Caisse d'Epargne
Two New U-23 Riders Signed.
The team Caisse d'Epargne, which met on October 26, 27 and 28 in Gorraiz (Spain)
came to an agreement with the Under 23 rider from Cantabria Angel
Madrazo. Madrazo, who was the best Under 23 Spanish rider of the
season 2008, won amongst other races one stage of the Circuito Montañés.
The team directed by Eusebio Unzúe also signed the Portuguese rider Rui
Costa, 22 years, who rode this year for the Portuguese team.
The Team Barloworld cycling legend continues...
“A successful and popular sponsorship”
After a 2008 season that saw Team Barloworld participating in the most important
international events - the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France and most of the
famous one-day races - Barloworld , the South African multinational company,
today announced to the media their sponsorship of the team for 2009.
Chris Fisher, Head of Corporate Marketing
at Barloworld said: "The Team Barloworld sponsorship has been both successful
and popular. As a sponsorship it has set all sorts of records and won numerous
international awards. The ultimate objective has always been to make Barloworld
a recognized name in our target market and ensure all our business units and
employees have one Team they support. In the last two years alone Barloworld
achieved an estimated media impact of R2.5 billion, excluding international
television coverage. The sponsorship afforded Barloworld international partnership
opportunities as well as global branding partnerships on kit, cars and merchandise.
In excess of 500 customers and employees have been hosted at the Tour de France
alone. The sponsorship has united Barloworld employees and attracted remarkable
international interest and support."
Fisher added: "Barloworld has enjoyed incredible levels of support from
the public for the sponsorship. Our experience - continued Fisher - has been
that today's cycling fan supports a team that "touches their heart" or one that
is the underdog or "the little guy". Team Barloworld, due to their wildcard
status in the Tour de France, and their smaller budget than the big teams, has
acquired the label "The little team that knew they could" which has led to the
emotional support not only of South Africans but a legion of international
fans".
The riders won 22 races in ten different countries in 2008 - with
Enrico Gasparotto leader of the UCI Europe
Tour and Team Barloworld second in the team's rankings.
Barloworld has also been the Team that created a stepping stone for many
South Africans to take the step up from local stardom onto the international
stage. Team Barloworld will continue to offer Africa's top riders an opportunity
to compete internationally against the world's very best.
Team Barloworld management and riders remain largely unchanged for 2009 with
most of last years riders back. Robbie Hunter , Maurizio Soler , John Lee
Augustyn , Paolo Longo Borghini , Steve Cummings , Geraint Thomas , Christopher
Froome , and Daryl Impey to name a few.
Team Barloworld's official announcement of riders and the event roster for
the 2009 season will be announced within the next few days.

Skil-Shimano
Theo Eltink Signs
Theo Eltink has signed a one-year contract with the Skil-Shimano cycling team.
The 26-year-old Dutchman, who lives over the border in Belgium, has ridden for
Rabobank for no fewer than eleven years, first in the academy team, then the
last four years in the ProTour team.
Eltink made a splash in his first year as a pro back in 2005 by finishing
29th in the Giro d’Italia. A year later he confirmed his promise as a tour rider
by finishing 24th overall in the Vuelta a España.
Eltink has now finished six big tours – three in Italy and three in Spain. Last
year he was a domestique at Rabobank in those races, mainly for Denis Menchov
and Robert Gesink. At Skil-Shimano the climber is hoping to grab some of the
limelight himself in 2009. ‘Skil-Shimano has a good schedule, so I can develop
as a rider. My goal for next season is to win races and I want to focus on a few
attractive one-day races and stage races that involve climbs.’

