Stage 4: Catenoy/Nogent Sur Oise (176.7km)
Steven Van Vooren wins the overall classification as Johansen uses experience to win the stage. Unfortunately no stage victory for Drapac Porsche but consolation as Peter McDonald fights back to reclaim KOM jersey.
Heading into the final stage there were 2 questions on everyone’s lips. Would Steven Van Vooren hang onto the leaders jersey? Would Peter McDonald reclaim the KOM jersey? The answer to one of those questions came half way during the stage when McDonald secured enough points to reclaim the jersey that he lost in stage 3.
Heading into the final stage, McDonald was 8 points behind leader Jonathan Thire (Auber 93). When the first climb came, McDonald attacked and gained 4 out of a possible 7 points. Over the next climb he sealed the win.
Similarly in the overall classification, Van Vooren (An Post Sean Kelly) only had a 5 second advantage over Mederic Clain (St. Cyr Tours) and needed to stay out of trouble and make sure that Clain wouldn’t throw any surprises. His team controlled the peloton and it was hard for Clain to attack.
With 40km to go, there was an attack. A group of 15 riders and some were; Allan Johansen (Designa Kokken), Joe Lewis (Drapac Porsche), Nadir Haddou (Auber 93), Nicolas Walker (Cinelli Down Under) and Tony Gallopin (Auber 93). Drapac Porsche were looking for a stage win and Joe Lewis was their man. Joe tried to attack his breakaway companions with 10km to go and couldn’t get clear. It was at this stage that the break started losing riders and with around 5km to go there were 8 at the head of the field. Lewis again tried to attack with 2km to go, but experience prevailed today with Allan Johansen showing that he still has the legs to take stage wins by outsprinting his rivals.
This was Johansen’s second win of the season after winning stage 4 in Rhone Alps Isere back in April. He has come to Designa Kokken with the aim of helping the young riders through his experience and when he retires, he will continue working with the team.
Drapac Porsche
Peter McDonald reclaiming KOM jersey. Joe Lewis gunning for stage win.
“My season in Europe could not have started any better,” commented McDonald, referring to his two King of The Mountain wins in two starts.
“I am still chasing a stage victory,” said McDonald. “That is always my goal going into a race.”
Joe Lewis had another great day on the road finishing seventh after attacking the leading group twice in the closing stages of the race. Lewis, who finishing sixth yesterday was penalised 20 seconds for riding in the convoy for too long after receiving mechanical assistance said today’s result, is of some consolation.
“I had a go at breaking away at 10 kilometres and then again at two kilometres from the line,” said Lewis.
“It’s a little disappointing not to win but I think now I have the confidence to go to the next level. Things are looking good for the races coming up.”
The Drapac Porsche Team return to their base in Belgium for two days before returning to France on Wednesday for Le Boucles de La Mayenne. The team welcomes Gene Bates and Mark O’Brien into the line up who have just arrived in Europe. Bates and O’Brien will be joined by team captain Stuart Shaw, Joe Lewis, Dean Windsor and Peter McDonald for the four day Tour which starts in Laval on Thursday.
