2009 Terreno-Adriatico - Fuji-Servetto Participation
CAS finds in favor of the Fuji-Servetto team to be allowed to participate in the
"Race of Two Seas" but it is unclear if the team will be free to line up at the
start tomorrow... A perplexing turn of events as the another controversial
skirmish in the cycling wars of the past rears its head again.
Fuji/Servetto Team Statement
Laussane-based C.A.S. (Court for Arbitration Sport) has decided on behalf of the Fuji-Servetto's
participation at the races Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-San Remo for the second
time.
At about 18.00 CET, the Court for Arbitration in Sport (C.A.S.) adopted the
following provisory decision: to allow Fuji-Servetto cycling team’s
participation at the Tirreno - Adriatico and the Milan - San Remo races. The
race organizer RCS
Sport is forced to allow Fuji-Servetto’s appearance both of their races.
It’s the second time in four days in which the C.A.S. allows Fuji-Servetto to
take part in the races organized by RCS Sport. Prior to that, on March 6th, the C.A.S. had dismissed the intention
of RCS Sport on choosing the teams taking part in their races freely.
After that
dismissal, RCS Sport again claimed his right, claiming "ethical inconveniences"
as the reason for their posture in defense; however, that proposal was also denied
by the C.A.S. The Fuji-Servetto riders chosen to take part at the Tirreno –
Adriatico will take the start at the prestigious Italian stage race tomorrow,
which will finish on March 17th.
The current list of invited teams does not include Fuji-Servetto, and we will
have to see if the "allowed" to participate will be recongnized by RCS with the
team allowed to participate and line up for the start on Wednesday. Apparently
there is still the issue of how much license a race organizer has in choosing
ProTour teams in their races.
The beleaguered team rose out of the ashes of the The team is rising out of
the ashes of the doping scandals that plagued the Saunier-Duval squad; and has
been rebuilt with new sponsors and manager: Alvaro Crespi. The team as Crespi
commented earlier this year is working to rebuild its image and palmares to
attain invitations to the top competitions... “We have to give a good
image of our team right from the beginning of the season.”
