2009 Cascade Classic - Stage 4 Women Cascade Lakes Road Race
Webcor's Evie Stevens Continues to dominate Affairs in the Oregon Classic. Amber Rais, Alison Powers and Julie Beveridge staying close.

Webcor's Evie Stevens continued her romp through the Cascade Classic winning today’s road race. The Webcor rider has now taken three of the past four stages and has all but solidified her position as the race leader going into the final two stages.

Team TIBCO offered a fight against Steven’s onslaught placing Amber Rais in second and Julie Beveridge in fourth. Time trial winner Alison Powers (Team Type 1) kept her podium ambitions close with third place.

TIBCO, however, holds six places in the top ten general classification with riders in second, fourth, sixth, ninth, tenth and twelfth. With Bend hosting the national championship race in August, Stevens is giving the women’s peloton a preview of who could step into the stars and stripes jersey. Steven's also leads the Queen of the Mountain - Climbers competition with 3 points over Alison Powers.

Colavita/Sutter Home's uber sprinter Tina Pic is in a dead heat in the sprints contest with Kristy Broun of Lip Smackers; with Gina Grain close in at 3 points on the duo... this will likely besorted out later this evening during the Criterium this evening.

women get the day off to avoid the heat and put their legs up as the fifth stage, the Dowtown Criterum, will start in Bend this evening. Flat as a pancake, four sharp corners and long straight-aways will give the sprinters another chance at victory over the mountains.

Team TIBCO Report
Rais posts strong 2nd -Team solidifies Team GC lead.

The queen stage of the Cascade Classic provided the anticipated fireworks, many of them set off by an aggressive Team TIBCO. “Our plan today was to attack and put pressure on Webcor,” team director Jeff Pierce said of the strategy to put race leader Evelyn Stevens (Webcor) in difficulty.

“We wanted to get Alison (Starnes), Jo (Kiesanowski) and Meredith (Miller) away today and make Webcor work. Some of the other teams were also going for it today, too, which was good. There was a lot of pressure on them, but give Webcor credit. They rode really well.

“We wanted Amber (Rais), Kat (Carroll) and Julie (Beveridge) to mark Stevens the last 10 miles on the climb up to Mt. Bachelor,” Pierce added. “Webcor did a good job of getting Stevens to the base of the climb and she took matters into her own hands.”

Stevens rode a hard tempo up the final climb, but Rais, riding with Alison Powers (Team Type 1), hung tough. In the end, Rais sprinted around Powers to take 2nd on the stage, just 0:12 behind Stevens. Eight seconds later, Beveridge came across the line for 4th place on the stage.

Despite all the action, Pierce noted that the riders “weren’t spread out as much at the end as we expected.”

There was still a bit of shuffling near the top of the overall standings. While Rais (1:18 back) and Beveridge (1:40 back) solidified their hold on 2nd and 4th overall respectively, Carroll, who rolled in with Kiesanowski 0:55 after Stevens, dropped from 3rd to 6th overall. Starnes put in another strong ride after taking 2nd in the time trial Thursday, especially considering she spent time in a mid-race break, finishing 1:48 behind the stage winner. However she dropped from 6th to 9th overall, while Miller is now in 10th. Kiesanowski jumped up two places to 12th overall, giving Team TIBCO six of the top 12 riders overall in the race.

“We’re still in a really good position,” Pierce said. “There are two stages left and we plan to ride hard and attack until the end. It was a really hard day today. The TT was hard yesterday and there were two hard road stages to start the race. We’ll stay aggressive during the crit and try to get some the girls away,” he continued. “Webcor has some tired riders on their team after today. We just need to keep after them.”

Team Type 1 will also be racing aggressively for Powers, who is now sitting 3rd overall, 1:39 behind Stevens, but just one second ahead of Beveridge, who also appears to be a lock for the Best Young Rider jersey. She holds a lead of 5:35 over Rebecca Much of Webcor, who will be working for Stevens the rest of the way.

Team Type 1’s Powers Climbs To Third Overall
Team Type 1 women’s Team Director Jack Seehafer told Alison Powers the climb to the Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort suited her. But Powers said she wasn’t so convinced.

"After the climb two days ago and how poorly I did in the time trial (third) Thursday, I didn’t have much confidence,” Powers said. “It’s amazing how fast you can lose your self-confidence.”

But those doubts were swept away on the ascent to the finish of the 71-mile race when Powers found herself in the final selection. By the time the race reached the parking lot of the ski resort, only race leader Evelyn Stevens (Webcor Builders) was up ahead and Powers found herself sprinting against Amber Rais (Team TIBCO) for second place.

"The final climb was perfect for me," Powers said. "It was not very steep, with a gentle grade, and those are the ones where I can do the best. What I didn’t realize was that we would ride all the way around the parking lot. I was getting quite tired at that point, so Amber was able to sit on and then sprint around me.”

The third-place finish was Powers' second straight of the six-day race and moved her into third place overall, one minute and 39 seconds behind Stevens. Rais is second overall, 18 seconds behind Stevens.

Only Saturday’s hour-long criterium and Sunday’s 52-mile Awbrey Butte Circuit Race remain in the National Racing Calendar (NRC) event. Powers aims to earn her sixth podium finish at an NRC event this season. She finished third at the Redlands Bicycle Classic, runner-up at the SRAM Tour of the Gila, first at the Joe Martin Stage Race, third at the Nature Valley Grand Prix and runner-up at the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic. Powers is the NRC women's individual points leader and Team Type 1 is No. 1 in the team competition. Powers is also the leader in the Women’s Prestige Cycling Series.
