The cyclocross in Kalmthout, last year won by Czech Zdenek Stybar, went underway in sunny weather conditions. Due to the weather conditions the course was really fast.

In the first lap of the race World Champion Lars Boom leaded the field. Jonathan Page was taken down and lost positions in the bunch. Page went on but after a few laps he decided to leave the race. Halfway through the first lap Bart Wellens took over the command. Richard Groenendaal, Sven Nys, Kevin Pauwels and Thijs Al followed him while riders as Niels Albert, Klaas Vantornout and Zdenek Stybar were not in the first part of the bunch.

In the second lap Sven Nys attacked and only Thijs Al was able to follow. But Al lost contact on a technical part of the course. Nys build up a gap of a few second but a flat tire stopped his impressive effort. At the end of the lap a group of about fifteen riders was up front.

In the meantime Niels Albert found his rhythm, came to the front and launched his attack. In the next laps Albert was very impressive and he almost never looked back. The only one able to bridge up to Albert was Sven Nys himself after his tire problem was solved.

The others didn't came back anymore and the race ended up in a sprint with two. Belgian Champion Sven Nys was the fastest and defeated Albert with almost half a wheel length.

In the back the battle for the third position was exciting with riders as Kevin Pauwels, Radomir Simunek, Bart Aernouts, Zdenek Stybar, Klaas Vantornout, Bart Wellens and others. But finally it turned out in a sprint between Pauwels, Simunek and Aernouts. Pauwels was the fastest and completed the podium.

World Champion Lars Boom was battling for the third place as well until a mechanical dropped him back in the field. Boom finally finished as tenth.

Detail: Nys started the race with a black eye and a stitched eyebrow. Nys crashed in the cross of Lebbeke the day before. But the problem didn't affected his ride in Kalmthout today.
