Vuelta Ciclista a Burgos - Stage 2

: Vuelta Ciclista a Burgos - Spa - cat. 2.1

Stage 2: Frías - Miranda de Ebro = 172 km

Jose Iván Gutiérrez, of iBanesto.com, stole away from the peloton to win stage two of the of the Vuelta Ciclista a Burgos, between Fri'as and Miranda de Ebro, in a time of 4 hours, 6 minutes and 35 seconds. The Italian Michele Bartoli, of the Fassa Bortolo team, continues to impress on his comeback trail - second yesterday and third today, he is the new leader of the General Classification.

The Meta Volante at Oña, after 24 kilometres of racing, was the springboard for the Austrian Gerrit Glomser (Saeco) and the Italian of the Alessio Team, Alessandro Bertolini, to launch an attack which saw them stay away from the peloton for 141 kilometres, gaining a maximum advantage of ten minutes at the 80 kilometre mark in Quintanabureba.

The Phonak team of race leader Bert Grabsch, the Phonak found itself short on allies in its efforts to chase the "foyards" down. But eventually the combination of determined team work and rising winds saw the pair of escapees brought back into the fold with just 7 kilometres to go.

With the wind now a major factor, a crash under the 5 kilometre banner saw the peloton cut in two. Race winner in 2000, Leonardo Piepoli, came off worst with a possible broken collar bone - but other victims of the crash included Mercado, Heras, and Sastre Heras ended losing 1 minute 16 seconds.

Other pre-race favourites like Francisco Mancebo (iBanesto.com), Mikel Zarrabeitia (ONCE) or Chechu Rubiera (US Postal) formed a select leading group of 16 riders who took advantage to steal away from the wind-disrupted peloton. Iván Gutiérrez, more of a time trial specialist, realising his chances in a sprint were small, wisely attacked the elite front group early. Luck favours the bold, and he kept his small advantage to the finish line, his fifth professional victory. It was also just reward for his efforts yesterday when he was in the breakaway for more than 90 kilometres...

Tomorrow's stage is the Team Time Trial over 18 kilometres between Peñaranda de Duero and Aranda de Duero.