Yukihiro Doi Extends Skil-Shimano Contract
Skil-Shimano has added an extra year to Yukihiro Doi’s contract. The 25-year-old
climber will be the team’s second Japanese rider in 2009 alongside Fumy Beppu.
Doi twice won the climber category in the Tour of Hokkaido (2006 and 2007),
finished second in the final classification of the Tour of Siam and eighth in
the Tour of Langkawi in 2007. This year, Doi was often at the front of the field
in the Deutschland Tour. The Japanese also rode a good Amstel Gold Race and
finished third in the sixth stage of the Tour of Japan.
To stimulate and develop cycling in Japan, in 2009 the Skil-Shimano cycling
team will be supplemented by the Shimano Racing Team as the satellite team for
young Japanese talent.
Skil-Shimano and Clement Lhotellerie part company
The Skil-Shimano cycling team and Clément Lhotellerie have terminated their
agreement which was originally valid until December 31 st 2009. Due to differing
opinions about their cooperation Clément Lhotellerie, his personal management
and the Skil-Shimano team have decided in mutual consultation that Lhotellerie
and the team will part company. The 22-year old French climber is consequently
free to continue his career in another team and Skil Shimano can finalise their
line-up for 2009.
Cyclocross Skills Book Now Available
Several years ago Scott Mares was frustrated with the only book on the market
and started to put together drills and skills for cyclocross. Scott has been
running the ACA cyclocross camps for 9 years with rider attendance from 60 up
to 140 at a time. The camps have help produce more than a dozen national champions
and even a Silver at the Jr. worlds championships.
The name of the book is “The Complete Book of Cyclocross, Skill Training and
Racing”. This book is available at
www.cx-book.com October 17th this year. The book will retail for $20.00. The
web site is full of information about the book and the author including a sample
chapter from the book.
About the book: The book addresses different techniques of skill training and
racing for cyclocross. The book will also address different cross drills to
promote skill and intervals specific to cyclocross. The book has over 200 detail
pictures with specific arrows showing where to place your hands. The book also
shows what NOT to do and why you should not do it.
Detailed descriptions will be given on these drills that have never been
published before. The book explains each drill in a way that is easy to
understand and implement. Racing tactics and equipment are a big section in this
book. In the racing section, I talk about different tactics and explain when and
when not to apply them.
In addition, the book contains a few chapters on growing the sport.
The ACA has been very successful on growing Junior Cyclocross through their
camps and Mud Skipper program. The book gives detailed guidance on how to create
and run your own cyclocross camp and junior cyclocross program.
While the topic is fresh, let's add the ACA Schedule for Cross Races in 2008:

Porky Gulch Classic Stage Race Rolls into

Pinkham Notch, NH— On Saturday and Sunday,

the Porky Gulch Classic Stage Race, a three-stage, two-day cycling race that
challenges cyclists in three distinct disciplines. The champion can claim the
title of Best All Around Cyclist in New England.
Made up of three different cycling events, the Porky Gulch Classic tests a
variety of cycling skills. The first stage of the Porky Gulch Classic is the
Toughest Two, a two-mile hillclimb up the Mt. Washington Auto Road, home of the
toughest hillclimbs in the world. In the afternoon, the competition shifts to
Story Land in Glen for the Story Land Criterium as cyclists race through the
famous amusement park. Sunday morning, the action heads back to Great Glen
Trails for the cyclocross portion, the Rockpile Rampage. Cyclocross is a fall
and early winter form of bike racing that combines elements of mountain biking,
road cycling and cross country running—with some steeplechase mixed in for good
measure.
Points are awarded based on finish order in each event. The cyclist with the
most combined points after the three events is declared the champion. The race
features categories for riders of all skill levels from experts to beginners,
and prizes are awarded in each category.

Cancellara Celebrates Honour with New Challenge
In the weekend Team CSC Saxo Bank's Swiss top rider Fabian Cancellara was honoured
as the best non-Belgian rider by Belgian magazines Het Nieuwsblad and Sporza,
and he will celebrate this by taking on a new challenge later this week on a
new "territory".
Cancellara will participate in a special Decathlon arranged by the Swiss Ice
Hockey Federation as they have their 100 anniversary.
The Team CSC Saxo Bank-rider will battle a bunch of fellow Swiss sports stars
in events decided by the ice hockey federation in the hockey arena, Hallenstadion
in Bern. There 12.000 seats in the arena.
New Goals for Fabian Cancellara
"Been there, done that" could almost be his slogan. Not
quite though but almost – throughout his entire career Team CSC Saxo Bank's
Swiss talent Fabian Cancellara has continued to set new goals for himself once
he's achieved the previous ones.
There's nothing unusual in setting new goals as such but for Cancellara it's
mainly about continuous challenges within the sport even though it could easily
be tempting to just go for a string of victories in Paris-Roubaix or something
similar.
"I sort of feel like if I've won a race I'll tick it off my mental list
and aim for something else. That doesn't mean I don't want to win the big races
more than once but I try to aim for new things all the time and my next big
goal is winning Ronde van Vlaanderen," says Cancellara and continues:
"I consider it entirely possible that I would be able to win the five
big one-day races during the course of my career and I feel that by loosing
a small amount of weight I could be ready to win in Flanders."
Cancellara has already won two out of five after his victory in Paris-Roubaix
in 2006 and Milano-Sanremo in 2008 but it takes something else entirely to win
Ronde van Vlaanderen, Liégé-Bastogne-Liégé and Giro
di Lombardia as well.
"If you look at how I won Tirreno-Adriatico this year and how I did on
the climbs in the three big races and especially my performance at the Olympics
with a very hilly route, I don't' think it's unrealistic that I might be able
to win them all at some point."
There have been a lot of speculations that Cancellara wants to win Tour de
France but that should not necessarily be taken as literally as portrayed in
the media sometimes.
"There's often media attention around me and the Tour because I said a
few years back that winning the Tour would be a dream come true for me. But
I also sometimes dream of owning a small island in the Pacific and taking it
easy – there's a world of difference from having dreams to setting yourself
realistic goals to aim for. That doesn't mean I won't try one day to win the
Tour, but that's not on my agenda right now. Now I'm gonna focus on Ronde van
Vlaanderen," determines Cancellara.
At the moment it's holiday time for Cancellara, who has been traveling with
his family before returning home this weekend to receive an award for the best
international rider from members of the Belgian press. Before long he'll start
training for next season starting with the annual team training camp with B.S.
Christiansen.

