59th Vuelta a Colombia 2009 - Stage 5 & Photos
Race Leader Fabio Duarte loses 7 minutes - Boyaca counters taking first places
in the General Classification. Javier Gonzalez in the red lider's jersey.
Updated Report & Photos
Boyaca counters back and get two first places in the General Classification.
Duarte gone from the picture.
Yeah right!!! A "transition" stage that gave everyone a surprising end. At the
90 Km mark, when everything indicated the group was heading to Cartago for the
first massive Sprint of the Vuelta, luck played a determinant role and gave
Fabio Duarte a black birthday gift. A flat when the group was in speedy downhill
from the only hill of the day.
As per The Colombia es Pasion-Cafe de Colombia, a rocky mistake for Oliverio
Cardenas who took too much time to pull back his team. Initially Duarte was
given 2 team mates, then third one. So they were four. When the clock showed one
minute to the group, it was too late.

Boyacenses instead did not hesitate; they did not want to join the ones that
were wishing Fabio a happy birthday. Once they knew he was in trouble, Loteria
de Boyaca, and every single Boyacá’s rider alive -they should be not less than
40- moved to the front and rode a time trial, I mean a giant's time trial with
BOYACA ES PARA VIVIRLA, LOTERIA DE BOYACA, EBSA, PARA TUNJA LO MEJOR, and
ESTUDIANTES DE TUNJA. On top of that UNE-EPM joined them in the pulling, which
made things worse for Duarte.
The bad luck continued for Colombia es Pasion when Luis Felipe Laverde,
second 'cafetero' in Command, and who was hanging on the Boyacá’s group, also
had a flat.

With 15 km to go and the group flying at more than 52 Km/h, he couldn't
connect either. So the transition stage left us a new leader with a lot of time
on the one that can make minutes in the remaining mountains; Sevilla and Botero
and many more back in contention for the crown.

Stage 5: Guacari-Carretera Panorama - Cartago 146.8 km
At local 11:00 the 5th stage of the Vuelta a Colombia started. As usual in
medium size cities, under a red flag, to do the parade every one waits for by
the road. Among them hundreds, actually thousands of kids which are always allow
to watch the caravan as they get a school break. A nice excuse to miss Algebra.
On the start were missed Nelson Gelves (Gobernación del Zulia), Norberto Wilches
(Sawer) Robert Plazas ( EBSA) and Félix "The Cat" "El Gato" (Alcaldía de Tunja)
whose Giro d'Italia happened to have 37 Stages. The 36 years old veteran
Couldn't go anymore.
Red flag gone, back to business with 145 Km left, from GUACARI to CARTAGO,
going through BUGA and LA UNION All of these in the South west province Valle
del Cauca. Three Intermediate Sprints at KM, 22.1, 52.8 and 104.8 to the delight
of Arthur Garcia (Lotería del Táchira) and Juan P. Forero (Colombia es Pasión).
They are 17 points even. A single Cat 4 hill came at the 86.8 Km.

A special sprint took place in Buga, which will give Jairo Perez (Lotería de
Boyacá) a good prize($). Then a compact group for the first Intermediate Sprint:
1. Arthur García (Lotería del Táchira), 2. Juan Pablo Forero (Colombia es
Pasión-Coldeportes), 3. Carlos Ospina (GW-Shimano). So the Venezuelan added 5
(22), Forero 3 (20) and Ospina 1 (never mind) to their point pockets.
Second Intermediate Sprint, nothing really remarkable in between, Garcia
(Lot. Táchira), 2. C. Ospina (GW-Shimano). Forero gave this one up. A group of
25 breakaway -must have been a deviation on the road?- were on their way to the
only hill before Roldanillo -little Town in Valle del Cauca.
In the mini peloton: Edson Valero (Governación del Zulia), Wbeimar Roldan and
Stiber Ortiz (GW-Shimano), Víctor Orozco (Alcaldía de Armenia), Cesar Salazar
(Lot Tachira), Aldemar Herrera (Néctar de Cundinamarca), Jesus David Castaño (Orgullo
Paisa) and Álvaro Gomez (EBSA), Mayler Prada (Estudiantes de Tunja), José
Castelblanco (Néctar de Cundinamarca), Daniel Bernal (Alcaldía de Tunja),
Alejandro García (Alcaldía de Armenia), José Enrique Gutiérrez, Francisco
Mancebo and Glenn Chadwick, (Rock Racing), Víctor Becerra (Lotería), Jairo Salas
(Colombia es Pasión), Yoedison Bustamante (Lotería de Boyacá), Elder Herrera and
Juan Alejandro García (GW-Shimano), Daniel Rincón (UNE-Medellin), Julián Rodas (Orgullo
Paisa), Albeiro Sánchez (InderValle)

