2009 Thüringen Rundfahrt (2.1) - Stage 2

Charlotte Becker (Equipe Nürnberger) has won the second stage in the Thüringen Rundfahrt. The German, winner of the Holland Ladies Tour in 2008, was the best in a sprint with two over Italian Luisa Tamanini. Leader Marianne Vos was the best of the bunch at rank three at 46 seconds. Due to the time bonuses Luisa Tamanini is the new overall leader.

The stage was animated by a break of seven riders containing Luise Keller, Charlotte Becker, Tina Liebig, Noemi Cantele Luis Tamanini, Marieke van Wanroij and Fabiana Luperini. The break gathered a maximum lead of 3.07 before the other teams started the chase.

With 10 km to go Becker and Tamani broke clear and battled for the stage win while the others were caught by the bunch.

Team Report
Cervelo: Sarah Duster 4th in Thuringen Rundfahrt GC

Charlotte Becker (Equipe Nürnberger Versicherung) won stage 2 in the Thuringen Rundfahrt today, after breaking away from a leading group of riders 10 km from the finish. Luisa Tamanini (Team Selle Italia) nearly caught Becker in the final metres of the race to take second place. Tamanini moves into first place in the overall classification, and Cervélo TestTeam's Sarah Duster now sits in fourth.

The stage was characterized by a break of nine riders that escaped mid-way through, before the second climb of the day. After 88 km, the lead group (now only eight riders) had gained almost 3 minutes advantage on the main peloton, but the peloton was chasing hard to bring the break back. Ultimately, Tamanini and Becker were the only survivors of the break, and Marianne Vos (DSB Bank - Nederland Bloeit) won the bunch sprint for third place in the stage.

"It was a tough day," said Sports Director Phillipe Mauduit. "We went with Regina in the first breakaway with ten riders, but unfortunately this group was chased back by the peloton. Then with 40 km to go, another breakaway went without any Cervélo TestTeam members inside. It was not a strong group, so we let them go for a while. But unfortunately the Peloton was stopped at a train crossing by a barrier and when they were able to continue to ride, the breakaway had 3 minute time gap. Emilie and Pascale started to work to close the gap, as did the other teams, but we could not get closer. Then we put all the riders in front and eventually we caught nearly all the riders in the break; only two were left. Charlotte Becker won and Luisa Tamanini took the second place 30 seconds before the bunch arrived."

Tomorrow's stage takes the riders departs from and ends in Schleiz. It promises to be a tough day for the riders, with some challenging climbs included in the 130 km stage.

Selle-Italia-Ghezzi: Luisa Tamanini takes the lead in Thüringen Rundfahrt
The period of good form of Luisa Tamanini continues and, after the victory in the Mediterranean Games and the Tour of Italy in support of Fabiana Luperini, she still collects the fruits of her work. In the second stage of the Thüringen Rundfahrt the rider from Trenti was involved in a long breakaway and in the final sprint she was beaten by German Charlotte Becker; thanks to the time bonuses on the finish line and in the intermediate sprints Luisa Tamanini has managed to reach the first position in the general classification by just 2". Tomorrow she will wear the yellow jersey.

Luisa Tamanini and Charlotte Becker made the decisive attack with 10 km to go after a long escape with five other cyclists including another Selle Italia-Ghezzi rider, Fabiana Luperini. The sports director Walter Zini tells how the race went: "We have done a good race and we worked a lot in the escape because we had two riders up there. First we tried with Fabiana but they immediately closed the gap, then Luisa attacked together with the Becker and they were able to take a good advantage while the riders behind were caught by the group. Unfortunately we miss the victory but the leaders jersey is a great satisfaction. Tomorrow it will be another hard stage and we will do everything to defend our position.

Tomorrow's stage will start and end in Schleiz after 128,4 km.
