Sweden's
Thomas Lovkvist of Team Columbia-High Road powered to victory
in Saturday's
Montepaschi Strade Bianche Toscana (formerly Eroica)
contest, running over 190 kilometres - 60 of which on unpaved roads - from
Gaiole in Chianti to Siena's legendary Piazza del Campo square (home to the
famous
Palio horse race twice a year) in green Tuscany.

Team Milram's Fabian Wegmann took the runner-up spot in this Italian
one-day race and Martin Elmiger from the land of the Swiss made the
all-foreign podium complete. Giovanni Visconti was the only Italian in the top
ten spots, that featured also Team Columbia's young fastman Boasson Hagen plus
two English-speakers.
A wild bunch of 112 athletes, but NOT unfit World champion Alessandro
Ballan, showed up at the start line. Four of them - Riccardo Chiarini,
Barloworld's Diego Caccia, Ukraine's Oleksander Kvachuk and Italy's Luca
Pierfelici - made the gap at km. 28 and stayed clear until about 20 km from
the finish, gaining a maximum advantage of five minutes and 28 second by km
59.

Once they were brought back, a new part of the race began, with the
Switzerland-based Swede Lovkvist, Germany's national RR champion Wegmann and
Elmiger eventually stealing the show after Visconti made an untimely and
unsuccessful move with some 7 kilometres to go. The "Milraman" Linus Gerdemann
attacked next in last five thousand metres, but got only some brief media
exposure as the race was about to make it into Siena.
But it was Lovkvist's final attack in the closing kilometer on the streets
of Sienna that proved successful as he led over the line with 4 seconds on
Wegmann, with Elmiger a following at 2 seconds.