Michael Mørkøv to Team Saxo Bank - IT Factory
Another major Danish talent has signed with Team Saxo Bank - IT Factory.
23-year-old Michael Mørkøv has signed a two-year contract with
the team earlier today and will now be making the jump to the top level within
cycling.
Mørkøv is primarily known as one of the biggest talents on the
track and he has won silver at the Olympics with Alex Rasmussen, who has also
signed with Team Saxo Bank - IT Factory from next year. The two Danish track
riders have just won the Grenoble six-day race yesterday.
“After four good years with GLS I'm ready to live out my dream in the
shape of a contract with Team Saxo Bank - IT Factory. I'm very excited about
becoming a part of the ideals, which Bjarne Riis and the team stand for and
I'm positive that this will also improve our game on the track – which
hopefully will result in a gold medal at the Olympics. At the same time I think
I have a lot of potential on the roads and I look forward to learning a lot
together with Alex and the other new, young riders on the team,” says Mørkøv.
“Michael is the latest in a group of talented Danish riders, whom we've
had our eye on for a while. His qualities are obvious: he's got power and speed
from the track and at the same time he's an intelligent rider, whose technical
skills are among the best in his generation. I think that he – like Alex
Rasmussen – has great potential on the roads and I'm sure it will be extremely
exciting for all of us to work with him,” says Bjarne Riis.
High Road sports and Team Columbia confirms Monfort, Releases Gerdemann
High Road Sports, owner and operator of Team Columbia, today confirms that Maxime
Monfort (25) of Belgium will join Team Columbia for the 2009 season and announces
the release of Linus Gerdemann from his contract, effective October 31, 2008.
Gerdemann’s transfer to Team Milram has been approved by the UCI and is
subject to meeting final contract provisions.
"We wish Team Manager Gerry van Gerwen, his athletes and his sponsors
great success in their ambitious plans for 2009” says Team Manager Rolf
Aldag. "We are very excited about our roster for 2009, which features promising
young talent from 17 different countries. Maxime is a great addition to our
strong roster and we are pleased he has chosen to join Team Columbia.”
Aldag adds.
Inside the mind of a champion: Levi Leipheimer endorses
The Ultimate Cyclist
American great began using the cycling-specific sports psychology CD prior to
his 2007 breakthrough season
In preparation for the 2007 season, Levi Leipheimer added an important tool
to his training regimen: The Ultimate Cyclist. By strengthening his mental state
through the use of the only cycling-specific sports psychology CD in existence,
Leipheimer went from contender to champion, Grand Tour podium perennial and
Olympic medalist while becoming America’s most successful road cyclist
over the past two seasons. Leipheimer is now endorsing the product created by
cycling coach Josh Horowitz and performed by world renowned clinical hypnotherapist
Dr. Rick Collingwood.
“Since winning the 2007 Tour of California, The Ultimate Cyclist has become
an indispensable part of my training arsenal. It has dramatically improved my
focus and confidence. I recommend it to anyone looking to improve their mental
game,” said Leipheimer, who joins winners of 33 national championship titles
endorsing the CD including Chris Baldwin, Chad Hartley, Coryn Rivera and World
Track Champion Hayden Godfrey.
Since he began using The Ultimate Cyclist, Leipheimer has consistently produced
the best results of his career. His achievements include two Amgen Tour of California
stage race wins, a stage win and 3rd place overall at the Tour de France, a
USPRO Road Race Championship, a bronze medal time trial at the Beijing Olympic
Games, and two stage wins en route to a 2nd place general classification finish
at the Vuelta a Espana.
The Ultimate Cyclist CD plays approximately one-hour in duration and contains
both conscious and subconscious audio programming. It works on three levels.
First, guided visualization calms the body and mind. Patented theta rhythm technology
induces a deep state of relaxation. Finally, positive affirmations above and
below conscious hearing levels boost confidence and motivation as negative thoughts
are eliminated. The audio program addresses three keys to athletic success:
focus, confidence and relaxation. Users listen at night before and while falling
asleep. Results are noticed within a few weeks.
“While we can’t guarantee the kind of extraordinary results Levi has
produced through his hard work, discipline and natural ability, we’re proud
that The Ultimate Cyclist has played a part in helping him achieve his goals.
It’s an honor to team with this remarkable athlete in our mission to help
anyone who rides a bike - a world-class rider like Levi or a weekend warrior
recreational cyclist - get the most out of the time they invest cycling,”
stated Horowitz.
Founder of Liquid Fitness Coaching (www.liquidfitness.com) and an elite category
1 cyclist, Horowitz realized the importance of sports psychology after enduring
a string of bad crashes. He turned to a sports psychologist to help him recover
from the anxiety attacks he experienced after suffering a serious concussion
in a nasty wreck at the 2004 Redlands Cycling Classic. Immediately Horowitz
recognized the benefits of sports psychology methods, including hypnosis, visualization
and progressive relaxation. He wanted to share his discovery with his teammates
and clients, but was frustrated to find that cycling-specific hypnosis products
did not existed in the marketplace. Horowitz had read about Dr. Collingwood’s
documented success in using hypnosis to treat terminal cancer patients and sought
the Australian’s help with developing The Ultimate Cyclist. A partnership
was formed and additional titles were produced including The Ultimate Athlete,
Ultimate Fitness, Ultimate Sports Recovery and The Ultimate Triathlete. The
Ultimate Cyclist is exclusively available at www.UltimateSportsPsychology.com
for $34.95.