The presence of some serious contenders like Salazar, Mancebo, and Becerra
frustrated everyone else's work. The group started the descent of the climb all
together. Well all but the Leader who got a flat. He was given three mates to
bring him back, which was never accomplished. Loteria de Boyaca, helped by the
whole Boyacá’s delegation went on the front of the pack and made the last 50 km
a hell ride for Colombia es Pasion-Cafe de Colombia, whose coach, Oliverio
Cardenas, was in a dilemma of either leaving Duarte the whole team or hang up on
the peloton with some units.
Whatever was going on in Colombia es Pasion, it took too much time to make a
decision that needed to be... How come they did not have a spare
bike, and even better, why wasn't Duarte surrounded with his mates? Whereas the
speedy actions of an old wolf, Vicente Belda (Boyaca para Vivirla), and Angel Y.
Camargo (Loteria de Boyaca) were materialized by the lack of action. They put
the hammer down with their 53x11 gears. As other interested ones realized the
Leader's team mistake, they made sure to collaborate in speeding the multicolor
engine to Cartago.
At the front Garcia, knowing Juan P Forero was back, made his team work to
the last kilometers to get his deserved stage with almost no contention.
Everyone worked to put Duarte as far back as possible and, since Loteria helped
quite a bit that mission, Garcia was not really challenged at the finish line.

Fabio Duarte suffered the sourest day of his short carrier on his 23
birthday. Even when the whole team was driving him, the difference would grow by
the minutes. When Colombia es Pasion-Cafe de Colombia crossed the finish line
down 7'08" on Garcia he almost went on tears. And right there the debate started
among riders, coaches, and media. Everyone had something to say.
Comments were heard all the way from qualifying Loteria de Boyaca and allies
as dishonest, accused of wrong doing against a colleague, a Leader facing
misfortune. At the other end the pragmatic ones for who a mechanical is
something the teams need to be prepared for and, if they are not, it is an issue
to be taken advantage of .
Among the first, Victor Hugo Peña and Rock Racing who never pulled the group
and openly accused Boyacá’s teams of unfairly attacking Duarte and taking
cycling back 50 years... On the other hand Angel Yesid Camargo, Vicente Belda
and one who said it to media, Jair Bernal "It is about taking advantage of a
rival's weakness, it is nothing to do with playing dirty."
Well this is not new for Loteria de Boyaca. Back in 2006 they took everyone
by surprise speeding up the peloton, in Bogota's closing circuit of the 56th
Vuelta a Colombia, just when the leader, Hernan Buenahora had a flat with two
laps to go.
And yet they did it, Buenahora stepped down when he realized he would never
catch the group -all by himself - and Libardo Niño, that needed 1'30", got his
third Vuelta crown as a result. The organization wanted to sanction Buenahora
and his already reduced team, Alcaldia Cabimas. He alleged he just was not able
to move the cranks anymore.
Boyacá’s Javier Gonzalez would receive the Leader's jersey before an
astonished Duarte’s sight, who must have had the saddest birthday. He is now out
of the top 10 General Classification. Which is now shrieked like if there wasn't
any climb of of the Linea. Gonzalez (Lotería Boyacá) is followed by Freddy
Montaña (Boyacá es para Vivirla) at 53 seconds and Fernando Camargo (Lotería
Boyacá) 56".
Tomorrow, is the6th stage of the vuelta, which so far has seen plenty of
action. The second round for climbers, who have to go through the hors category
'Alto de Minas'. It offers the best scenario for those who have something to say
about today's events. How punished are Duarte's legs but mostly it is his
pride; it is has been a more than great growing experience for this young gun.
The stage will take off from Santa Rosa de Cabal, with first 115 km of up and
downs. Three Intermediate Sprints that fortunately for Garcia happen to be all
be before the mountains. A 2nd Cat in the 'Alto la Quiebra' at 132 Km. and the
hors cat 'Alto de Minas' at 156 Km. A steep descent to 178 Km in Sabaneta
(Antioquia Province).
