2009 Giro Donne (2.1) - Stage 3

The third stage over 106,4 km from Calcinaia to the top of the Monte Serra was the first mountain stage and was won by Mara Abbott (Team Columbia). Abbott one of the best, maybe the best, climber in the women's peloton won the sprint uphill of Cervelo's Emma Pooley. German Claudia Häusler (Cervelo) finished as third at 36 seconds of Abbott. Race leader Amber Neben finished as 8th at 2.05 and lost her leaders jersey to Britain's Emma Pooley. Pooley is really in top shape after winning the Grande Boucle Feminine a few weeks ago.

The selection in the stage started at the first ascent of the Monte Serra climb. During the climb we saw an elite group in front with Fabiana Luperini (Selle Italia Ghezzi), Claudia Hausler (Cervelo Test Team), Carla Ryan (Cervelo Test Team), Svetlana Boubnenkova (Fenixs); Judith Arndt (Team Columbia), Amber Neben (Equipe Nurberger), Trixi Worrack (Equipe Nurberger), Tatiana Guderzo (Michela Fanini Record Rox), Edita Pucinskaite (Gauss RDZ), Nicole Brandli (Bigla Cycling Team), Mara Abbott (Team Columbia), Linda Villumsen (Team Columbia), Emma Pooley (Cervelo Test Team), Tatiana Antoshina (Gauss RDZ) and Susanne Ljungskog (Team Flexpoint).

After the climb we got several attacks from Abbott, Arndt, Neben, Bubnenkova, Häusler, Brändli and others but all without success. The decisive attack came on the climb of the Monte Serra from Claudia Häusler followed by Mara Abbott and Emma Pooley. In the last kilometer Häusler dropped off the break while Abbott won the sprint of Pooley for the stage win.

Team Report
Cervelo: Pooley takes lead in Giro Donne

It was a tough stage for the women of Cervélo TestTeam today, as they raced 106.4 km from Calcinaia to Monteserra, but it ended well as the team took second (Emma Pooley) and third (Claudia Hausler) in the stage, and Emma Pooley took the overall race lead.

"It was a hard race," said Sports Director Manel Lacambra. "We controlled the race for the first 60 km, and then Pooley attacked on the climb and broke away with a few others. In the decent it was slippery as it was raining. From our team Claudia, Kristin and Emma were all involved in crashes and missed the lead. Claudia and Emma were able to make it back to the lead but unfortunately Armstrong was too far back. On the final climb Pooley attacked again and got away with Hausler and Mara Abbot. It was a hectic final. The finish sprint was won by Mara Abbot ahead of Emma and Claudia. With her second place finish, Emma took also the lead in the overall ranking. Luckily all girls are fine after the crashes and we can look forward to the next stages. I am very happy about the team performances today."
