Team Barloworld
A "Hors Category" Bianchi bike for Team Barloworld riders
Team Barloworld will ride Bianchi bikes for a second consecutive season in 2009 and work closely on bike development with the legendary Italian company to help it retain its position as one of the historic leaders in the bike industry.

The Team Barloworld riders will ride the Bianchi 928 Carbon SL this season, which is part of the Hors Category HoC range. It offers a perfect balance between light weight and performance and so is ideal for the demands of professional racing.

Bob Ippolito, Bianchi Chief Executive Officer, and Product Manager Lars Svalin are extremely proud of the 928 Carbon SL model. "We think the 928 Carbon SL is something special, it's light weight means it's ideal for long climbs but also strong enough for intense racing. That's why we think it's the perfect bike for a professional team like Team Barloworld and especially for a super climber like Mauricio Soler", Lars Svalin said.

Barloworld's weapon of choice the Bianchi 928 Carbon SL

Bob Ippolito added: "The 928 Carbon SL will allow Soler to fully utilise his power. I'm sure he'll do us all proud during 2009".

Team Manager Claudio Corti is very happy with the equipment selected for 2009. "Yet again the riders are going to have the best possible bikes. The Bianchi frames combine the lightness a climber like Soler needs for the mountains with the rigidity required by a sprinter like Robert Hunter . The excellent time trial bikes will also be vital for the individual and team time trials we're targeting during the season," Corti said.

The 928 Carbon SL is a carbon fibre monocoque frame made with unidirectional carbon fiber. It is extremely light, weighing just 900 grams for mid-range sized frame. It is extremely responsive without any compromise in performance. The quality of the frame has been improved thanks to the use of nano technology, with nano particles filling the spaces between the carbon fibres and so increasing the resistance and rigidity of the frame.
For more information on the Bianchi 928 Carbon SL and other models in the impressive Bianchi range, see the official Bianchi web site at: www.bianchi.it  & Bianchi USA

Barloworld's Chris Froome Interview
24  Young Gun Looking to improve this year

Chris, this is your second year with Team Barloworld. What are your hopes and goals for the 2009 season?

"I know it's still early days in my cycling career so I'm hoping to continue learning as much as possible from the older riders on the team and to gain as much experience as possible in the stage races on our program".

Barloworld's Chris Froome

Last year you showed that you can be competitive in the major stage-races like the Tour de France. What does that mean for the future?
"Personally I don't think I was very competitive in last year's Tour. I was happy to finish it and to gain the experience of riding a grand tour it but it would be good to aim for higher goals in the future".

How did you spend your winter ? Did you take advantage of the weather in South Africa?
"I have spent most of the winter in Johannesburg South Africa where I enjoyed training in the warm sunny climate. I also spent a week in Kenya over Christmas where I did some mountain biking. It was great to do something a bit different for a while".

Did you schedule special training on your time-trial bike?
"I haven't had a time trial bike with me in South Africa but I look forward to focusing a lot more on time trialing when I get back to Italy. I think it's definitely something I need to work on for the future".

In 2009 you will probably take ride the Giro d'Italia. How do you expect the Italian stage-race will be like?
"Like the Tour de France I see it as a very special event. People say it's tougher than the Tour with harder climbs and longer transfers between the stages but to me it's still a very unknown race so I'd hope to take away as much as possible in terms of experience if I do take part in it".

Last year, you changed nationality from Kenyan to British and you rode the World's in Varese with the British team. How did the change work out?
"British cycling is extremely well organized and has a lot in the way of development for the younger riders coming through the ranks. I'm very happy to be associated with the Brits and look forward to working with them to achieve specific pre-determined goals. It's a very exciting time with them now".

What is your dream for the future?
"Every rider dreams of winning races and I'm no different. Realistically it would be great if I could pick up a result or two in the smaller stage races and aim to be at least in contention in the bigger, more prestigious events. But aside from that it would give me a lot of satisfaction if I could set up a development program aimed at giving less fortunate youngsters the opportunity to pursue their dreams in the cycling world"

UCI ProTour
Eneco Tour to start a day earlier

Rhe UCI ProTour Council (UPTC) has approved a request by the organizers of the Eneco Tour to bring their event forward to 18-25 August 2009 (rather than 19-26 August).

The Council members considered that the amended dates offered certain advantages:
• the reduction of time between the Vattenfall Cyclassics in Hamburg on 16 August and the Eneco Tour will allow teams participating in both to economize on accommodation expenses;
• the extra day between the end of the Eneco Tour and the start of the Vuelta a España will give riders competing in both events more time to travel to Spain without compromising their condition.

Allan Davis first leader of the new UCI World Ranking
Australia’s Allan Davis of the Quick Step team is the first leader of the new UCI World Ranking after winning the Tour Down Under in Adelaide, Australia. The six-day UCI ProTour race kicked off the 2009 World Calendar season and also marked the comeback of Lance Armstrong.

