild (175km)
Matti Breschel takes action packed opening stage to lead the Tour of Denmark!
It was fitting that a Danish rider won the first stage of the Tour of Denmark. Matti Breschel (Team Saxo Bank) outsprinted rivals Simon Gerrans (Cervelo Test Team) and Martin Pederson (Capinordic).
The 175km stage started with a successful attack with five riders jumping the peloton early on. Jeremy Hunt (Cervelo), Jacob Nielsen Larsen (Glud & Marstrand Horsens), Thijs van Amerongen (Vacansoleil), Rene Weissinger (Vorarlberg-Corratec) and Nicolaj Olesen (Vesthimmerland) had over a five minute advantage on the peloton at one point.
The break didn’t last that long as they were caught on the first of three 13km closing circuits by a Saxo Bank and Capinordic led peloton. On the second circuit, Jakob Fuglsang (Saxo Bank), Enrico Rossi (Cermica), Federico Canutti (CSF Group-Navigare) and Dominique Rollin (Cervelo) tried to break clear of the peloton.
With 10km remaining, Rollin dropped off as the trio held 30 seconds on the furious peloton. Canutti, knowing that the break might not last had one last ditch effort at victory and attacked the trio with 5km to go. Fuglsang and Rossi were caught by the peloton and the move by Canutti nearly paid off as he was absorbed in the final kilometre.
Simon Gerrans (Cervelo) and Martin Pedersen (Capinordic) counter attacked the peloton when Canutti was caught. Breschel, Denmark's Road Race Champoion used the power he possesses to come around Pedersen and Gerrans and took the uphill sprint.
For Breschel, this was his 5th win of the season following solid wins in the Tour of Luxemburg and Tour of Switzerland. He will look at perhaps adding a few more stage wins to his name before the tour concludes. He also leads the point classification.
Fellow Countryman, Allan Johansen is riding his last professional race. Look for him to perhaps hunt for a stage win. It would be a fitting send off for a champion of Denmark.
Cervelo Test Team
Close to victory
"The Team did an excellent job today," said Sports Director Marcello Albasini. We were part of all the important breakaways of the day and Simon was closet to the win. This team works great together and we will work hard in the coming days to show our strengths."
