Tour of Qatar 2009 - Stage 4 Report & Photos
Mark Cavendish back to his winning ways for 2009. Cervelo's Young Gun Heinrich Haussler second with race leader Tom Boonen third.

Race Patron Eddy Merckx leads the peloton out of Doha through the neutral zone to the start.

Stage 4: Doha Old Souq – Madinat Al Shamal 141km
Mark Cavendish continued Britain's dominance of the Tour of Qatar by winning Stage 4, a 141km ride from Doha Old Souq to Madinat Al Shamal. Cavendish had never ridden in the race before, and this victory has set down an earlier marker in the much anticipated battle between the Manxman and Tom Boonen in 2009.

Unlike previous days, the wind did not cause the Peloton to break up early on. Instead, a breakaway group consisting of Gatis Smukulis (Ag2r), Dominik Roels (Milram), Michael Barry (Columbia), Maarten Tjallingii (Rabobank), Rhys Pollock (Drapac), Abdelbaset Hannachi (Doha) and Skil-Shimano's David Deroo went clear, nonetheless fighting a strong crosswind.

Columbia's Michael Barry and Skil's David Deroo lead the seven adventurers.

50Km into the stage, the seven  had a lead of three minutes; this soared up to 5:30 half way into the stage. When the race direction turned into the wind, the lead evaporated at some speed. With 30km left, it was hovering around the one minute mark.

Tom Boonen & Quick Step mates at the front of affairs.

Quick Step and Cervelo - neither of whom had a rider upfront - were controlling the pace in the Peloton, who at this stage were closing in on the seven man lead group with every pedal stroke. Another change of direction bought sea winds onto the riders' left, thus breaking the main field into several smaller groups.

Cavendish, initially, was in the second group though he had several team mates working for him. One Columbia rider who wasn't there was Vicente Reynes, who along with Murilo Fischer (Liquigas) crashed onto a rocky hard shoulder. The latter was taken to hospital after making it to the finish in Madinat Al Shamal.

This wind was the final nail in the coffin for the escapees, who were reeled in with 22km remaining. Cavendish joined up with the leading group - containing Boonen, most of the Quick Step and many members of Cervelo –-with just five kilometres remaining.

Cavendish Wins, Haussler on his left second, Boonen third, and Pozzato fourth.

Boonen started the sprint for the line, though Cavendish was soon gaining on him. Heinrich Haussler posted his best finish for Cervelo, he spotted a gap and soon passed Boonen for second place. Filippo Pozzato placed in fourth.

Boonen retains the leader's Gold Jersey, with five Cervelo riders taking up the immediate placings behind the Quick Step rider. Roger Hammond at 10 seconds and Haussler at 12 seconds are the best placed of the five. The Belgian is also leading the Point classification while Haussler is the best Young rider thus far and his Cervelo team the best outfit.

Team Columbia/Highroad Comments - Cavendish Takes First Victory of the Year
Mark Cavendish captured his first victory of the 2009 season on Wednesday when he out sprinted the field on stage four of the Tour of Qatar. Cavendish took a convincing win in a stage where strong winds and splits in the bunch meant teamwork played a crucial part in his victory.

“Today was the kind of day that had to finish in a win,” Cavendish said afterwards. “My team did a great job as a unit, working hard in the early part of the stage, getting Michael [Barry] in the break, then doing a brilliant job to get me up there for the final sprint.”

“There were five of us in the front group early on, then four, then three in the last part, but everybody did a perfect job all day. The conditions were very tough, but that’s Qatar, it’s always windy here. There are two more stages to come and hopefully I’ll be able to do well in those ones, too. I’ve been unfortunate in the finishes earlier on in this race, now it seems my luck has turned.”

On Wednesday Cavendish out powered German Heinrich Haussler and Belgian race leader Tom Boonen in a long sprint in the northern fishing town of Madinat Al Shamal. After his victory, Cavendish is now lying ninth overall. In a dramatic day’s racing, cross-winds shattered the peloton on the long exposed ride from Doha’s Old Souq across the Qatar desert. But Cavendish and his Columbia-Highroad team-mates were never far from the front.

Wednesday’s win was even more satisfying for Cavendish because in the first two sprint stages bad luck had kept Cavendish out of contention. Tuesday’s stage was particularly frustrating for the British rider. A puncture less than 1500 metres from the line wrecked Cavendish’s chances when he was on the point of accelerating for the finish.

The Tour of Qatar ends on Friday, when Cavendish heads directly to the United States to join his team at a training camp leading up to the Amgen Tour of California.

Even today the race has been conditioned by forces more, in fact than the wind, which is now customary in this edition, the race had too many crashes that involved our runners, Da Dalto and Furlan fortunately without large physical effects.
Furlan had to ride off into the sand of the desert to avoid a fall in which was also involved sprinter Fisher, in a delicate stage of the race while fans were formed at the head of the group.

The sprinter lost the front and was absorbed by the second part of the peloton, where Bandiera and Lorenzetto, thatmanaged to catch the lead group later.  Shortly after; another split in the peloton  was missed after 5km and our only rider who managed to stay hooked to the head of the race was Lorenzetto, who finished in 10th place behind the winner Cavendish.