Davis has ridden in all eleven editions of the Tour Down Under and used his fast sprint to win three stages this year and seal overall victory thanks to time bonuses scored during the race. He finished 25 seconds ahead of Australian rival and two-time former winner Stuart O’Grady (Saxo Bank) and 30 seconds ahead of Spain’s Jose Rojas (Caisse d’Epargne).

“I’ve finally done it, I can't believe it. I would like to thank my team, Quick Step; they have been wonderful and have done a great job all week," Davis said after pulling on the ochre colored race-winner’s jersey and popping the champagne in Adelaide. “This win is very important to the team, it is the first UCI ProTour race of the season and with three stages and the overall it has been an unbelievable race. I would like to thank my beautiful wife and children back in Spain, the organisation and the South Australian government for making this a great race.”

Davis scores 122 points
Davis scored a total of 122 points for his stage victories and overall success in Australia and makes history as the first leader of the new individual UCI World Ranking. O’Grady is second with 87 points and Rojas is third with 77 points.

The season-long ranking system includes all the one-day races and stage races on the UCI ProTour calendar and the so-called ‘historic’ races. It indicates the most consistently successful rider in men’s elite cycling.

Davis’ Quick Step squad leads the team ranking with 122 points. Saxo Bank is second with 87 points and the Caisse d’Epargne team is third with 78 points.  Thanks to Davis and O’Grady finishing first and second at the Tour Down Under, Australia leads the nations ranking with a total of 315 points. Spain is second with 78 points and Switzerland is third with 64 points.

The next race on the UCI World Calendar is Paris-Nice in France, between March 8-15.

Armstrong’s return helps give cycling a high-profile start to 2009
Lance Armstrong (Astana) finished out of the points in the Tour Down Under and so is not yet listed in the new UCI World Ranking. However the return of the seven-time Tour de France winner and cancer survivor has certainly given cycling an early season boost.  He went on the attack several times during the race and thanks to his come-back and his work promoting the fight against cancer, the Tour Down Under effectively competed with the Australian Open tennis tournament being held at the same time in Melbourne.

A record number of spectators watched the Tour Down Under from the side of the road (750,000 people, of which 144,000 lined Adelaide's roads on Sunday) and millions of others followed the action on television and the internet from around the world, giving cycling a high-profile start to the 2009 season.  In addition, 7'000 cyclists participated in a mass event organised on the course of Friday's stage. www.uciprotour.com

Pippo Pozzato Stays With Sidi Sport
Winning Partnership continues in 2009

The tried and tested bond between Sidi Sport and Filippo Pozzato will continue in the 2009 season. Sidi has always believed and trusted in the talents and abilities of the champion from Sandrigo (VI), who’s ready to make his season debut on the roads at the Tour of Qatar.

Pippo Pozzato - Katusha - Shes by Sidi

“I’ve been using Sidi Sport shoes since I was very young - says Pippo Pozzato -.Then when I hit the junior league I started a relationship with the company and they’ve followed me into the professional ranks. My relationship with the Signori family is very special, and goes beyond sports and work. Dino Signori has always treated me like a son, he’s always had faith in me, and there’s a lot of mutual respect between us. It’s no secret that I would feel honoured to be able to stay with Sidi for my entire career.”

Teams may change, but Pippo’s shoes will always be by Sidi Sport. First wearing the Team Mapei colours, and then in successive seasons wearing the Quick Step and Liquigas jerseys, Pozzato has delivered many victories and great satisfaction to the Sidi Sport brand, most notable of which was his extraordinary win in the 2006 Milano-San Remo classic.

“This year I’ve switched to Team Katusha - continues Pozzato -. There was a great feeling from the beginning between me and all my team mates. I want to get off to a strong start and do well, especially in the grand classics, the races I love best, in search of that edge that was missing in 2008, so I can deliver Sidi some new, prestigious victories.”

Pozzato will be virtually inseparable from his Ergo 2 Carbons, the top of the line shoes in carbon from the 2009 road collection signed Sidi Sport.

“For this season - says Pippo - Sidi custom made me a model in white faux patent leather with blue inserts that matches my new team uniform perfectly. The Ergo 2 Carbons are my favourites, comfortable and built to perform. The full carbon sole is extremely reactive during jump starts and in the propulsion phase. And the micrometric closing system allows for easy adjustment even during the most demanding part of a race.”

Revolution 24 Manchester Velodrome
Old Rivals Hoy and Tournant in Final Contest at Revolution

Arnaud Tournant will make his final competitive appearance at Revolution 24 on February 21st as the French Sprint legend retires from competition after over a decade at the top of the sport. Tournant has always been a crowd pleaser at Revolution and has been responsible for many of the events most memorable moments, including setting the Madison 1km Time Trial record with Chris Hoy in 2008.

Hoy is now the star of international sprinting but it was Tournant who blazed a trail at the start of his career dominating the Kilo between 1998 and 2001, setting the Kilo World record in the process. Hoy rose to dominance in the Kilo after 2001 but failed to topple Tournant’s world record missing out by 0.005 seconds in 2007. At the time Hoy acknowledged he could not go any faster, and had even more respect for Tournant and his talents.

