59th Vuelta  a Colombia 2009 - Stage 6 & Photos
The race takes a twist as the red jersey Gonzalez flats and Cafe Columbia attacks. Jose Rujano lessons the peloton on climbing and takes the lead of the race before the first rest day.

Stage 6: Santa Rosa de Cabal - Minas-Sabaneta 177.8 km

Venezuelan José Rujano (Gobernación del Zulia) is in the lead of the 59th Vuelta a Colombia after giving locals a climbing lesson in the very steeply Alto de Minas The highest Climb of the sixth stage ending in Sabaneta. With 177.8 kilometers, three Intermediate Sprints and two KOM, 2nd and hors category climbs in today's stage, another Pandora’s Box opened for an unfair misfortune for the new leader Javier Gonzalez, who by some's words, was given a dose of his own medicine when Colombia Es Pasion-Cafe de Colombia and other interested teams (From Antioquia) realized he had a flat after the 2nd category climb.

As Rujano third in the 2006 Giro d'Italia Powerfully launched his attack in Alto de Minas, Gonzalez was losing time by the minutes. Rujano arms formed the V for second in a row success for the Venezuelan team is this year edition of the Vuelta. On top of that, he is wearing the Red Pilsen Jersey and is a very serious contender for it. So 6th stage left us with mechanical issues and a life lesson for Javier Gonzalez and his director Angel Y Camargo (Loteria de Boyacá). He lost more than 9 minutes and the Red Leader's Jersey.

A new General Classification with the ' patriot' Rujano closely followed by Fredy Montaña (Boyacá es Para Vivirla) at 33 seconds. Fernando Camargo (Lotería de Boyacá) at 36 sec. Spectacular race by Montaña who was a victim of a brutal accident in Italia in 2007, which Kept him in coma and almost sentenced him to give up cycling as a pro-elite.

The stage:
The new climber test for the surviving 144 riders in the 59th Vuelta a Colombia, the 'Alto de Minas' at 2,200 meters above sea level, ending in Sabaneta (Antioquia) with a fast 12 km descent. An easy start for the peloton, like a Sunday recreational ride for them. First a break with Jairo Salas and Juan Pablo Forero (Colombia es Pasión-Café de Colombia) this showed D.S. Oliverio Cardenas seemed to be more interested in the intermediate sprints for Forero than the general classification for Duarte. Loteria del Táchira chased and caught them on behalf of Venezuelan Arthur García.

Next one to go was a 16 rider break away, in which Weimar Roldán (GW-Shimano) was the most interesting one, as he is also in contention for the intermediate sprint classification. He did win the first one, and scored second in the other two before the climbs; then he took it easy. His work was done; in fact he had overtaken Forero in the points chase for Arthur García (Lotería del Táchira).

At the start of the climbs 8'20" was the difference to the Leaders group. An illusion that just Juan Carlos Torres (Néctar de Cundinamarca) and the north American Glenn Chadwick (Rock Racing) tried to materialize. In the group everyone was heading to vanguard positions when Leader Gonzalez had a flat. Duarte opened fire taking revenge for yesterday's gesture. He might have said at the end Gonzalez losses were superior, and yes indeed they were. Belda sent 4 mates back to Gonzalez, who could not bring him back to Duarte's group. Who could have?

at the front of affairs, Venezuelan Carlos Galvis (Gobernación del Zulia) connected with Torres and Chadwick for the last 4 km of 2nd Category Alto de La Quiebra. Torres went first while the battle for the González' red jersey was now wide open considering he was already more than 3 min down on Duarte's group. Galvis countered in Alto de Minas first corners. David Martin (Rock Racing), Javier Zapata (Orgullo Paisa), Flober Peña (Alcaldía de Tunja), Víctor Niño (EBSA) and Daniel Rincón (UNE-EPM), followed his wheel, meanwhile in the favorites group a tiny blue jersey powered his bike' turbo that took him solo to Sabaneta.

Jose Rujano, Gobernación de Zulia's leader attacked Fabio Duarte, Oscar Sevilla, Santiago Botero, Mauricio Ortega and Giovanni Báez who witnessed how the 'patriot' left them rooted to the corner.

When Rujano made it to the Alto de Minas he had already taken care of the surviving 8 of 16 riders of the break.. In solo and with an easy aspect he went down to Sabaneta. Where he stopped the clock 2'43" earlier than Victor Niño.

It has been an electrifying first week of the 59th Vuelta a Colombia. Action and drama have been plenty and every day brings unexpected events.

But that is good, because the Vuelta seems to tell everyone, stay awake today it might be your day. And what a day it was today for Rujano and the whole Venezuelan delegation. Rock Racing seems also getting better as the race progresses and what to say of Botero, the way he looked on the climbs lets us predict that 'perhaps' he will be next in red after the 35 km Time Trial this Sunday in Medellin.

Saturday's rest day will give everyone time to preplan their second week and for Loteria de Boyacá a good break for deep meditation about flat's tactics.
