60th GP Llodio - Updated

Prior to the UCI World Tour's "Vuelta al Pais Vasco", set to come in early April, the Basque Country of Spain, one of the planet's main cycling-nut areas, got a first taste of top-class racing today, courtesy of the 60th Gran Premio de Llodio - Clásica de Alava, a one-day event of 164 kilometers running around the town of Llodio in the Alava/Araba province. First across the line at the end of the Laudioko Nazioarteko Sari Nagusuia (the Basque language is a little strange, isn't it?) was Beijing Olympics RR champion Samuel Sánchez of Euskaltel, who had the best legs in the three-man sprint that determined the race winner. His two victims were Fuji's David de la Fuente (2nd at the finish) and Xacobeo-Galicia's Ezequiel Mosquera (3rd) while Caisse d'Epargne's José Joaquin Rojas came in a little later to win the sprint for fourth place. Sanchez also climbed the podium as a member of the Teams classification's winning squad.

Earlier in the race, headlines were made by Rock Racing's Oscar Sevilla, that got himself into the "breakaway of the day" alongside Egoi Martínez and Aitor Hernández of "home side" Euskaltel plus Alejandro Marque Porto, a Spaniard racing with the outfit of Portugal's Palmeiras-Tavira team. Martínez, who wore the Discovery Channel jersey for some time, was first atop the Puerto de Altube climb and at Alto de Garate after 105 kilometres, Marque Porto powered to glory at the Murgia (km. 39.8), Amurrio (km. 89,4) and Llodio (km. 101.2, first passage of the line) hot spot and special sprints, with El Niño Sevilla winning the meta volante at Arrespalditza (km. 135). But the quartet couldn't put more than three minutes or so into the field, and when the chase got going, the escapees got chased down. Still, his accomplishments were good enough for Porto to win both the Hot Spot and Special Sprints titles.

Okay, it took some time for that, but it happened after they went on the mighty Alto de Malkuartu for the first time. Sevilla, Hernández and Marque Porto gave up their hopes first, while Egoi Martínez, apparently the guy with the best climbing legs in the breakaway group (his KOM classification wins at the 2006 Vuelta, 2008 Tour of the Basque Country and the recent Tirreno-Adriatico were no fluke, after all), stayed clear a little longer. But he had to wave white flag at km. 152. Nobody could take the King of the Mountains crown away from him though.

So what were the last dozen kilometers, with one more climbing of both Malkuartu and Alto de Garate, about? Well, about nothing in particular on the first ascent: only orange warrior Jorge Azanza, Caisse d'Epargne's Alberto Losada and David Herrero of the Xacobeo crew made a vain attempt to break clear on the way to success. No more than a dozen seconds they gained. No way they could succeed. So the peloton was stretched, but basically together as they came down the Malukartu. Sam Sanchez, Mosquera and De la Fuente were more successful as they tried later: the guys opened a small gap and stayed 10 seconds clear of their first nineteen pursuers with three km. to go, just to hold on to their small advantage until the final straight, when Sam found back his winning antics.