Revolution 24 will now reunite these old rivals for one last time as GB and France go head to head once again. Tournant will be joined by the new generation of French sprint stars with Gregory Bauge, Francois Pervis and Michael D’Almeida lining up against Hoy and his Sky + HD team mates Jamie Staff, Jason Kenny and Ross Edgar.

The programme will feature a 200m Time Trial, Match Sprint Competition and Keirin. The finale to the evening will be a GB verses France Team Sprint which is likely to be a prelude to the final at the World Track Championships a month later. The rest of the sprint field will be made up of Craig MacLean, Matt Crampton, Dave Daniell, Christian Lyte, Pete Mitchell and Steven Hill.

ickets for Revolution 24 are sold out. Hospitality tickets are still available and more information is on www.cyclingrevolution.com. Highlights of Revolution 24 will be shown online after the event on www.channelm.co.uk  – check the Revolution website for full details.

Advocacy Bikes Belong News
Bikes Belong Foundation Awards
$40,000 in Grants Honoring Paul David Clark - Boulder, CO

The Bikes Belong Foundation is honored to award four grants through the Paul David Clark Fund. Awards of $10,000 will go to four exemplary organizations that are supporting their communities through bicycling, establishing innovative bike programs for young riders, and setting - and raising - the bicycle-advocacy bar.

Paul Clark was an avid cyclist and outdoorsman who was struck and killed by a vehicle while riding his bike in 2005. Many of his friends and colleagues - within and outside of the cycling world - contributed funds to our Foundation in Paul's memory. Bikes Belong is honored to invest in the future of bicycling by awarding grants for best practices in bicycle advocacy, safety, and youth programming in his name.

Community Cycling Center - Portland, OR
Community Cycling Center believes, first and foremost, that the bicycle is a tool for empowerment and a vehicle for change. The group brings this principle to everything it does, ranging from earn-a-bike programs for low-income youth and adults to bike safety classes and camps for anyone interested in building bike-related skills. Its volunteer bike-recycling program promotes sustainability while building a healthy community.

Community Cycling Center serves as a stellar model for established and aspiring bike-advocacy groups that are working to create and enhance community bike programs across the country. Additionally, the group's research and collaboration with the Portland-based Initiative for Bicycle and Pedestrian Innovation helps to establish best practices in bicycle commuting - particularly with regard to low-income and minority populations. Through all of its broad-reaching efforts and initiatives, Community Cycling Center makes bicycling accessible to Portlanders of all abilities, ages, and incomes.

Freiker - Boulder, CO/International
Freiker - which stands for Frequent Biker and rhymes with the latter - is an incentive program that promotes healthier, happier children, and a cleaner environment, by encouraging kids to ride their bikes and walk to school. The program began in 2004 at Crest View Elementary School in Boulder, Colorado. Participants are tracked by the Freikometer when they arrive at school, and each child receives points and awards for trips taken on foot or by bike. Schools report that their bike racks are full on even the chilliest days - nothing keeps Freikers from spinning and striding to school! The Boulder program has grown to include five elementary schools as well one in neighboring Longmont.

Freiker has helped children (and their accompanying parents!) log nearly 100,000 foot and bicycle trips to school - trips that would have otherwise been made by car. Those trips have covered more than 150,000 miles (which is six times around the world) and burned more than 3.5 million calories. Additionally, these children have saved the nation nearly 8,000 gallons of gas and prevented more than 150,000 tons of CO2 emissions by choosing active transportation. The Freiker program expanded this past fall to include schools in Eugene, Oregon; Madison, Wisconsin; Los Altos, California; and Ontario, Canada; and expects continued growth.

NorCal High School Mountain Bike League - California/National
NorCal High School Mountain Bike League has been promoting and developing youth mountain-bike teams at public high schools in northern California since 2001. Matt Fritzinger, director of the League since its inception, believes that "mountain biking is the T-Ball of our sport." Many NorCal athletes go on to succeed in collegiate cycling and professional road racing - and all of these riders will continue to enjoy cycling as a life-long sport.

High school mountain bike programs keep teens active and engaged, and help them to grow as part of a team while developing individual leadership skills. The programs the League has established in northern California are being replicated across the country, most notably in southern California, where more than 10 schools are launching the SoCal High School Mountain Bike League this spring.

Transportation Alternatives - New York, New York
New York City's Transportation Alternatives (TA) is one of the most influential bike-advocacy groups in the country. Through events, campaigns, and programs, TA works to reclaim New York City's streets for the best transportation alternatives: bicycling, walking, and public transit.

The group's influence - bolstered by 7,000 members and 20,000 activistshas won scores of miles of new bicycle lanes, including innovative traffic-protected facilities on Manhattan's 9th Avenue and Grand Street. TA has also gained more car-free hours in Central and Prospect Parks - two of the city's prime bicycle destinations. In 2009, TA is working to achieve a citywide "bikes in buildings" policy that will meet New York's growing demand for bike parking and encourage more bike commuting in the city. TA's role in affecting change in NYC, and inspiring bike-advocates nationwide, adds tremendous strength to the bicycling movement.
