World Cup Cyclocross - Nommay, Elite Women

The Americans did very well in the women's World Cup Cyclocross of Nommay. American Champion Katherine Compton won her second consecutive World Cup victory by beating World Champion Hanka Kupfernagel and her surprising compatriot Georgia Gould who made her European debut today. Kupfernagel remains in the overall lead of the World Cup.

From the start Katherine Compton and Hanka Kupfernagel took the lead and battled for the victory. In the penultimate lap the winner of Koksijde, Compton also got rid of the German World Champion to win her second race in a weeks time. Last week Compton prolonged her National title in Kansas City. Kupfernagel finished 17 seconds down in second while Georgia Gould completed the podium 24 seconds down.

Behind these three Helen Wyman, Daphny van den Brand, Maryline Salvetat and Marianne Vos battled for fourth place. Van den Brand finished in fourth followed by Wyman in for fifth. Vos, who made her World Cup season debut, finished at a disappointing seventh position 2.00 down on Compton.

The other Americans did very well also, as Rachel Lloyd was the third American in the top ten finishing eighth. Butler (22nd) and Vardaros (33rd) were the other Americans completing the race. The best Canadian was Natasha Elliott at rank 13. Wendy Simms finished as 15th.

The next World Cup race will take place in Zolder (Belgium) on Friday December 26.
