2009 Thüringen Rundfahrt (2.1) - Stage 1

From July 21 to July 26 the women gather together in Germany for one of the toughest stage races in the World next to the Giro Donne and the Tour de L'Aude namely the Thüringen Rundfahrt. The first stage Rund um Altenburg over 74 km is won by the Dutch multi-talent Marianne Vos (DSB Bank). Vos was the best of a small break, which broke clear after the final KOM sprint, over World Cup leader Emma Johansson and former Junior World Champion Rasa Leleivyte. Ellen van Dijk and Sarah Düster rounded off the top five. For Vos, who is also the first leader, it's the fourth win in four days after winning three stages in the Tour de Bretagne the past weekend.

Team Report
Cervelo: Sarah Düster third overall

Dutch rider Marianne Vos (DSB Bank - Nederland Bloeit) sprinted to a win today in the Rund um Altenburg 75.2 km stage. Second place went to Emma Johansson (Red Sun Cycling Team) and third to Rasa Leleivyte (Safi-Pasta Zara Titanedi). Sarah Düster had the best result for Cervélo TestTeam in today's stage with a fifth place finish. Sarah also won the last intermediate Sprint and earned enough bonus seconds to move into third in the GC.

"We started to race hard from the very beginning with our strong girls Pascale and Emily working very well. After 20 km Regina Bruins crashed but was able to get on the bike again and return to the peloton," said Philippe Mauduit, Sports Director. "Our tactic today was to go with Regina in the breakaway and though it did work out, the other teams pulled her back. In the last 6 km she was in the breakaway with two other girls, but unfortunately they took her back in the last corner, 200 m before the finish. Tomorrow's stage around Gera will be even tougher, I am sure."

Carla Ryan worked very hard throughout the race and finished in the bunch. "It was a tough stage with some interesting pavement sections. For me personally it was good to open the legs up after the Giro Donne. The team rode well, and Sarah will wear the Sprint jersey which wasn't planned. It was a perfect course for her and she loves this kind of racing. It is great; really good for her and the team." Asked if there was a hope that Sarah [Duster] could hold the front to the line, Ryan added, "She loves this kind of racing and gave it a try. I am really happy for her."

The 2009 edition of the Thuringen Rundfahrt Women began today in Altenburg and will cover six stages totaling approximately 600 kilometres before it finishes on Sunday in Greiz. Revolving around the various towns and small market towns of the region, the race and its six challenging stages are an annual event that is supported by these towns and in turn brings them to life.

Tomorrow's second stage departs from Gera. The 125.9 km stage also features the first climb at Kleinsaara that will certainly test the rider's mettle almost from the starter's pistol.
