Circuito Montañes (2.2) - Stage 3

Stage 3: Miengo-El Astillero (178.1km)
Jean Marc Marino keeps yellow as Engoulvent shows sprinting abilities.

Rabobank dominated stage 1 of the 2009 Ciruitco but in stages 2 and 3, French team, Besson Chaussures have put their cards on the table and today took the stage win through Jimmy Engoulvent whilst keeping the yellow jersey on the back of Jean Marc Marino.

The third stage travelled from Miengo finishing in Elastillero covering 178km and was raced in sunny conditions. After the race had begun, there were attacks left, right and centre. Bessons-Chaussures Sojasun were keeping their minds on the job closing up any attack that tried to get away. Finally there was a successful break through Raul Santamarta (Burgos Monumental) and Columbian Diego Tamayo (Camiooro A-Style).

When the first climb of the day came around, these two riders had 5 minutes on the peloton when they started the ascent up the Collada de Carmona.

The peloton were going about their business not letting the advantage get too great and began to decrease the lead ever so slightly and when the riders passed through Guarnizo, 5km from the finish the sprinters teams were getting ready to prepare for a bunch sprint. The break was caught 3km from the line and the speed was so intense that the narrow roads caused some crashes in the peloton.

In a fast sprint to the finish, Jimmy Engoulvent reigned surpreme beating Jorge Martin Montenegro (Andalucia-Cajasur) and Evgeny Popov (Katyusha) recording his 6th victory in 2009.

Twenty Six year old Jean Marc Marino retained his leaders jersey. “The day has been good” said Marino. “We have achieved the stage win with Jimmy Engoulvent my partner and I keep the yellow jersey. It is a tough race but we could control it. Jimmy is a rider who is doing very well lately and has managed to be faster, not better.”

After today, the race gets tougher with 2 critical mountain stages. “The Spanish are very good riders in the mountains and the stages are better tailored to their characteristics. Do not rule out anything and that I and my team are ready to defend. Although we know that will not be easy.”
