Tour de San Luis (2.1) - Stage 7

The final stage in the Tour de San Luis is won by Saxo Bank's JJ Haedo. In the bunch sprint Haedo was the best over first stage winner Mattia Gavazzi. Luis Mansilla of Chile finished as third with Oscar Gatto and Murilo Fischer in fourth and fifth. Alfredo Lucero didn't get in trouble anymore and took the biggest win in his career by winning the final classification. Jorge Giacinti and Jose Serpa completed the podium. Andriy Grivko and Italian star Ivan Basso opened their 2009 campaign with the fourth and fifth place overall.

An early break of five riders animated the 167 km stage in and around San Luis. The break included Vincenzo Nibali, Murilo Fischer (Liquigas), Matti Breschel, Lasse Bochmann (Saxo Bank) and Eric Baumann (Nutrixxion) worked well together and stayed in front for most of the stage.

In the third lap the early move fell apart as Nibali tried it with a solo move. The peloton led by Team Argentina reeled in the others of the break and also Nibali was caught with forty kilometers to go.

The next one's to try were Carlos José Ochoa (Diquigiovanni), Jesús Rosendo (Andalucía Cajasur) and Noslen Funes (Team Mexico). Due to the presence of Ochoa (7th overall) the break didn't get much free space of the bunch and they were caught in the final kilometers.

The stage ended up in a sprint with JJ Haedo as the winner. For the Haedo family it was a successful week with both a stage win for Lucas Sebastian and Juan José. Lucas Sebastian also won the sprint classification.

Saxo Bank took the first victory of the season in the final stage of Tour de San Luis.
In the 167-kilometer stage with start and finish in San Luis Juan José Haedo added another brilliant victory to his already impressive track record.

"A perfect finale for us in every way. With three second places we had to do everything in our power to finish off this race with a victory for JJ. Matti and Lasse Bøchman were in a break for a long time but were caught by the peloton and then it was up to JJ to do what he does best. With three second places there's no doubt we've made our mark in almost every stage and with today's win we got what we came for thanks to a great moral from our riders and a fantastic effort by everyone," said a very satisfied Torsten Schmidt following the last stage of the South American race
