Tour de San Luis (2.1) - Stage 4

Colombian José Serpa surprised with an ultimate attack in the fourth stage of the Tour de San Luis to hold off the sprinting bunch for the win. The bunch was led home for second by Saxo Bank's Matti Breschel. Stage 1 winner Mattia Gavazzi, teammate of Serpa, finished as third. Alfredo Lucero remains in the overall lead.

The stage from San Luis to the top of La Carolina over 159 km contained three large circuits around the El Trapiche/La Florida. The 20 km circuits included several climbs before heading to the ascent to La Carolina.

Several breakaways animated the first part of the stage but due to the work of the national team of Argentina for race leader Lucero they were all reeled in before the first sprint. After the sprint won by Haedo it was up to Eric Baumann (Nutrixxion) to make his move. Baumann took the second sprint but was caught a few kilometers later.

The most significant break of the day came with about 90 km to go from Alessandro Vanotti (Liquigas), Andy Guptill (Colavita) and Nazaret Prado (Brazil). The trio was later joined by Lasse Bochmann (Saxo Bank), Martin Garrido (Palmeiras-Resort), Yordenis Crespo (Cuba), Xavier Tondo (Andalucia) and Luis Sepulveda (Chile).

On the final climb up to La Carolina it was Tondo who left his break companions behind in search for the win. Dirk Müller (Nutrixxion) and Jackson Rodriquez (Diquigiovanni) tried to bridge across to Tondo but never made it to the front.

In the front of the bunch it was the Argentinean team who set the pace and the whole break including Tondo was caught in the final kilometers. Just before the flame rouge, when the peloton was preparing a bunch sprint, it was José Serpa who jumped away to win with a slight margin on the first part of the peloton.

The fifth stage will take the riders from San Francisco del Mote de Oro to the top of Merlo (Mirador) over 204,8 km. The stage can be decisive for the overall victory on Sunday.