Mid-Atlantic Cyclocross News Briefs
MAC and MABRA host a joint weekend in Maryland to start November. The MAC Powered
by SRAM kicks things off on Saturday, November 1 with the Wayne Scott Xross
in Fair Hill. On Sunday, the BikeReg.com MABRAcross Series continues with the
Kelly Benefit Strategies Cyclocross at Rockburn, held at Rockburn Branch Park
in Elkridge Maryland. Saturday’s event at Fair Hill features the “heckle
hut”, an indoor portion of the track with barriers, a live DJ, southern-style
barbecue and beverages where those not racing may comfortably heckle those who
are. Sunday’s race is co-promoted by the Howard County Parks and Recreation
Department, the first governmental agency in the US to be actively involved
in the production of a cyclocross race.
· Wes Schempf sits atop the leaderboards of both the MAC Powered by SRAM
and BikeReg.com MABRAcross season point standings. Schempf’s C3-Sollay.com
teammate Laura Van Gilder leads the MAC standings after winning 3 of the first
four races.
· The MAC Powered by SRAM continues to be a leading proponent of gender
equality in cyclocross. Saturday’s Wayne Scott Xross will pay the Men’s
and Women’s winners equally. Meanwhile, the Whitmore’s Landscaping
Super Cross Cup scheduled for November 22 and 23 has become the latest UCI event
to announce that it is paying women according to the “Gould Formula”
proposed last year by Georgia Gould. The two-day event in The Hamptons of Long
Island New York will pay the top five women each day according to the UCI minimum
Men’s prize list. As both races are categorized as C1, the increase in
the purse is substantial and makes Whitmore’s one of the richest women’s
cyclocross weekends in the world.
· Following this weekend’s race in Maryland, The MAC Powered by
SRAM Series moves to New Jersey next weekend, November 8 and 9, with two long-time
fixtures of the Mid-Atlantic scene: Beacon Cyclocross and HPCX. The Beacon Cyclocross,
famous for its “Amphitheater of Pain” run-up, is testing the waters
this year by running as a domestically sanctioned race instead of UCI as it
has done in years past. Many promoters of U.S. UCI races, especially C2 races
in mid and late season, have been concerned by the possible negative impact
on entries resulting from new UCI rules. Under the new rules, riders may only
claim their top five C2 finishes and their top six C1 finishes. As the majority
of UCI races in the U.S. are C2, riders such as Jeremy Powers are scoring maximum
points from C2 races before the weather turns cold, possibly dampening the incentive
for top riders to participate in additional events. While the Beacon Cyclocross
experiments with domestic sanctioning, its central-Jersey counterpart, the HPCX
remains a C2 in its popular new home of Jamesburg.
