Tour de San Luis (2.1) - Stage 5

Spain's Xavier Tondo (Andalucia-Cajasur) has won the queens stage with the finish on top of the Merlo. The Spanish climber won with a slight gap on Jorge Giacinti, and José Serpa. Another Diquigiovanni duo Jackson Rodriguez and Carlos Ochoa rounded off the top five followed by Italian stars Ivan Basso and Vincenzo Nibali. Race leader Alfredo Lucero lost 27 seconds on Tondo and kept his leader's jersey.

The fifth stage took the riders from San Francisco Del Monte De Oro to Merlo over 204 km. During the stage the riders had to face three KOM sprints and two intermediate sprints. The finish of the stage was on top of the eight kilometer ascent up to Merlo.

Pablo Pintos (Uruguay) and teammates Antonio Cabrera and Patricio Almonacid (Chile) animated the race with an early move. The three worked well together and gained a maximum gap of ten minutes. At the ascent of the Merlo climb the break was reeled in by the bunch led by Team Argentina of race leader Lucero.

At the ascent of the climb the Diquigiovanni team took the initiative and started to pull in front of the bunch in order to launch one of their climbers. Due to the pace of the team the bunch was reduced to only eight riders with José Serpa, Carlos Ochoa, Jackson Rodriguez (all Diquigiovanni), Xavier Tondo (Andalucia), Jorge Giacinti (Argentina), Vincenzo Nibali, Ivan Basso (Liquigas) and Renato Seabra (Brazil). Race leader Lucero wasn't in the break but followed in a second group.

Carlos Ochoa was the first one to attack out of the break but he was quickly joined by Jorge Giacinti. Giacinti opened the attacks on the race leader but despite Lucero wasn't part of the break Giacinti couldn't create a big gap on his compatriot.

With two kilometers to go Ochoa and Giacinti were caught and eight man were back together to battle for the stage win. With 600 meters to go Nibali attacked and was countered by Serpa, Giacinti and Tondo.

With 200 meters to go Tondo made his move which was enough to win with a two seconds lead on Giacinti and 5 seconds on Serpa. Race leader Lucero finished as ninth 27 seconds down on the Spaniard of Andalucia-Cajasur.

The sixth stage will be a 121 km stage on the Potrero de los Funes circuit. It will probably be another stage for the sprinters.
